Title: The Unexpected (Part Three)
Author: Mara
Rating: PG-13 (Chapters with higher ratings will be mentioned)
Warnings: Some violence in the first chapter, a mention of sexual assault (NOT of Ryan!) later... and near the end a smutty chapter... though maybe the warning on that one should be it was my first attempt at smut and is probably horrible... lol
Summary: A simple run to the store ends in tragedy as guilt abounds and the meaning of family is pondered.
Notes: Yeah... ummm... so... I TOTALLY should not have made the promise of other fics being updated... lol... I'm gonna TRY to go finish the next chapter of 'Heavily Broken' and edit it right after I post this one... so we shall see if I do or not... I was gone ALL day today (Been home like maybe 45 minutes...) so I just didn't have time...

PART THREE

"You should be in bed," Kirsten said as she came downstairs at 4AM and found Seth sitting on the kitchen counter.

"Couldn't sleep," Seth said, shrugging. "What about you?"

"Same problem," Kirsten admitted.

"I can't stop thinking about how he looked," Seth said. "Why would someone do that, mom? I mean, you guys are right, there is no bad element in Newport. How could this happen?"

"I don't know honey," Kirsten said. "I talked to a police officer, and he said there's been two other muggings in the past few weeks, but no one got hurt because they had their wallet and turned it over right away. And they didn't have a Ryan Atwood to tackle the mugger," she added with a slight smile. "He may have saved my life. When I didn't have a wallet... I think that man would have killed me."

"Is it wrong that I'm glad he was there? And is it wrong that I wish he wasn't?" Seth asked, sighing.

Kirsten walked over and leaned against the counter, wrapping an arm around her son. "No on both counts. I'm glad he was there, but I wish to god he hadn't been."

Seth leaned against his mom. "He's glad he was there. I know that much. He won't care that he got hurt, as long as you're okay."

"He never cares what happens to him as long as everyone else is okay," Kirsten replied. She kissed the top of Seth's head. "Hey, I had an idea."

"What?" Seth asked, straightening.

"How about, when Ryan comes home, he moves into the house? The pool house was for the stranger your dad brought home, not for your brother."

"Really?" Seth asked, grinning. "That's great!"

Kirsten smiled. "Do you think he'll agree?"

Seth snorted. "His ears'll probably turn red and he'll mumble that you don't have to go to all that work, he's fine in the poolhouse."

"But I'm not fine with him being there," Kirsten said. "I want to be able to check in on him, especially when he first comes home, without traipsing all the way downstairs and around the pool. And he belongs inside with us."

"Yes, he does!" Seth agreed. "We cna get him all moved in before he coems home! Heck, we could probably get him moved in within an hour! The guy owns next to nothing."

Kirsten nodded sadly, then a smile formed. "How about we fix that? Later on, after we've visited Ryan, we'll go get him some more things. Clothes, books, posters. Everything he needs to feel at home."

"Comics books," Seth added in. "He needs to start working on a decent collection."

