Chapter Four
"So, you tore out a couple stitches, got glass stuck in your cast, and only have a bagel and cream cheese in your stomach?" Dr. Sarah Anderson asked as she stood in front of Ryan, pulling off the gloves she'd worn while fixing his stitches. "Does that sound about right?"
"Pretty much," Ryan agreed, hanging his head.
"Don't worry, no real damage done," the doctor said, trying to sound reassuring.
"Is there anything we need to know?" Sandy asked. Kirsten was out in the waiting room, since Ryan had seemed embarassed by the idea of once again being shirtless in front of her, but she had made it clear with one glance that she expected Sandy to stay and be there for Ryan.
"Try to help Ryan stay calm and relaxed," Dr. Anderson advised. "The less tension, the less chance that he'll tear out his stitches again..."
"I tore out the stitches because I had a fucking flashback," Ryan muttered.
"What was that?" she asked.
Sandy sighed. "Ryan was... assaulted 5 days ago. That's how he got hurt. He... he had a flashback and I guess it was a panic attack."
"Are you seeing a therapist, Ryan?" Dr. Anderson asked gently. "Because it might help..."
Ryan shook his head. "No, and I'm not going to," he said, directing the last part at Sandy. "Are you done? Can I put my shirt back on?"
"Go ahead," Dr. Anderson said, shooting a glance at Sandy, who shrugged to show his own uncertainty. "Why don't you go ahead out to tell Mrs. Cohen that we're done, Ryan? I want to talk to Mr. Cohen about your prescriptions."
Ryan looked between them, a little supiscious, but pulled his shirt on and hastily buttoned it before leaving the room.
"Is he okay?" Sandy asked.
"I assume by assault you meant sexually?" Dr. Anderson countered. "His file mentions that he was... working... on the street..."
"I'm aware of what he was doing," Sandy said. "Both Kirsten and I are. Apparently he insisted on a condom, the john refused and decided not to take 'no' for an answer."
"Poor kid," Dr. Anderson said, shaking her head. "Was he aware of his surroundings durign the flashback? Or did he black out?"
"I don't know," Sandy admitted. "I know he hasn't been okay with physical contact, especially from me. But this morning he... when I walked in there he was slamming his arm into the mirror, and I restrained him so he wouldn't hurt himself... he grabbed hold of my arm and was holding on for dear life... I've never heard a sound like the cries he was making..."
"You might want to consider a family session with a therapist, all of this has to be unsettling for you and your wife, as well..."
"Ryan won't even go for himself, I doubt he'll go with us," Sandy said. "Now, you said something about prescriptions?"

Ryan sat beside Kirsten on the couch in the waiting room, absently flipping through a tabloid that had been sitting on the coffee table. He paused on an article about some event in Newport, and scanned it to see if by chance Sandy or Kirsten were mentioned. Sure enough, the event was somehow tied to Kirsten's work, and there was even a picture of Kirsten and a man identified as her father.
More interesting, in Ryan's opinion, were the 3 girls his age that were visible off to one side. The first was blonde and slutty looking, the type Trey had loved but Ryan had always hated. Then came a girl who looked like she could do with a few dozen calorie heavy meals. Finally, half cropped out of the picture, was a pretty brunette girl who had curves in all the right places, and a killer smile. The caption, unfortunately, didn't identify the girls, only calling them local debutantes, and Ryan was left wondering as Sandy finally came out holding a piece of paper.
"Dr. Anderson added a sleeping pill to the others," he reported as Ryan and Kirsten stood. "Help you get a good night's sleep, hopefully without the bad dreams."
"Okay," Ryan said, frowning slightly. He didn't like the idea of taking something to make him sleep deeper, mostly out of years of needing to wake up quickly, but at the same time he didn't want to freak out again and destroy anythign else of the Cohens.
"Let's go get it filled, then we'll go shopping," Kirsten said, placing a gentle hand on Ryan's back. "They already have our billing information since Seth's doctor works in this office, too."

What seemed like hours later, Ryan and the Cohens walked back into the Cohen house, carrying several shopping bags that held everything from clothes to a sketchpad and colored pencils Kirsten had insisted on getting Ryan. "I'm gonna go put the stuff away," Ryan said awkwardly, gathering all the bags and heading out to the poolhouse.
"I don't think he's used to be showered with whatever he needs, let alone things he wants," Sandy said, his tone sad.
"Well, he better get used to it," Kirsten said. "Because he is not going to do without again."
"And here you didn't like the idea of him coming here," Sandy teased, wrapping his arms around her from behind.
Kirsten smiled and leaned back agaisnt her husband. "It's a woman's perogative to change her mind," she said. "Besides, how could I not want to protect him?"
Sandy smiled and held her a little tighter. "I really think we can help him. If he'll let us."

Once the clothes were put away on the shelves or in the closet, Ryan sat down on the bed with his new sketchpad and colored pencils, and picked out the black one to start. Whenever he had found the moeny to get a new notebook, he'd always just put pencil to paper and started drawing, not knowing what was going to end up on the page until it began to take shape, and that had become his tradition, his way of christening the new books. This time, after a moment of drawing careful lines, the face of the brunette girl from the photo began to come off the paper, her smile almsot as radiant in the sketch as it had been in the photo. This was definitely a girl he wanted to meet.
To Be Continued...
I think everyone can guess who the 'pretty brunette girl' is... lol... but the 'blonde slutty girl' is Holly, and obviously 'needs a couple dozen calorie heavy meals' girl is Marissa... lol

Date: 2006-11-15 03:54 am (UTC)Yay, Ryan saw Summer's picture. Is she going to be a mystery girl for him now or will the face get a name soon? Loved the last part where Ryan draw her. She's already taken a place in his life without ever meeting him.
Excellent description. Instantly knew she was Marissa. Wondered about the blonde but when I saw your footnote it all made sense. And knew who the third one was, obviously.
Anyway, looking forward for more.

Date: 2006-11-15 04:08 am (UTC)She'll be a mystery for a little while, though he WILL see her in person, very briefly, soon... they'll officially meet a couple chapters from now...
lol... I've always, even back during that brief period of time that I like Marissa, thought she was too thin... lol... and if you look at ALL of Ryan's other girlfriends? They were all nice normal healthy weights, with actual real curves... lol... Marissa's almost a stick figure... lol
I'll have more out soon... maybe tomorrow...

Date: 2006-11-15 07:47 am (UTC)Thank you so much! I'm still not sure what possessed me to sign up for Brandywine's hiatus challenge thing, but I'm glad I did because the feedback I recieved on the initial story I wrote for that is the reason I've kept posting... best high in the world (for me at least) is seeing that someone's liked what I've written... lol... of course it's more fun when someone really stupid gives me feedback about 'You have the couples wrong, on the show it's...' (I actually got feedback using that EXACT phrase once on FF.net! lol)... then I get to laugh at the stupidity... ahem... sorry... went off on a tangent... lol... anyway, Thanks again for your kind words!
