Sidetracked
"Thank god you're here," Brooke said, pulling Ryan into her apartment and towards the bedroom.
"You know," Ryan began with a smile. "I really kinda liked that show until the cancelled it..."
"Not funny," Brooke said, whirling to glare at him, but winding up smiling and giving him a kiss. "So did I," she admitted before pulling him all the way into her bedroom, where it look like the closet had exploded.
"What the hell happened?" Ryan asked, looking around with wide eyes.
"I don't know what to take and what to leave," Brooke admitted. "I mean, I don't want to look like some cheap tramp, but a lot of my stuff is tight and low cut..."
"You could never look cheap or like a tramp," Ryan said, coming up behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist. "Just pack a week's worth of clothes, you can always wash 'em."
"But... do I need to bring like a nice dress? I mean, I looked Lake Morgan up online, and it's a pretty ritzy little resort place, complete with a nice restaurant in the lodge and a couple more nice places in town..."
"Bring a nice dress," Ryan said. "If nothing else, I'll take you out to dinner."
"I like the way you think," Brooke said. "What about... the webpage said that there were hot tubs at most cabins and more hot tubs around the lodge for guests, so... should I bring a bikini so we can go hot tubbing?"
"You want to go hot tubbing?" Ryan asked. "When regardless of whether our cabin has one or not, we'll have to do a mad, wet, sprint from the hot tub to shelter?"
"I'd just need my boyfriend to warm me up again," Brooke said with mock innocence.
"Have I told you yet how much I love when you play innocent?" Ryan said, kissing her.
"A few times," Brooke replied. "But I'm serious, if we're sharing a room, I better be getting some on this trip."
"Oh, believe me, you will," Ryan said, nodding seriously.
Brooke smiled again and pulled away to go back to trying to pack. "I just don't want them to hate me," she said. "I'm not some prim and proper Newport raised girl..."
"Thank God," Ryan said as he sat on her bed and leaned back to rest on his elbows. "Brooke, the two prim and proper Newport raised girls I dated completely ripped my heart out and did the cha cha on it. Gleefully. I'm ready for a girl who tells me when I'm being an idiot but loves me anyway."
"You better believe I love you anyway, you big idiot," Brooke teased as she went to her dresser and opened the top right hand drawer, spotting in the mirror that Ryan's eyesbrows had raised. "What?" she asked as she selected a few pieces of lingerie.
"Top right drawer, that's not the everyday stuff," Ryan said. "Does this mean I'm gonna be stuck the whole time wondering what you've got underneath your clothes?"
"No, you can know exactly what I'm wearing underneath," Brooke said, turning and holding a blue, and mostly see through, nightie up. "You like?"
"I like," Ryan replied, holding out his hand and pulling Brooke down on top of him as she laughed. "My family is going to love you," he said seriously.
"How do you know?"
"Because you make me smile," Ryan replied. "And there are times when that is one of the hardest things in the world. But you manage. So they are going to love you. Except Taylor and maybe Seth."
"I'll bitch slap them both if they get in my face or upset you," Brooke said, kissing him then shoving against his chest to get back to her feet. "Now stop distracting me while I try to pack!"
"But I think you need to work off some of that nervous energy first," Ryan said as he caught her hand and pulled her back against his chest. "Don't you?"
Brooke grinned, leaning forward to nip at his lower lip. "Maybe," she said.
"And you know how I think I should help you do that?"
"How?"
Ryan smiled and pulled Brooke closer again, kissing her. "Well, it involves a lot less clothes, and some of the stuff on this bed ending up on the floor..."
"You are not putting my nice clean clothes on the floor," Brooke said warningly. "How about I finish packing first, then we work off my excess energy? All night long? Since I'm guessing you have your bags in the jeep..."
"You know me way too well for 3 months," Ryan said. "But... how about we work off some energy in the living room, then come pack, then more energy... and then a little more in the morning?"
"I like the way you think," Brooke said. "But I'm packing first."
"Why?" Ryan said, keeping her tight against his chest.
"Because if I don't pack now, I'll be tossing stuff in my bag in the morning," Brooke replied. "We will get way too busy doing something else."
"If I let you pack now, can I see you in that nightie tonight?"
"You want me to wear clothes tonight?" Brooke asked.
