Chapter Five
3 days later, Ryan sat at a table in a spacious library at Harbor, hunched over the admissions test as he filled in the answers. He expected it to be much harder, particular the math and english sections, but surprisingly he had gotten through both of those without any really trouble or hesitation. Now he found himself stuck on the social studies portion, on a question about the economy and how it affected the different social classes. All he really knew about the economy was that when it was booming there were more rich guys coming to Hanlin street and they paid more money. But he sincerely doubted that answer would help him get into the school, something Kirsten seemed to have her heart set on, so instead he made guesses and wrote down what he hoped were good answers.
He was reading over some of his answers when the teacher giving the test came over to tell him time was up, and he heaved a sigh of relief once the test was in the teacher's hands. Now it was over, he had either done well and gotten in like Kirsten wanted, or he'd failed and would get to go to public school, where he would much rather be, there was no changing that now. He slowly stood and gathered the notebook and pencil he'd used, then headed out into the hall to meet up with Kirsten, who was waiting.
"Well, how do you feel you did?" Kirsten asked, smiling.
Ryan shrugged. "The best I could," he said. "I think I did okay on most of it."
"Well, we'll know soon," Kirsten said as they walked towards the Dean's office to meet with her. "I'm sure you did fine."
"Yeah," Ryan said, sighing again and glancing up just in time to see two of the three girls from the picture, the slutty blonde and the pretty brunette, walking across the hall ahead of them and heading down some steps. Maybe going to Harbor wouldn't be such a bad thing, he thought to himself as he watched them walk away.

"Well," Dr. Kim said a little while alter as she looked over Ryan's test. "The answers for the social studies section was less than we usually like..."
"Not every 15 year-old reads the wall street journal and knows what the economy is doing," Kirsten pointed out.
"I'm aware of that," Dr. Kim said. "Which is why, when I take a look at Ryan's math, science, and english scores, I'm willing to look past the rest. He answered every question in those sections correctly, even the ones that usually go right over the heads of our students." She nodded slightly to herself. "I think Ryan will make a fine addition to Harbor. As long as he works on the other areas to bring himself up to par."
"That's wonderful," Kirsten said, offering Ryan a smile which he awkwardly returned as they both stood. "I'm sure he can do it without a problem."
"If not, we can arrange tutors," Dr. Kim said. She stood and held her hand out to Ryan, who shook it. "Welcome to Harbor, Ryan. You can start next Monday."
"Thank you, ma'am," Ryan replied. And then, just as quickly, he and Kirsten were standing outside Dr. Kim's office. "Well, I guess that went well," he said.
"Very well," Kirsten said, patting his back. "Now, how about we go get some lunch, then see about shopping..."
"For what?" Ryan said, frowning. "You already bought me..."
"You need more clothes," Kirsten insisted.
As they walked away, Holly stared at Ryan's ass appreciatively. "He'd look good with less clothes," she said.
Summer let out a disgusted sigh, but couldn't help her own appreciative look, first at Ryan's ass, then at his face as he and Kirsten turned and started down the stairs. When Ryan glanced back, he and Summer's eyes locked for a moment and she lifted a hand in a little wave. Maybe this year would pick up afterall, even if Marissa was in Woodland thanks to the mess with her little psycho boyfriend Oliver. "He is kinda cute," she said to Holly, not wanting to encourage the girl, but knowing she'd never get a moment's peace if she didn't say something.
"Kinda cute?" Holly countered. "I gotta find out his name and get him to my next party. Skinny dipping in the hot tub would be so damn good."
"His arm's in a cast," Summer pointed out. "Water is bad for a guy with a cast."
"Okay, strip poker or something," Holly said. "The point is to be naked with a naked him."
Summer let out another disgusted sigh and turned away to head for her locker. "Sure, Holly, whatever you say," she said.

