"Summer said you were having a meltdown and needed me to get over here," Marissa said as she walked into the poolhouse.
"Summer blew things out of proportion," Ryan replied. "I'm just stressed and needed... a little reassurance from her that it was gonna be okay."
"It's better that she over react at all times, then under react the one time you really do need someone to be here with you," Marissa said. "I think she still blames herself for my overdose last summer. She knew I was upset but didn't keep her eyes on me constantly. It's not her fault at all, but..."
"Right about now? I kinda wish I was in Chino and could get my buddies Arturo and Eddie to take me out to get drunk," Ryan admitted.
"Well, there's no drinking on the schedule, because the official excuse is that I need help with my math homework so I don't flunk the 10th grade, and I'm babysitting my sister so I need you to come over to my house," Marissa said. "Which effectively gets you away from the drama here."
"I like that plan," Ryan agreed, grabbing his books so it would look real. "Do you really need help?"
"A little, but not too much," Marissa said as they headed into the house. "Thanks for letting me borrow Ryan, Mr. and Mrs. Cohen," she said with a smile.
"I'll be back later," Ryan said, ignoring both Seth and Sophie.
"Maybe we can continue our conversation then," Sophie said.
"No," Ryan replied coldly before following Marissa out the front door and around to her house.
"So, you really don't like Seth's grandmother, huh?" Marissa asked as they headed inside the Cooper house.
"She's okay, I guess, but I don't like being pushed to tell people things, and she pushed a lot."
"Okay, I'm making a mental note not to push you on anything," Marissa said.
"Who's he?" Kaitlin asked from the stairs. "I don't think you're suppose to have boys over."
"Ryan is Summer's boyfriend, and he's here to help me with my math and maybe keep me from hurting you," Marissa replied.
"It's nice to meet you, Kaitlin," Ryan said, holding out his hand as the girl came down stairs.
Kaitlin eyed him for a minute, then shook his head. "Your the kid staying with the Cohens, aren't you?"
"Yeah, I am," Ryan said. "What do you think of your mom marrying Kirsten's dad?"
"He's old and a jerk," Kaitlin said.
"That's not nice, Kaitlin," Marissa admonished.
"No matter how true," Ryan muttered, making Kaitlin laugh.
"I like you," she said.
"Thanks, I like you, too," Ryan said with a smile.
"When you're done helping Marissa with her math could you help me with mine? Mom sucks at it and so does Marissa."
"Sure," Ryan agreed. "I'd love to."
~~~
"You got it," Ryan said almost two hours later as he looked over Kaitlin's shoulder. He and Marissa had finished quickly, and taken a break before he'd turned to helping Kaitlin. She was a little on the annoying side at times, demanding Ryan's full attention, but she was a smart girl and Marissa had whispered to him that she thought Kaitlin had a crush.
"I rock!" Kaitlin said. "And so do you," she added as an after thought.
"Thanks," Ryan replied with a smile.
"Marissa? Kaitlin?" came a man's voice from the front hall.
"Dad?" Marissa called out, jumping up and hurrying towards the front of the house, followed by Kaitlin.
Ryan gathered his books together, deciding he could handle dealing with Seth and Sophie now, and headed for the door. "I'm gonna go, now that all math work is finished," he said as he walked into the hall, not looking up.
"Daddy, that's Ryan, he's a friend of Marissa's and he helped me with my math homeowrk after he helped her with hers," Kaitlin said.
"It's nice to meet you, I'm Jimmy Cooper."
Ryan finally looked up, freezing and going pale as he saw Jimmy's face.
"You are the perfect distraction from my bitch of an ex-wife."
Ryan swallowed painfully as he realized that Jimmy recognized him, too. "I've gotta go," Ryan said, hurrying out the door. As he rounded the bottom of the wall seperating the yards, he stopped to lean against the wall, gasping for air before dropping the books and throwing up in the bushes.
"What's wrong?" came Sophie's concerned voice, and he could almost feel her reaching out then stopping herself. "What happened?"
"Just leave me alone," Ryan pleaded, the words coming out with a half sob.
"You really think that's gonna work?" Sophie asked gently as she closed the remaining distance and put a gentle hand on his back. "Are you sick? Did something happen?"
"Besides me running into a former john?" Ryan spit out. "Who happens to be the father of one of my friends?"
"Next door?" Sophie asked, her expression hardening. "You need to tell..."
"No," Ryan said. "No. Marissa doesn't need to find out that her dad picks up teenage male prostitutes in Chino. It would kill her, I can't do that to her. And he doesn't live next door, not anymore. Once Marissa's mom marries Caleb, there won't be any excuse for her dad to be next door, and everything will be fine."
"You do that a lot, don't you? Put your self after everyone else?"
"She's my friend, I refuse to hurt her by letting her know what her father's like," Ryan said, grabbing the books he'd dropped. "Just drop it, Mrs. Cohen."
~~~
Very early the next morning, Sophie got up to sneak outside and have a cigarette before anyone else got up, and she found Ryan sitting with his feet in the pool, smoking his own cigarette. "Got a light?" Sophie asked.
Ryan jumped slightly and turned to look at her, hesitating before holding out his lighter. "You smoke?"
"I won't tell if you don't," Sophie said, lighting hers then handing the lighter back. "I didn't intend to upset you earlier," she added after a few minutes. "I'm a nosy old woman who wants to know all about the kid that her son's been raving about."
"And now you do," Ryan said. "I've never... my brother Trey is only person I ever told about that group home. I know he told our buddy Arturo, because when I told 'Turo that I had new foster parents, he got this look on his face. But... Sandy and Kirsten don't know. Seth doesn't know any of it. He just thinks I was homeless and got beat up, and his parents decided to help me."
"What really happened?" Sophie asked.
"A john didn't wanna wear a condom, and after he beat me until I couldn't move, he got what he wanted."
"Was it...?" Sophie asked, gesturing next door.
"No," Ryan said. "He was... he was one of the 'nicer' ones. If you can call a guy who sleeps with 15 year-old male hookers nice."
"Doesn't make it any less scary to see him when you've been building a new life."
"Exactly," Ryan said.
"If I let you in on a secret of mine, will you consider giving me another chance?" Sophie asked.
"Depends on the secret," Ryan said, though he got out of the pool and moved to sit in the other chair at the table Sophie was sitting at.
"I shouldn't be smoking because I'm sick," Sophie said. "Lung cancer. Probably from years of smoking."
"Does Sandy know?" Ryan asked.
"No, he doesn't," Sophie said. "I don't know how to tell him or Seth about it."
"Just say it," Ryan said. "They need to know."
"What good will it do for them to know something so painful?"
"So they can help you through it!" Ryan said, then he closed his eyes and tapped his cigarette against the edge of the ashtray, realizing what she was doing. "You're not just telling me this to get me to tell them about..." he asked, gesturing next door.
"Partially, yeah," Sophie admitted. "But it's also true. I've got cancer and I don't want to hurt them by telling them."
"And if you don't tell them, and you suddenly take a turn for the much worse, they've lost their chance to say goodbye," Ryan said.
"You're a pretty smart kid," Sophie said.
"And you're a pretty sneaky old lady," Ryan countered.
"Thank you," Sophie said. "Now, you tell me what that idiot Caleb's been doing?"
Ryan chuckled. "I've got... I've got this horrible feeling that he has something to do with my mother suddenly deciding to go into rehab. When she called me a couple days ago, she mentioned something about being glad that 'he' gave her a second chance with me. She tried to say she found God, but... my mom always said god was for idiots. I don't know how, but I think Caleb got to my mom. The fact that she's in some fancy rehab clinic instead of a cheap court ordered one is another big clue."
"Why would he, do you think?"
"He thinks I'm trash," Ryan said. "He wants me away from Kirsten and Seth."
"He is that kinda manipulative asshole," Sophie agreed. "You need to tell Sandy about these suspiscions of yours."
"I can't," Ryan said. "He's gonna be dealing with enough when you tell him about the cancer."
"I'm not telling him unless you tell him about either your suspicions or about that man," Sophie said.
"Are you sure you're not the lawyer?" Ryan asked, leaning forward. "Because you sure as hell sound like one what with the negotiating."
"I'm just a stubborn old woman who's used to dealing with a lot of stubborn people," Sophie replied with a smile. Then, she reached out to lightly cup Ryan's cheek. "Do you have any idea how much Sandy and Kirsten love you, kid? You're important to them, and they'd want to know about this."
Ryan sighed and nodded as he spotted Sandy in the kitchen, dressed for early morning surfing. "I'll tell him about Caleb, if you'll tell him about the cancer," he offered.
"Deal," Sophie agreed.

