Title: Defining Love
Author: Mara
Rating: PG-15
Warnings: Mild language.
Summary: Love is one of those things you can't really define sometimes, and the best kind of love is the kind that defies definition entirely.
Notes: I have so many WIPs, but... this idea has been bouncing in my head for a while... Lily's the daughter (Because I just so love writing Lily Atwood... lol) the mom's a surprise, but I think people will guess before it's revealed at the end... lol...

Defining Love

Ryan Atwood had never been good at long term relationships. He tried to be, and if it was up to him all of his relationships would have lasted much longer, but they always ended, and it was usually badly. That's why everyone was so surprised that he chose to be a single dad, and even more surprised when he turned out to be good at it, with his daughter not hating him all the time.

He hadn't been in love with Lily's mother, and they'd spent most of the time they were together arguing and trading insults. But they had gotten closer when she'd turned up pregnant, and even though she'd decided to back out of Lily's life and let Ryan do the work, they'd managed to stay friends and stay in contact. It was the first time one of Ryan's relationships ended without him being left heartbroken.

Ryan finally accepted the Cohens offer to pay for college so that he wouldn't have to work and could spend more time with Lily, instead of getting to see her briefly in the mornings and after she was already asleep at night. There were times, early on, when Ryan resented Seth carefree life on the east coast, where apparently the other boy went out to parties almost every single night and was having 'tons of fun' if his calls and e-mails were to be believed, while Ryan spent his days trying to get through school as quickly as he could, then rushing home to take care of Lily, and staying up half the night to finish papers and do research.

Then came the day when Ryan came home exhausted from classes, sat down at the table beside Lily's high chair and put his head down on folded arms, only to have a handful of cheerios rain down on his head. He'd looked up at his daughter, trying to hide his annoyance since she was really still too little to understand, and she'd smiled widely and said the one thing that changed everything: "Daddy!" After that, all of Ryan's doubts began to melt away, and he refocused himself on finishing school so he could give Lily a good life and not let her down the way his parents had let him down so many times. He had something Seth didn't, he had his baby girl and her beautiful smiles.

It was hard to balance things, but he managed, and once he graduated college with an architecture degree, he joined Kirsten in rebuilding The Newport Group from the ground up. It meant working long hours sometimes, but it also meant that once things got up off the ground they were pulling in money and Ryan could afford to get an apartment for himself and Lily, just in time for her to start school. They fell into a routine of Ryan picking Lily up from school and bringing her back to his office for the afternoon, with her playing at first, later doing her homework, while he finished his work, then they'd go home and Ryan would make them a healthy dinner most nights, though occasionally they got some take out on the way.

Lily's mother wasn't a big part of her life, especially when she was little. There were cards on her birthday and for Christmas, usually with money sent to Ryan a few days earlier along with a request that he find the right gift because she didn't get little girls and didn't know what to get. But as Lily got older, her mother sent her things, like CD's and promotional stuff from the bands she regularly saw at her club, and Ryan would take Lily to see her mother as often as they could arrange, and offered invitations for his ex-girlfriend to join them on trips, something she rarely did but always said she appreciated.

They knew they would never be lovers again, they just clashed if they spent too much time together, but they managed to be friends and Ryan always asked for her opinion on the big things like Lily getting her ears pierced for a second time, while she got Ryan to agree before she let Lily put temporary multicolored streaks in her hair for a concert they were going to together. And when Lily had her appendix out, her mother came running to the hospital and held Ryan's hand while they waited, telling him that their girl would be okay because she was part of both of them and too strong for anything to go wrong.

She had given him his daughter, his beautiful girl who lit up his world. And even though she wasn't there every day, she hadn't abandoned Lily the way Ryan's mother had, she was there when it mattered. She could still offer Ryan a good arguement when he was in the mood to bicker, and a dirty joke when he was in a foul mood and needed something to make him chuckle. No, Ryan had never been in love with Alex Kelly, but he definitely loved her.

The End...?

The question mark is because I don't know if I'll continue this... If I do, this will get edited to be indentified as the prologue, while the actually story will start with explaining how Ryan and Alex got together at all... I also totally wanna do a Ryan/Alex fanvid now... lol... most likely to fit with the description in here that their relationship is full of arguements, but underneath it they're still friends and care...

I agree, you did a very good job with your last Daddy!Ryan story and the way you picture him is so cute i'm almost jealous he's not my man :D

On the other hand I also hope that you don't take on too much stories and get overwhelmed by it. If it works for you, I'd enjoy some more of this, though.

Interesting !!!!!!!!!!

Clever twist.Alex and Ryan as parents. There's just something about the idea of Ryan, as a daddy; that just brings out the warm and fluffy, in almost all of us.

Really nice. I actually can see Ryan doing this. His decision really fits with his character and I love that he accepts the Cohen's help because he knows it is what's best not just for Lily but for himself too.
