"I still can't believe you called me into work on a Saturday," Kirsten told her father as they walked out of their meeting.
"Did you have plans?" Caleb asked, following his daughter towards her office.
"I wanted to be home when Sandy and Ryan got back from visiting Ryan's brother."
"If he has a brother, why isn't he living with him," Caleb griped.
"Trey's in jail, dad," Kirsten said. "And after what happened yesterday, with Ryan's mother showing up..."
"Really, his mother?" Caleb asked, the gears turning.
"She wants him back," Kirsten said, not looking up as they entered her office and she went to her desk. "The woman shows up smelling like she's been on a bender, and expects him to just agree to go home with her or something. He asked her to leave and not come back until she could prove she was willing to try to be a good mom."
"Maybe she just needs a little help," Caleb said slowly.
"The woman's not fit to be a mother," Kirstened muttered.
"I should let you go," Caleb said. "I have other business to attend to."
Kirsten looked up, smiling slightly. "I'll see you monday, Dad," she said as she grabbed her purse and a few folders. She walked over and gave him a hug. "Love you."
"I love you, too, Kiki," Caleb replied. He watched her go, a slow smile coming across his face as an idea formed.

"So you got the girl, huh?" Trey asked.
"Yeah," Ryan replied, smiling. "All it took was getting drunk and almost getting into a fight with a guy to defend her honor."
"True and tested method," Trey replied. "But you don't get drunk unless you're seriously depressed. I know you're still kinda messed up over... everything, but what the hell?"
"Ma showed up," Ryan admitted. "She smelled like booze and smoke."
"Fuck," Trey muttered.
"She said she wanted me back, and... and I told her that I couldn't trust her until she gave me a reason to believe that I was more important than the booze and drugs. I asked her to leave, and she did."
"After making you feel like shit for not just agreeing to go home with her," Trey guessed. "Fucking bitch."
"Point is, she left, and I was freaked out and decided to go to the party," Ryan said. "And it worked out because me and Summer talked, and now I have a girlfriend."
"That's the spirit, be positive," Trey said, his tone more than a little sarcastic.
"Like you?" Ryan replied, raising an eyebrow.
Trey grinned. "You're scary when you decide to act like me," he said.
"Sandy told me he's trying to work out a deal for you, get you out early," Ryan said.
"Yeah, the guy came to see me like a week after the last time you visited," Trey said. "Told me that he thought you needed me to be out of here and okay, so he was gonna do what he could to make that happen."
"He's a good guy."
"They're still taking good care of you?"
"Yeah, Trey, they are," Ryan said.
"Good."
"Are things... okay... in here?" Ryan asked hesitantly.
"I'm doing fine," Trey said. "Don't worry about me."
"If I told you not to worry about me, would it do any good?" Ryan countered.
"No, but I'm the big brother, I'm suppose to worry about my little brother," Trey replied. "I let you down by getting busted and not getting you out of Chino like I promised."
"It's okay, you tried," Ryan said. "Besides, I'm out now. And I'm happy and... I'm doing really good."
"Good," Trey said. The guard gestured that time was up, and both of the brothers stood. "Take care of yourself, LB," Trey said, giving Ryan a quick hug. "I'm staying out of trouble, so hopefully I'll see you without time limits pretty soon."
"Okay," Ryan said, nodding. "See you soon, Trey." With one final small wave, he headed back into the building and followed a guard to the waiting area, where Sandy was flipping through an almost ancient copy of 'People'. "Ready to go? Or do you wanna finish you're magazine?" Ryan joked.
"Kirsten has this one in her collection," Sandy replied with a smile, dropping the magazine on the table as he stood. "How was the visit?" he asked as they signed out.
"Okay," Ryan said. "I told him about Ma, and about me and Summer getting together."
"What did he say about your mother?"
"I won't repeat the words he used, but basically he's pissed at her for showing up drunk," Ryan said. "But he wasn't surprised."