Kirsten laughed and grabbed Seth to give him a hug and kiss his temple. "A small collection to start," she agreed.

~~~~
"This one, definitely," Seth said 3 hours later, holding out a picture he had just found.
Kirsten took it and bit her lip to keep from laughing. "When was this taken?"
"Someone took it at the party before the fashion show last summer. Summer got ahold of some with me and Ryan in them and gave me copies," Seth explained.
Kirsten chuckled slightly as she looked down at the picture of Ryan and Seth in their suits, Seth looking a little nervous and Ryan looking cool and confident. "He was definitely more prepared for that party than for the fashion show," she said.
"He was in his element," Seth agreed. "And if he hadn't been there then he wouldn't have been there when the waterpolo team was trying to kick my ass."
"You should have told me that night that Ryan was defending you," Kirsten scolded. "Instead of letting me think he started a fight."
"I didn't even think of that, Mom. It happened so quick, and after I'd been a jerk to him..."
"Why?"
"Summer was flirting with him and I thought he was trying to..."
"Move in on your game?" Kirsten asked.
"Yeah. But don't ever say that again," Seth said.
"He wouldn't do that to you," Kirsten said. "You're his brother."
Seth grinned. "He didn't give me a hard time about anything I told him. Maybe a few off looks if it was weird, but... he didn't tell me I was an idiot, or dreaming. He just nodded and said it was cool. That was a first."
"He made us become a family again," Kirsten agreed. "I think your Dad and I were loosing you until Ryan came along."
Seth nodded. "I kinda started appreciating you guys again. Especially after we met Mrs. Atwood." He shuddered at the woman's name. "I don't ever wanna repeat that experience."
Kirsten nodded in agreement. "I never want to see that woman again," she agreed. The phoen rang then, and the pair exchanged worried glances before both diving for it. Kirsten reached it first, though. "Hello?"
"Hey," Sandy's tired voice came over the line.
"Sandy," Kirtsen said. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, but I wanted to make sure you'd be here as soon as visiting hours start. He's showing signs of waking up, and it would probably be good if you're there."
"Believe me, Seth and I will be there at the dot of 9."
"You soudn wide awake," Sandy said.
"We both got up at aroudn 4 and couldn't sleep, so we've been working on a few homecoming presents for Ryan."
"A little premature, don't you think?" Sandy asked, chuckling quietly.
"Well, we already decided, he's moving into the house once he comes home. At least while he recovers, then we cna talk about him going back tot he poolhouse if he wants, though I want him to stay in the house," Kirsten said. "And Seth suggested, since Ryan hasn't especially shown an interest for any sports teams, that we frame a few pictures for the wall, and make him an album of his life since he's come to live with us. So we've been going through pictures for the last few hours. There's some wonderful shots of him."
"And how many would he want anyone to see?" Sandy asked.
"Probably 2 of them," Kirsten admitted as Seth held up another picture, this one catching him midcheer after winning at a video game while Ryan just gave him a half amused, half exasperated look. "Althought there is a serious deficit of picture sof him with either of us. They are almsot all him and Seth. He needs a few pictures with the rest of his fmaily," she said, directing the words at Seth who muttered somethign about not appreciating the brotherly bond.
Sandy chuckled again, then fell quiet, his voice inaudible as he spoke to someone else.
"Sandy?" Kirsten asked.
"He's having a nightmare," Sandy said into the phone, and this tiem when he spoke his voice was audible. "Ryan, it's okay, your safe," he said soothingly.
"We'll be right there," Kirsten said, already standing. "Tell him we're coming."
"I will," Sandy promised before hanging up.
"Mom?" Seth asked. "Is he awake?"
"He's having a nightmare and might be waking up," Kirsten said. "Go get shoes, socks, and a jacket," she ordered.
Seth nodded quickly and took off upstairs. "Be right back," he called over his shoulder.
Kirsten, for her part, was glad she had gotten dressed earlier, when the decision ahd been made to stay up, so all she had to do was slip on the shoes that were on the floor near the couch. But as she reached for them, she found herself having to stop and take several deep, steadying breaths. "PLease let him be okay," she whispered.
"Mom?"
Kirsten looked up. "I'm jsut scared he'll be mad at me for taking him shopping."
Seth smiled humorlessly. "Who knew shopping was dangerous to more than just a guy's rep?" he asked.
Kirsten smiled sadly and pulled on her shoes before standing and heading for the door, catching her son's arm as she diod. "Let's go see your brother."
~~~~

"Sandy?" Kirsten called as she and Seth approached the entrance and saw Sandy standing outsidel. "Is soemthing..."

"Everything's fine," Sandy quickly assured her, smiling. "They moved him to his new room a few minutes ago, I'm just waiting for you two."

"So he's doing okay?" Kirsten asked.

"Fine when I saw him," Sandy assured her, kissing her forehead then reaching over to ruffle Seth's hair. "How about you guys?"

"I wanna see my brother," Seth said. "I'll be a lot better after I do."

"So will I, baby," Kirsten agreed. "Sandy, you know where his new room is?"