"Naked eating could get distracting," Ryan said. "And I'm making you dinner."
"I think I love you," Brooke said. "More, I mean."
Ryan smiled and kissed her one more time. "Do we have a deal?"
"Deal," Brooke said, pushing herself up so she was straddling him and holding out her hand.
Ryan shook her hand then pulled her into one more kiss. "Okay, packing, right?" he said as he released her.
"Right," Brooke agreed, getting up.
There was quiet for a few minutes, until Brooke turned to Ryan, holding up first a black dress and then a pink one. "Black," he said, nodding.
Brooke carefully hung that dress on her closet door before going back to packing jeans and sweaters into her bag, along with some lingerie that made Ryan grin, and a small bag with some of her jewelry in it. Finally, on top of everything else, she tucked a sketchbook and a box of pencils and markers. "Just in case I have a brilliant design idea," she said.
"I'm sure you will," Ryan said, nodding. "Are you done? Can we get busy doing something else now?"
Brooke grinned and dropped her bag on the floor to go back to straddling him. "Uh-huh," she said. "And then you make me a nice yummy dinner."
"Of course," Ryan agreed, nodding.
"And then more sex..." Brooke said.
"Very good plan," Ryan said.
"Then we sleep, then some nice shower sex before we get dressed and go to your parents' house."
"Shower sex is good," Ryan agreed, nodding again as he tugged at her shirt. "But so is sex before dinner," he added, nodding seriously.
Brooke grinned and leaned down to kiss him before sitting up again and yanking her shirt up over her head. "Don't say I never gave you anything," she teased as she moved against the bulge in his jeans.
Ryan grinned and grabbed her by the waist, enjoying her squeal as he rolled them over so she was on her back and he was leaning over her. "You are an evil, evil girl," he replied, bending to kiss her and suck her lower lip between his teeth.
"You know you like it," Brooke replied as she yanked at his belt and slipped her hands inside his boxers to wrap around him.
"Almost as much as I love you," Ryan replied softly in her ear.
Brooke smiled and turned her head to kiss him softly. "I love you, too," she whispered. "Now I want sex," she added.
Ryan laughed. "Yes, ma'am," he agreed with a smile as he reached to unbotton her jeans and yank them down her slim hips, trying to focus on what he was doing and not on her hand stroking him. He had to move away from her to get her pants all the way off, and then to strip the rest of the way out of his, then he kneeled between her legs as she pushed herself up on her elbows to watch him. He placed soft kisses, starting near her knee and running up her leg until he veered off to kiss her stomach then dipped down between her legs, flicking his tongue out and enjoying the way she moaned and buried her fingers in his hair.
"Fuck," Brooke groaned, arching her back.
Ryan grinned and pulled away to move up her body and capture her mouth with his. "Do you know how perfect you are?" he whispered.
"Damn straight I am," Brooke replied, somehow managing to sound both confident and gentle at once. "And you and me are absolutely, totally, and completely perfect together," she added, cupping his face with one hand.
Ryan smiled and kissed her again as he shifted to slid inside her, loving the way she arched her back again to get him in just a little deeper.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Ryan was wearing just his boxers as he looked through Brooke's fridge and cabinets to try to find something to cook, when she came out of the bedroom in her little blue nightie carrying his cellphone. "It's vibrating," she said.
Ryan plucked it from her hand, leaning in for a kiss before glancing at the display and frowning. "Sandy?" he asked as he answered. "What's up?"
"I think you need to get over here now," Sandy said. "Julie left Frank, and apparently he didn't take it well, because Kaitlin's wrist is broken..."
"What?!" Ryan demanded. "He hurt her?!"
"Apparently, Julie kicked Frank out, and he started yelling at her. When he raised a hand to hit her, Kaitlin hit him with a chair, and that's when he went after her and broke her wrist. Julie knocked him over the head and they got out of there. It happened last night, but they didn't want to call and worry us, so Julie asked Bullit to loan them his plane to get here this afternoon," Sandy explained. "
"So they're at the house now?"
"Yeah, and except for Kaitlin's wrist and Julie being upset, they're both fine, insisting that they need this trip and Bullit's going to join us all up there next week..." Sandy said. "But I heard Julie telling Kirsten that Kaitlin said she wanted you because she knew you'd protect them. Just in case Frank shows up in town before morning."
