Chapter Twenty Four

Once Ryan was feeling a decent buzz, he backed off on his guzzling of the expensive beer. He didn't want to get completely trashed, didn't want to get to where both of his biological parents and most of his mom's boyfriends always got to. He wanted to get just drunk enough that he could let the bad feelings sink away and focus on something else, like the loud music that made deep conversation impossible, music that pounded in his ears and helped with the overall numbing effect he was going for. He found his way out onto the rear deck with it's view of the ocean, and went to lean against the railing, staring out at the remains of the day as the sun sunk below the horizon.

"Hey, man!" a guy said as he leaned back against the railing beside Ryan.

Ryan frowned, recognizing the guy as one of the ones who often insulted Taylor and occasionally talked to Luke. Chip or something, the guy Summer had told him was responsible for everyone knowing about Luke's dad. "What do you want?" Ryan asked.

"Nothing, just saw you standing here alone, wondered if you want me to hook you up with one of the chicks," Chip replied. "Holly'd probably..."

"Holly's a fucking slut," Ryan replied, looking back out towards the ocean. "I'm nowhere near that desperate to get laid.

Chip laughed, an annoying almost braying sound. "Too true, man!" he said. "Besides, you've probably already had the best piece of ass at Harbor. Everyone knows you were tight with Summer for a while."

"Fuck off," Ryan muttered, not wanting to hear the asshole say Summer's name.

"What's she like in bed? I'll bet she's fucking..."

"I said fuck off," Ryan replied. "Stop saying that shit about her."

"Everyone knows she's the biggest whore at Harbor," Chip insisted. "That or cocktease, she alternates..."

"Did you not hear me say fuck off?!" Ryan said, jaw clenched and eyes flashing with anger as he turned to face Chip.

Summer had seen them walk into the party, and locked eyes with Ryan for a moment before turning away quickly and making sure she disappeared into the crowd. She managed to avoid him most of the night, but as it got late, she went outside and found Ryan in the middle of a heated argument with Chip. Summer almost went back inside, until she heard what the argument was about.

"I'm just saying, she's a fucking slut," Chip was saying. "Everyone's knows she probably..."

"Stop saying that shit, asshole!" Ryan replied. "Summer is a good person, and if you don't stop trashing her, I will make you regret it!"

"She's a bitch!" Chip said.

"Didn't I just..." Ryan began, pulling back his fist only to have Dave grab it.

Summer saw the flash of panic and fear in Ryan's eyes and realized things were about to get much worse. "Let him go now, you fucking asshole!" she yelled, storming over and shoving Dave away from Ryan. "You guys are such god damn idiots!"

"We were just telling him all about your slutty ways," Chip said.

As Ryan balled his fist up again, Summer lightly grabbed his arm and caught his attention. As she saw his eyes up close, she realized he was a little drunk. "Come talk to me, Chino," she said. "Come on, we'll go for a walk and we'll... we'll get away from these morons, okay?"

Ryan hesitated, then nodded and let Summer slide her hand down to grab his and pull him through the crowd and down to the beach. "Where are we going?" he asked.

"Somewhere we can talk," Summer said. As they reached a point where the party was just a dim background sound, Summer sat down in the sand and pulled Ryan down beside her. "Okay, so I majorly screwed up," she blurted out.

"What are you talking about?" Ryan asked.

"Walking away from you like I did," Summer said. "I just... I freaked. I couldn't... I kept picturing how horrible it must have been for you, and that me kissing you must have..."

"No, Summer, no!" Ryan said. "Kissing you... it was... I liked kissing you. That's what scared me."

"What do you mean?" Summer asked.

"The thing with Holly," Ryan began, looking out at the water. "When I went to her beach house, she didn't just come on to me, she... she shoved me into the wall and started groping me and... and I freaked out. I don't even remember pushing her, but next thing I knew she was on the floor and was looking up at me... she was scared of me, Summer. And I couldn't take it if I made you afraid of me, but I was scared of what would happen if I let you get to close and... and I freaked. Or what if... what if I wind up testing positive? What if I get sick?"

"Your last test was negative, right?"

"Yeah, but..."

"I didn't want... okay, I did want to get in your pants right then, but I didn't expect I would," Summer said, smiling as Ryan chuckled slightly. "I like you, Ryan, a lot. And... and now that I know and I've had the chance to process... I can deal with it. I still want to be with you."

"Summer..."

"Unless now you don't want me," she continued.

Ryan's response was to lean forward to rest his forehead against hers. "I wanna be with you," he whispered.

"Then why not?" Summer said. "We'll be careful. When sex becomes a topic of possibility, we'll figure it out. In the meantime... we can try to be happy, right? Can't we do that?"

