Finality

Ryan stood with the Cohens at Marissa's funeral, staring straight ahead and ignoring the looks he got from the Newpsies in attendance. Some looked at him with pity, for he was the boy who had been stranded on the road with Marissa's body in his arms all night. Some looked at him in disgust, because he had not done more to save Marissa's life, instead he chose to sit on the road all night with her body in his arms. And some looked at him with curiosity, wanting to know why the others either hated him or felt bad for him.

He didn't notice as Sandy rested a comforting hand on his shoulder, too focused on the pure white casket that held Marissa's fragile body. But he did notice when Julie turned and handed him a white rose to put on Marissa's casket, and how she suddenly surged forward to hug him and whisper a reassurance that she didn't blame him. He was right after the Cooper-Roberts family in laying down his rose, and when he did he let his fingers rest on the lid of the casket for a moment before walking back to where he had stood.

As they lowered Marissa into the ground, he was flanked by Sandy and Kirsten, resting their hands on his shoulders, but he didn't notice as he watched the girl he had loved, despite her many faults, for 3 years being lowered into the ground. Then Julie was in front of him again, urging him to join she, Jimmy, and Kaitlin in tossing a handful of dirt onto the casket. He didn't understand Julie's newfound compassion, her reasons for treating him as family instead of as her enemy, but he still appreciated it and did as she wanted, his face emotionless throughout it all.

When it was finally over, people began to drift away to their cars, but Ryan stayed behind, not following the Cohens. They took the hint and went to wait at the car for him, leaving Ryan to kneel beside Marissa's headstone and gently kiss his fingers then press them to her name. "Goodbye, Marissa," he whispered before standing and walking away. He decided in that moment, as he walked away from her grave, that the next time he was at a funeral it would be his own.

THE END

Really hate those Newpsies. And I had to wonder Julie's behaviour. You did an excellent job with this one.

Julie is always scary. But when she's nice... that's the stuff that causes nightmares. *grin*

The part about how the next funeral, Ryan would ever attend; would be his own.Is that a foreshadow, of what's to come?Good story by the way.
