Title: Welcome To Eureka
Author: Mara
Fandoms: The OC/Eureka Crossover
Rating: PG
Warnings: None really, except that it's a crossover.
Summary: Ryan Atwood finds himself recruited to be groomed as a new genuis in Eureka.
Notes: A crossover, heavy on the Eureka, since Ryan is the only The OC character who appears... lol... I'll probably write other short fics, and maybe a long one, set within this universe...
Welcome To Eureka
The town looked normal enough to Ryan as he was driven through the town, except for the hovering lawnmower... and the square bubbles... and the four identical guys playing chess. Okay, maybe Eureka wasn't so normal looking, and he certainly knew it wasn't normal since he'd had to sign a confidentiality agreement before being brought into town.
Now he was standing in the doorway of his new bedroom at the boarding house, where he was set to stay with the local shrink as his legal guardian, all while he worked his ass off to 'cultivate his natural mental abilities', to quote the man who'd convinced his former legal guardians to give up custody and let him come to what they had been told was a special school for math genuises. More like a special town for all sorts of genuises.
The whole genuis thing was new to Ryan, though apparently he was enough of one to warrat the guy who owned the town corporation, Nathan Stark of Global Dynamics, to come himself and recruit Ryan for the town. So far, though, he couldn't decide if being a genuis sucked or rocked. Eureka seemed quiet enough, and he was actually getting paid to go to school and study hard, paid more if his test scores got higher.
"Why don't you go explore the town?" Beverly Barlowe, the town shrink and Ryan's new guardian, suggested. "I've got work to do, and you should get to know your new home."
"Sure," Ryan said, setting his bag down on the bed. "I'll unpack later," he added before following Beverly back downstairs and heading out into the strange little town he now called home.

Cafe Diem looked normal enough, at least in the name being a pretty bad pun, evne if it was a better pun than most in the outside world. Then Ryan walke dinside and found all eyes on him as he headed for the counter.
"So, you must be the new kid," the guy behind the counter, Vincent according to his nametag, said. "Math savant?"
"Uh, yeah," Ryan said as he sat down and quickly placed his order, trying to ignore the stares.
"You get used to being the topic of gossip," a girl said from nearby, and suddenly there she was, fire engine red hair swinging slightly as she spun the stool to lean back against the counter. "I'm Zoe Carter."
Ryan smiled and offered his hand. "Ryan Atwood," he said. "Were you new once?"
"Like a month ago," Zoe said. "My dad's the new sheriff, and him and me are like the only non-genuises here. So fair warning if you only like genuis-types."
"Non-genuis is good," Ryan said. "Most of my friends in California were complete idiots," he added in a conspiritorial tone.
"Well, I can't say I'm a complete idiot, I'm just not like everyone else. I'm normal and average," Zoe said. "Everyone else here are the freaks."
"Except here normal is the freakish thing," Ryan replied. "And nowhere is that hair even remotely considered normal," he added after a moment.
Zoe grinned. "You're going to be coming to the high school, right?"
"I may have my math down but I need work with everything else," Ryan said.
"There isn't much to do around here," Zoe said. "Unless you go for the criminal behavior, in which case there is some fun..."
"I have stolen a car before," Ryan said. "And burned down a house. But technically the guy was my brother and I was just with him, and the house was an accident."
"I think there's a new bad seed in town," Zoe joked. "Maybe you'll make me look like the good kid."
"I'll try," Ryan replied, laughing slightly as his food arrived.
"Hey, you ever been inside a house that talks to you?" Zoe asked.
"What?"
"I'm serious!" Zoe said. "My house talks. Her name is S.A.R.A.H., and I think she has a crush on my dad."
"Every second I wonder more and more just what I've gotten myself into," Ryan replied.
"We've got the best game system ever, capitable with like everything, and all the games are already programmed in because the guy who programmed SARAH is a freak," Zoe continued. "You could come over and we could hang out."
"I don't know if I should go over to some strange girl's talking house," Ryan said, giving her a sidewise glance. "And like I said, in this town, you are the strange one."
Zoe grinned. "Hey, I'm strange out there, too."
"So am I," Ryan admitted. "Sure, I'd love to hang out with you and meet your talking house."
"Great," Zoe said. "Come on, eat and we'll go."
"Sounds good," Ryan agreed before digging into his food.
The End
I think my muses may ahve returned, though I'm still accepting any prompts or ideas anyone wants to give me... lol

Date: 2007-01-15 04:26 am (UTC)So is Zoe becoming an alternative-Seth with both of them getting engrossed in computer games? :D In any case I'll be looking forward to more Eureka!Ryan.

Date: 2007-01-15 04:44 am (UTC)Yeah, Zoe's kinda alternative-Seth, but not so self asorbed and with way cool games and ways to play the games... lol... plus they are so gonna get into trouble (of the Eureka variety, of course... lol)... a couple little adventures, and i've got an idea for a longer story with bigger trouble that isn't really their fault, but the idea involves them being the only hope to save Eureka... lol... but there will definitely be more Eureka!Ryan... lol... Next story will be another short one where Ryan meets both SARAH and Sheriff Carter... lol

Date: 2007-01-15 09:06 am (UTC)There's much to look forward to, sadly my favourite character Henry (played by an amazing Joe Morton) does not seem to fit all that well into this crossover. Then again, you could make Ryan get a job at Henry's station to do some repairing stuff. Back in Chino, I'm sure Ryan did more with a car than just stealing one with his brother ;)

Date: 2007-01-15 09:40 am (UTC)Henry's one of my favorites too! Me and my mom both love Henry... and I think I can work him into this... like you said, Ryan probably knows how to fix cars, and I see him as being way more comfortable working with Henry in the garage than working in some lab at Global... I plan on Ryan interacting with everyone at one point or another, in at least the short stories... He's totally gonna get suspiscious of Beverly... lol... and Fargo's gonna get mocked a bit (Even though I adore Fargo... he's just so mockable... lol)
There's so many possibilities here... and I plan on expanding on how Ryan came to be recruited into coming to Eureka, when he found out it wasn't a school for Math Geniuses he was going to, and so on... plus a bunch of mini adventures for Ryan and Zoe... lol... they are totally partners in 'crime' so to speak... lol