"Brooke and I will be there in 20 minutes at the most," Ryan said, looking over at his girlfriend and seeing the confused and worried look on her face.
"Can't wait to meet her, kid," Sandy said with a weary sigh. "See you soon, and drive careful."
"I will," Ryan promised before hanging up. He almost threw his phone across the room then stopped and grabbed a pan that was sitting on the stove and threw it instead. "That god damn son of a bitch!" he yelled.
"Ryan?" Brooke asked, her voice stunned and quiet.
"Frank broke Kaitlin's wrist," Ryan said, turning to face her. "She stopped him from hitting her pregnant mom, and the son of a bitch broke her arm. And now she's scared and she wants to see me because she knows I won't let him hurt either of them..."
"Okay," Brooke said, nodding. "Maybe we should just forget about me..." she began.
"No way am I leaving you alone," Ryan interrupted. "You don't know him when he goes into a rage. He might show up in Berkeley, and if he does, he'll probably go to my dorm to try and talk to me. And Aiden knows your address, so he might be 'helpful' and tell Frank. No, you're coming with me, we're just going over their tonight to spend the night before leaving in the morning," he said. He paused and reached out to her, relieved when she took his hand and moved to embrace him. "I'm sorry if I scared you," he whispered.
"It's okay, baby," Brooke replied, stroking his hair. "I think I would reacted the same if it was someone I loved." She paused to kiss his cheek. "Let's go get dressed, then we can go," she said.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
When Ryan pulled into the driveway behind the Cohen's range rover and the second rover that they had rented for the trip, he shut off the engine and sat there for a moment, taking a couple deep and even breaths. "Okay," he finally said. "Let's go."
Brooke silently got out, grabbing her smaller overnight bag that she'd hurriedly packed to get through the night, and then took his hand as they crossed the yard and walked up the steps. When they entered the quiet house, they immediately spotted Kaitlin and Julie on the couch, both clearly distressed, and Brooke squeezed Ryan's hand then released it. "Go," she said. "They need you."
Ryan offered her a sad smile, then quickly moved further into the living room and around to crouch down in front of Kaitlin, who almost threw herself into his arms, crying. As he wrapped one arm around Kaitlin's shaking body, he stretched his other out to squeeze Julie's hand. "Hey," he whispered.
"I'm not going back to him or giving him another chance," Julie said. "I asked Bullit to help me with getting full custody, and he said that by the time he meets us next week I'll officially be an employee of his, so Frank can't argue that I have no income, and... and I'm going to make this work."
"You know I'm here whenever you need me," Ryan said to them both, ducking his head to catch Kaitlin's gaze. "Always, Kaitlin."
"I thought he was gonna hurt mom," Kaitlin said.
"He probably would have," Ryan said. "You shouldn't have put yourself at risk, but... that was very brave of you, and I'm proud of you for trying to protect her. But if ever something like that happens again, you protect her by calling the police, okay? Don't you ever put yourself in danger like that again."
"We were actually talking on the plane," Julie said. "We'd both sort of like to move up here. I'm completely lost without Kiki, and..."
"I would love to be able to see you guys more," Ryan assured her with a sad smile.

Date: 2007-06-14 02:03 am (UTC)After having watched Kevin Sorbo as Frank Atwood on the show, I can't really see him this out of control like you wrote him in this piece. Then again, his instincts, reactions and thoughts won't likely change fundamentally just because he was in jail.

Well...hell of a way to meet Ryan's family, huh? I was thinking that this will be the first time Brooke has ever seen an "angry" Ryan too. That's always an eye opener.
My favorite part of this was when they got to the house and Ryan 'sjut down' for a second, took a deep breath, and then got out of the jeep.
That was very in character and says so much about what is going on in this head, without saying anything at all.

Date: 2007-12-28 06:36 pm (UTC)It was kind of shocking for Brooke, but she also recognized that he had a valid reason to be upset, that he threw an inanimate object to release the anger, and he apologized afterwards... it's not like he did this over something stupid like a bad grade or something...
I saw it as Ryan wanting to make sure he didn't seem even remotely angry when he saw Julie and Kaitlin. He didn't want them to think for even a moment that he was angry at them, he needed to be calm and comforting for them.
