It was kind of shocking for Brooke, but she also recognized that he had a valid reason to be upset, that he threw an inanimate object to release the anger, and he apologized afterwards... it's not like he did this over something stupid like a bad grade or something...
I saw it as Ryan wanting to make sure he didn't seem even remotely angry when he saw Julie and Kaitlin. He didn't want them to think for even a moment that he was angry at them, he needed to be calm and comforting for them.