"I want to," Ryan said, nodding. "Although I don't know when Sandy and Kirsten will let me out of the poolhouse after getting drunk tonight," he added with a small smile.

"We'll just get you lots of coffee and get you all sobered up," Summer said.

"This is how I could fall completely in love with you so easily," Ryan whispered.

"Could?" Summer asked.

"Have," Ryan admitted. "But... we need to take it slow, okay?"

"As slow as you need," Summer agreed with a smile. "How slow is slow?" she asked after a moment.

"Why?" Ryan said.

"Well... can I kiss you?"

Ryan smiled and tilted his head to lightly press his lips to hers in a short but heartfelt kiss. "Yeah, you can," he agreed.

Summer smiled and lightly ran her fingers over his face. "Let's go find Luke and Taylor," she said. "I'm guessing they set us up to talk."

"Probably," Ryan agreed, getting up and wobbling slightly before steadying himself and leaning down to offer Summer a hand up.

"I think Taylor thinks she owes you for helping her with Luke," Summer said as she slowly wrapped an arm around Ryan's waist and smiled as he draped an arm over her shoulders.

"I guess now we're even, then," Ryan said.

As they approached the party again, they heard and saw Luke arguing with Chip and Dave, threatening to kick their asses for messing with his girl.

"What the hell?" Summer asked.

"He's getting all barbarian because Chip pinched my ass," Taylor said, grinning and almost bouncing in excitement. "I'm his girl," she added with a squeal.

"And this is a good thing?" Ryan said.

"He's defending my honor!" Taylor said. "It's really sexy! Almost as sexy as pulling me into the empty classroom..."

"I've already heard the details," Summer said, pressing one ear against Ryan's shoulder and pulling Ryan's hand up to cover her other ear.

"And I don't want to hear them," Ryan agreed, nodding.

"Wait," Taylor said, eyeing them. "Oh my God! You two got together! You're a couple!"

"We're taking it slow," Summer said.

"Fucking assholes," Luke muttered as he walked over. "Hey guys, work things out?"

"Yup," Summer said.

"They're taking it slow," Taylor said, nodding, really bouncing in place this time.

Luke rolled his eyes but moved to wrap his arms around Taylor's waist from behind. "How about we get out of here? This party's lame anyway."

"Full of drunken idiots," Summer said.

"Including me," Ryan said. "I need coffee to sober up."

"Otherwise it'll defeat the purpose of us getting together since he'll be grounded," Summer said, nodding.

"Let's go to the diner," Taylor suggested. "We'll get coffee to clear your head, and food to absorb the leftover alcohol so you don't feel the effects as much."

"Anyone every tell you that you're annoyingly smart?" Summer asked Taylor as the four headed back around to the front.

"Everyone all the time," Taylor replied, shrugging.

"Thought as much," Summer said, though it was with a smile to soften her words.

A couple hours later, Summer drove Ryan home and they sat talking in her car for a good twenty minutes before Ryan finally noticed it was five after midnight and he needed to get inside. "I'll call you tomorrow," he said.

"Okay," Summer agreed, nodding.

Ryan leaned in impulsively and kissed her softly on the lips. "Goodnight," he said.

"Night," Summer said, smiling widely. As Ryan got out and closed the door she let out an excited squeal.

"You do remember that I can see and hear you, right?" Ryan said, turning back with a smile on his face.

"Right, I knew that," Summer said.

"Sure you did," Ryan replied. He watched as she drove away, then headed inside, where he found Kirsten and Sandy in the kitchen having a late night snack. "Sorry I'm late, I..."

"You were in the driveway since before curfew," Sandy said. "That counts."

"Was that Summer's jeep we saw?" Kirsten asked.

"Yeah," Ryan said. "We... we talked."

"And?" Sandy pressed lightly.

"And we're gonna take things slow," Ryan said, starting for the door. "I'll see you tomorrow."

"You might want to take some aspirin tonight to lessen your hangover," Sandy called after him.

Ryan paused in the open door for a moment, grimacing. "Right, thanks," he said before continuing towards the poolhouse, knowing that with the morning would come a discussion of his punishment.

To Be Continued...

On a slightly different topic... I'm gonna try to make some manips sometime soon... I've already made several Ryan/Summer manips in the past, but they've all been made from posed pics, and I wanna try something a little harder... we'll see how it goes...

Love this update.
Ryan defending Summer's honor against the jerks. Summer stopping him before he can get into a fight and with that trouble.
Finally talking about it and getting together.

And I guess, since Ryan didn't get totally plastered and got home on time and just had a good night after a horrible day the parental units will go lightly on him. Talk - yes...since alcohol should not be a coping mechanism, especially for an underage teenager...but not so much with the punishment.
