Title: With A Whimper (Part Twenty Two)
Author: Mara
Rating: R
Warnings: Violence, death, language, blood. Did I mention violence and death? And Blood? lol
Summary: Most of the world is either dead or Crazy, but in California a group of survivors tries to find a way to avoid both fates.
Note: I did this little thing summarizing what the characters on other shows I watch are doing during this whole situation. If your curious, go take a look Here, and if you have any fandom requests, I'll consider writing a summary if I watch the show... this is also my way of kinda setting things up for a possible crossover between one of the shows and this one... lol... it wouldn't happen for a while since most of the series take place on the East Coast, but... lol... it could happen...
PART TWENTY TWO

The next few days were spent putting up the interior shutters on the ground floor to provide extra safety while some of the shooters were gone, and modifying the lists to make sure they included everything. Finally, it was time for the first supply run, consisting of Luke and Sadie with Trey 'in charge', to leave the lake, and Ryan pulled his brother aside.
"Be careful," he said.
"I'm gonna come back, little brother," Trey said, firmly. "Come on, I survived being in jail when this shit started, I survived being in Volchak's group for a month after that, hell, I survived our childhood. I think I can survive a supply run."
"Keep an eye on Luke," Ryan advised. "He's not as dumb as he acts, but... he could get distracted by something and not realize there's danger until it's too late..."
"Tell him to watch out for me, that'll keep him focused," Trey said with a grin. "I know they're just teasing him, but the girls are right when they call him your loyal labrador. The guy will follow your orders just so he can get called a good boy."
Ryan chuckled, but nodded, knowing that it was true. "Hey, Luke!" he called. "Keep an eye on Trey, huh? He's even worse at getting into, and then losing, fights than I am!"
"You got it, Chino," Luke replied, nodding.
Ryan nodded, and turned back to Trey. "Be careful."
"I'm not gonna take any big chances," Trey promised. "Just... you be careful, too. And take care of yourself."
"I will," Ryan agreed.
Trey pulled Ryan into a brief hug, then patted his shoulder and climbed into the SUV. "We should be back in like a week and a half, but don't worry until it's been two."
Ryan nodded again. "Right."
"And don't worry so much, it'll be okay," Trey promised again, offering Ryan one last smile before pulling away.
"Trey'll take care of himself and them," Kirsten said as she came up beside Ryan and squeezed his shoulder.
"Yeah," Ryan agreed halfheartedly.
"Why don't you go for a walk with Summer?" Kirsten suggested. "Emily said that you could used some fresh air and sunlight..."
"Yeah, there's an idea," Ryan agreed as they headed back inside. Ryan spotted Emily and limped over on his crutches. "Do you know where Sum..."
"Kitchen," Emily said, not letting him finish. "I told her to take you for a walk and a picnic lunch. You need to relax..."
"And being out in the open where there's woods to provide cover for anyone sneaking up on us will help me do that?" Ryan asked skeptically, even though he nodded. He turned to Alex, who was standing nearby. "We'll have my handgun and we'll take a rifle. Anyone hears shots, you seal this place up and don't open unless we get here and it's clear."
"Got it," Alex said.
Ryan headed into the kitchen, smiling as he found Summer putting a bottle of soda into a picnic basket that was already fairly stuffed. "Are you expecting to feed an army?" he asked her.
"With how little you've been eating, you'll probably eat it all before I get a chance for seconds," Summer replied with a smile. "You okay with a picnic?"
"We're taking my gun and a rifle, but... yeah," Ryan said. "If it means we can maybe pretend for a couple minutes that things aren't... well, aren't a really bad horror movie."
Summer snickered slightly, but nodded and closed the basket. "Right."
Alex came in and handed Summer a rifle, watching her put the strap over her shoulder. "Me and Hailey are going to regularly check out the area all around the lodge, so don't get too... intimate because we might be happening to look your way."
"Yeah, with the shape his leg is in, we're gonna have sex on the ground," Summer said, rolling her eyes.
"I notice it's just sex on the ground you're denying," Alex said before leaving them alone.
"Is it too late for me to tell you to take her back to the gas station?" Summer asked, rolling her eyes.
"A little," Ryan replied. "Come on, let's have a picnic."