Sandy nodded and moved between his wife and son, putting an arm around each of them. "Let's go," he said.

~~~~
"Does he look any better?" Seth asked, pulling to a stop outside the room.
"A little bit," Sandy said.
"And he has a lot less machines hooked up to him," Sarah said as she exited the room. "Not to mention the fact that he's started mumbling at me and my nurses to go away, so I think he's awake."
"Either that or talking in his sleep," Seth said. "He drove us crazy in Tijuana, muttering all night about pink zebras." When he saw the looks they were giving him, he shrugged. "Don't ask me, he was the one dreaming it."
Sarah covered her mouth with her hand to try and smother her laughter. "Well, I think he's awake, since he specifically said he didn't need a doctor."
"Is there anything we need to know before we see him?" Kirsten asked, holding her son back.
Sarah shook her head. "Your husband knows the range for Ryan's vitals, if they go out of range, hit the call button and a nurse will come right away. Nurse's will be checking in at least every half hour, I will check in as often as I can. Basically? Just be there. Especially you, Mrs. Cohen. As I told you last night when we spoke, when we were trying to prep him for surgery, before the sedative kicked in, he kept asking about you. It'll be a great releif for him to see you."
"Dr. Anderson?" A nurse said as she stuck her head out. "He's awake."
Sarah gestured for the Cohens to go ahead in adn followed them, watching as the three surrounded Ryan's bed, Kirsten closest to his head.
"Ryan? Sweetie?" Kirsten whispered, gently brushing his hair back from his forehead.
Ryan blinked open his eyes for a second, then they slid shut again. But a moment later they opened again and the concern in them was obvious. "Kir... you okay?"
Kirsten nodded, close to tears. "I'm fine, thanks to you, baby. You saved my life."
"He was gonna hurt you."
"I know," Kirsten said, kissing his forehead. "My hero."
"Ry, man, you didn't have to go all superhero to get attention," Seth said, forcing a smile. "I'm more than happy to share them with you!"
Ryan returned the smile. "Didn't exactly think, Seth. Just moved."
"A little advice?" Sandy said, gently ruffling Ryan's hair. "Next time? Don't move."
"Or move faster," Seth said with a shrug.
Kirsten lightly smacked Seth's shoulder. "Don't encourage him to put his life at risk," she said.
"Geeze, Mom! I can't encourage him to fight, I can't encourage him to put his life at risk..." Seth said, grinning as he saw the smile spreading across Ryan's pale face.
"When'd you encourage me to fight?" Ryan asked.
"Last night, I told you to wake up cause who else will keep the waterpolo team from beating me up," Seth said.
Ryan snorted. "You just tell them I'll get them when I'm out of here," he promised, raising his fist slightly.
Seth tapped knuckles with him, smiling. "Good plan."
Kirsten rolled her eyes, though she couldn't help smiling. "What are we going to do with you two?"
"Keep them, feed them," Sandy suggested.
"Put up with us 'cause you love us?" Seth added.
"I have to do that with all three of you," Kirsten said, rolling her eyes, though appreciating the easy chatter and the effect it was having on Ryan, who seemed more alert with every joke. She sat down in a chair and brushed his hair back from his face again. "How do you feel?"
"Okay."
"Don't 'okay' me, Ryan Atwood," Kirsten scolded. "Honey, you were shot, in the chest. No matter how much pain meds they've put into you, there's no way you aren't in at least a little pain."
"Does sting a little..." Ryan said, smiling as Kirsten gave him an exasperated look. "Am I gonna be okay?"
"You'll be fine," Sarah promised as she double checked his heart monitor. "Enjoy your visit with your family, because I'm going to have to ask at least one of them to leave in about a half hour. You need to rest," she added as she and the nurses left them alone.
"Not going," Seth said quickly.
"Seth..." Sandy started.
"Dad, you got all night with him!" Seth replied.
"I think I was unconscious," Ryan said. "Not sure if that counts."
Sandy chuckled. "He's got a point. And you should try to get to at least a few classes today," he added to Seth.
"Dad! How am I going to sit through history knowing Ryan's in the hospital?" Seth protested. "I mean, yeah, okay, he's gonna be fine, but still! The hospital is boring, and smells weird, and... and..."
"And you'll worry non-stop cause that's who you are," Ryan teased.
"Now I know you'll be fine," Sandy said, smiling down at the teenager. "Giving your brother a hard time."
Ryan smiled slightly. "When can I get out of here?"
"Not for a while," Sandy said. "Dr. Anderson said at least two weeks, maybe longer depending on how you heal."
"That bad?" Ryan asked.
"That bad," Kirsten confirmed. She tried to hold back the tears she coudl feel wellign up in her eyes. "I thought we were going to lose you there for a while. Don't you ever, ever, put yourself in danger like that again, Ryan. Okay? I don't want to lose you."
"He was gonna hurt you," Ryan said. "I couldn't let him do that."
I really enjoyed Kirsten and Seth's conversation about Ryan. And a miracle happened. Somewhere in that conversation Seth actually thought about Ryan as something else than... well... someone to make him look cool.
They were selecting photos for Ryan. I hope it'll be a nice surprise for him. And it's good that Kirsten decided that Ryan deserves to be in the house. He's part of their family, for heaven's sakes!
Heh... Pink zebras... You captured Seth's humor with that one. Or with the 'move faster' line. lol
Ryan's awake. Yay! And on with those few lines that Ryan said, you really captured him. Again! How do you do that? And my heart melted when Dr. Anderson told them that Ryan kept asking for Kirsten before the surgery. You really have made me love Kirsten and Ryan's mother-son-relationship.
Thanks for the chapter!
That was a great post !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Such a funny chapter, loved everything about it. Totally awesome.
But, pink zebra's? Dude. That's just weird.
And even after they said it over and over again, that Ryan shouldn't risk his life for anyone, he's still going to do it. And that is Ryan. He's going to help people, no matter what. He moves first and thinks about it later. I've said it so many times before, you write Ryan really well. Seth too, I might add. And them together is just too funny.
Can't wait for the next update... Looking forward to it.
Aww!I love that Kirsten's decided, that Ryan is moving into the house proper.Something that on the show should've happened in "The Debut"!Happy that he's awake,and the end was great.
First of all I love the conversation between Seth and KIrsten and how they both acknowledged that Ryan moving in with them actually made them a family again. Liked the fact that Kirsten wants Ryan in the house where she can keep an eye on him. I love how she tells Seth "Let's go see your brother" showing just how she feels about Ryan.