When Ryan and Kirsten got home, it was with another armload of shopping bags and a raised eyebrow from Sandy. "Buy out the store?" he asked as he gave Kirsten a quick kiss. "How'd it go at Harbor?"
"I start on Monday," Ryan said quietly. "Which apparently meant I needed a whole huge wardrobe."
"Ah, honey," Sandy said. "You know Ryan's rocking the jean's and a wifebeater look!"
Kirsten sighed and rolled her eyes. "Men!" she protested half heartedly as she left the kitchen, pausing only to kiss a startled Ryan on the cheek.
"I'm gonna go put this stuff away," Ryan said, gathering the bags.
"I'll help," Sandy said, taking most of them. "You need to rest that arm."
"Right, sorry," Ryan said.
"Stop apologizing, kid," Sandy said, careful to keep his tone light. He'd seen evidence in the last 3 days that Ryan was still having nightmares, though thankfully without the violent reaction that he'd had that first morning, and Sandy thought it was time they talked about what Ryan had been through. "So, how bad did it get?"
"What?" Ryan asked.
"We haven't talked about it yet, but I think we need to," Sandy said. "So, tell me, how bad did it get?"
"I think getting beaten until I couldn't move then being raped was the low point," Ryan said in a cold tone of voice.
Sandy winced at that, and nodded. "Right, I'm sure it was. But before that..."
"I was homeless for 2 weeks before I got desperate enough," Ryan said. "It was taking me a whole day of walking for miles, looking in the gutters, to get enough change to buy a gas station sandwhich, and I couldn't take it anymore, so I sucked a guy off in an alley to pay for a good meal and a hotel room for the night. Then the next night I let a guy fuck me in an alley, and I sucked off 3 more guys. Do you want me to keep going?" he snapped.
"Ryan..."
"If I had options, I would have taken them," Ryan continued as though he hadn't heard Sandy. "My fucking friends, the people I used to always be there for, couldn't even clear a couple square feet on their floor for me to crash. I would have slept sitting up in a corner, and they all knew it, but no one had room. Theresa, fucking Theresa... my best friend since we were eight fucking years old, and all she could say is 'Eddie wouldn't like it...'... And god damn Eddie... I was good enough to borrow money from, to use to get a hot chick's phone number, but I wasn't good enough to crash on his floor when I had nowhere else to go..."
"I'm so sorry, kid," Sandy said.
"For what?" Ryan asked harshly.
"For not checking up on you. For letting you slip through the cracks..."
Ryan shook his head. "Even if you'd checked, I would have been gone, Sandy," he said. "I went back 2 days after my mom chose her asshole boyfriend over me, and they'd moved. They tossed my stuff in a dumpster. I grabbed what I needed and... and I walked away. You wouldn't have found me."
"I should have tried," Sandy insisted. "I'm sorry I didn't try."
Ryan shook his head and looked down at the clothes from the shopping bags. "Kirsten made me get some shirts with short sleeves, for when the bruises fade," he said, his tone making it clear he wanted to change the subject.
"They will fade," Sandy said. "You just gotta give it time and let us help."
Ryan looked up at Sandy, knowing that the man wasn't talking about the physical bruises, and nodded slightly. "Yeah," he said. "They'll fade."

Date: 2006-11-17 03:24 am (UTC)Yay! Marissa's not there to mess everything up. Big thank you sent to your way, Mara! And Holly... So shallow.
It's amazing how blunt Ryan can be but he did made his point clear. It's not something someone likes to talk about. And loved Sandy for understanding that it would take a lot of time to heal Ryan's invisible bruises.
And finally... Took a look at your user icons. Loved the Summer one. She was so beautiful. Oh, and Summer Heavily Broken -icon... Wonderful! She looked so beautiful but sad at the same time. Oh, and Ryan looked so good at your default icon. Just makes me wanna drool all over my monitor. But I'm sensible and won't. lol

Date: 2006-11-17 04:40 am (UTC)Nope, Marissa is not there! She will be eventually, but not right now... and Holly... gotta love the slutty blonde! lol...
It's a different kind of defense mechanism... one kind is just being quiet, the other is being blunt in hopes that they'll just get too freaked out to press on the topic... but yes, Sandy rocks for realizing Ryan needs time to fully heal, and that his body will heal long before the rest of him...
Thanks! Summer is always beautiful... lol... and I chose the pic I did for the Summer-HB icon simply because of how sad she looks... you'll learn soon enough that Summer is broken in her own ways in this fic, not the least of which being Marissa being in the loonybin... lol... and come on! Ryan ALWAYS looks good! lol... I drool over him regularly... lol