~~~
The end of the dock was already set up for their picnic, with a blanket spread out and a couple pillows ready to support and elevate Ryan's leg if he needed it. Summer insisted that he sit against one of the posts, a pillow behind his back, while she unpacked the meal of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, soda, and some canned fruit.
"This is nice," Summer said as she settled against Ryan's side and started on her sandwich.
"Yeah," Ryan agreed, his arm around her as he used a fork to spear a hunk of pear. "Who would have though I would enjoy a nice peaceful picnic?"
"It only took the end of the world to make it happen," Summer countered.
"Do you think Seth would forgive us?" Ryan asked quietly. He tried not to think of his best friend, of how Seth had been those last few hours as he lay dying, but it was always there in the back of his mind that the only reason he and Summer were together was because Seth died.
"We didn't do anything to forgive," Summer replied. "If he was alive and we were together, then maybe we'd need forgiveness, but..."
"Do you think..." Ryan began, then stopped, trying to decide how to say it.
"Would we have gotten together if this hadn't all happened?" Summer said, knowing what he was thinking. "I don't know. I mean, you would have stayed in Chino, I would have been with Seth... even if you'd come back, you would have been with Coop, I'm sure..."
"Seth told me to make sure you were okay," Ryan confessed. "Before he died, he asked me to take care of you."
"That day, when you were in the poolhouse showering and changing, Seth asked me to take care of you," Summer admitted. "He was scared that you... that it would be too much for you and no one would notice until it was too late."
Ryan smiled slightly and absently stroked Summer's hair. "I think he'd be glad we're taking care of eachother," he finally said.
"Sandy would be proud of you," Summer whispered. "Of how you're taking care of everyone."
"I didn't even get to say goodbye," Ryan said, tears starting to form in his eyes. "God, I miss him. Maybe more than I miss Seth. Sandy... Sandy always knew how to fix things, and it's just... it's wrong that he's not here. That he's not gonna know he and Kirsten's baby."
"I know," Summer said, turning to wrap her arms around Ryan's waist. "I miss my dad so much. I even miss Gloria, and I hated her. But I keep wondering what daddy would think of me learning more about medicine, and I wish I could ask him..."
"He'd be proud," Ryan said, holding her close. "He'd be so proud of you."
"We'll be okay, Chino," Summer said through her tears. "We have to be so that we didn't lose all of them for nothing."
Ryan nodded and held her closer. "We'll make this place safe for us, and for kids, and Kirsten's baby... for our kids... it'll be safe. We'll be safe. I promise."
"I believe you," Summer whispered.
Date: 2006-12-18 10:18 pm (UTC)Ryan/Summer. Sigh. They're so good together. The picnic was really lovely, you could tell they obviously care about each other and the way they share their feelings is nicely done.
Can't wait for the next one.
Date: 2006-12-19 01:55 am (UTC)hehe... I can promise you, it's gonna be a very good thing that they put up those shutters... and Volchak and his crew will definitely make another appearance in this story... but the two aren't neccesarily related... lol...
Ryan and Summer are definitely good together... they feel comfortable by this point to express their doubts about things, and to admit how much their still hurting over their losses...
updates?
Date: 2006-12-28 04:51 am (UTC)You just inspired me to work on the next chapter of WAW, so I am off to do that... lol
Date: 2006-12-28 04:31 pm (UTC)This is the first story of yours that I've read all the way through so far, but I'm making my way through the rest. Let me know if you need any banners or anything made for any of your stories, I would be happy to help!
I LOVE Ryan/Summer, I'm so glad you seem to write them exclusively hehe. It's hard to find good Ryan/Summer writers who haven't completely switched over to the Ryan/Taylor side of fic.
Date: 2006-12-28 09:14 pm (UTC)If you get inspired, feel free to make banners or any other art based on my fics... the banner I have for WAW is pretty much the grand extent of my abilities (Well... and a couple halfway decent Ryan/Summer manips that I've made and turned into icons... lol) so I'd be glad to have some GOOD art to illustrate...
Yeah, I do pretty much write them exclusively... I may someday write a little Ryan/Taylor (If I can't have R/S on the show, R/T is second best... lol), but Ryan/Summer will always be my primary The OC pairing...