Date: 2007-04-14 09:24 am (UTC)Hehe, I actually expected it the minute he turned up in that house unexpected. Well, at least you didn't turn him into a total asshole (it's bad enough as it is) by making him one the really mean violent Johns.
I'm curious how this will go on. Cause I'm sure it's not the last time he saw Jimmy.
I like Marissa's helping him out idea. Getting him out of the house and instead of turning to booze or drugs or trouble, he gets distracted by something he is really good at and with that even gets a good feeling through helping the girls out with his smarts. And I like the Kaitlyn exchange.
Sophie is just great. I love every single line of the Ryan/Sophie encounter.
One nitpick though. But... Sandy and Kirsten don't know.
Correct me, if I'm wrong...but doesn't Sandy have at least an idea about the old group home? Wasn't that what he used to blackmail the asshole socialworker into letting Ryan stay with them? Or do I have that confused with another story.
Hm, maybe I should reread the beginning of the chapter again to be sure.
Thanks for updating, sweetie.

Date: 2007-04-20 08:25 pm (UTC)As for Jimmy?It's nice to find out that his being a two-faced thief,had more to do with him being a pedophillic scumbag;then Julie blowing money on Kaitlin's pony, her wardrobe and "Glass shower curtain rings from Morrocco."Now make the bastard pay.

Date: 2007-04-20 10:22 pm (UTC)Yeah, this version of Marissa probably could handle it, but Ryan's still got his hero complex and he doesn't want to hurt her...
Scumbag is definitely a good descriptor for Jimmy... lol...