~~~
It hadn't taken long for Caleb to make the neccesary calls and offer the neccesary money to arrange everything and put his plan in motion, so it was only a few hours after talking to Kirsten that he walked into the greasy diner in LA. He grimaced, but carefully hid it as he approached the counter. "I'm looking for a Dawn Atwood," he said.
"That's me," the bleached blonde with bloodshot eyes said.
Caleb smiled. "My name's Caleb Nichols, and I'm here to help you get your son back."
Dawn's eyes lit up. "You are?"
"You need to make an effort, though. Get clean and sober for him," Caleb said, trying his best to come across as caring.
"I'll do anything to get Ry back," Dawn said.
"I made arrangements for you to enter a program to help," Caleb said. "It's a live-in facility, food and shelter provided. And I'll make sure your things are safely in storage until you're well."
"How can I thank you?" Dawn asked.
"Just be the kind of mother your son wants," Caleb said with another smile. 'And get him away from my family,' he added to himself.
To Be Continued...
Caleb's an asshole... but to be clear, he knows next to nothing about Ryan's background, just that Ryan's from a poor family and now he's 'taking advantage' of Kirsten... he doesn't know about Dawn letting Ryan get hit, or that Dawn kicked Ryan out and left him homeless, or what happened to Ryan after that.
Date: 2007-02-15 04:47 am (UTC)Kirsten, for all of her concern for Ryan and any business and professional smarts she exhibits, typically disappoints by blurring the lines at work with the personal and becoming an unintentional pawn to her father. The problem is, she is too weak a person with him in all matters. And, bottom line, Ryan's business wasn't hers to discuss with Caleb regardless of their daughter/father relationship. That was private and had nothing to do with Caleb. That ought to feed nicely into Ryan's trust issues yet again. Stupid Kirsten ought to know better when it comes to respecting someone's life, not to raise questions about Ryan or to reveal anything more than necessary.
Btw, the Cohens are legally Ryan's guardians in this version, right? Having that arrangement altered after Dawn was found guilty of abandonment wouldn't be very easy if even possible, no matter if she cleaned up her act for an established 6-12 months for a judge to review. I guess even planting the seeds is cause for trauma and conflict...
Date: 2007-02-15 05:24 am (UTC)And now I'll let the legalese be put to rest, but it's an occupational hazard.
Caleb certainly could and would bribe. It would help him use Dawn to accomplish his desired task, but he'd eventually find resistance within state channels from "Sandy" types who are moral and dedicated or from attorneys or judges who would love to turn the tables on him too.
The Kirsten/Caleb conflict ought to be interesting and I do wonder if this would change Ryan's relationship with Sandy for the better- and Kirsten for the worst. He's a private person and we know how he has the read on Caleb. He should be very hurt at the least and feel violated and betrayed at the worst for being put at risk needlessly and carelessly, even if not intentionally.
Date: 2007-02-15 05:51 am (UTC)Painful lessons all around, but deservedly so for Caleb and ones of reckoning for Kirsten. Poor Ryan just gets hurt again- and reminded of so many previous, similar affronts. He's such a victim purely by accident of birth. But this is the stuff of rich, engaging drama!
Date: 2007-02-15 06:58 am (UTC)He should have informed himself a lot better about the real circumstances.
Guess, over time he will find out and maybe that will help him realize what a mistake he makes.
As usual, Kirsten trusts her dad way too much. She hasn't yet realized that telling her dad about her family business will not bring her an open ear, but Caleb trying to use it against the guys in her life.
Date: 2007-02-15 07:19 am (UTC)Well, think about it, at this point the only encounter between Ryan and Caleb that she knows about is at the Valentine's party. While it wasn't exactly friendly, it was far from hostile... she has no reason to see Caleb as a villian at this point... but that will change...
Date: 2007-02-15 04:12 pm (UTC)I really like your Trey, the way he's so concerned for Ryan. I hope Sandy gets him out soon so that we can have some more interaction, not the Trey Marissa kind from S2.
As for Dawn she is so broken from all her failed relationships and the years of abuse she will probably fall right into Caleb's lap with all the "help" he's going to give her.
