I kinda like this one... lol

Chapter Ten

"I'm telling you," Julie said a few days later as she, Kirsten, and Marissa helped Summer make wedding plans. "A fairytale princess type of gown would be perfect on you."

"And I'm telling you, we plan on getting married in August, the height of summer. I'm wearing a silk slip dress," Summer insisted.

"Summer's right, Julie," Kirsten said. "In a big dress she'll pass out halfway through the reception from heat exhaustion!"

"How's something like this?" Marissa asked, passing a sketchbook to Summer. "I mean, we'll find something in a store like it..."

"Coop! It's perfect!" Summer said, looking over the light dress that was hastily drawn but still conveyed perfection. There was a hint of lace overlay over the entire thing, cap sleeve, and beside the dress were notes suggesting Lilies as the flowers for the bouquet and to be tucked into Summer's hair. "Did you do this?"

Marissa shrugged. "I was just listening, and..."

"I didn't know you could draw," Julie said, pouting slightly since even she had to admit the dress was beautiful.

"Ryan actually helped me with that throughout school. He kept giving me art lessons to help me figure out how to get a human looking figure," Marissa said.

"Do you think we could get this made in time?" Summer asked.

"You want THAT dress?" Marissa asked, surprised. "It was just to give us a visual to shop with!"

"Coop! I love it!" Summer said.

"Love what?" Hailey asked as she joined them. "Sorry I'm late, had a call from the company in Tokyo."

"Take a look at what Marissa sketched for me," Summer said. "She meant it a as visual for while shopping, but I want that dress!"

"We can get this made in time," Hailey said, nodding.

"Really?" Summer asked.

"Sure," Hailey said. "Please, you're marrying my nephew, this will be priority. And if you want us to make bridesmaids gowns too, we can."

"Thank you!" Summer said, excited. "See, Coop! It's great!"

"The actually makers will need some more details though," Hailey said. "Like, we should go fabric shopping and at least get samples of stuff you like, Summer. But if there's like a lace that is a must for it, we'll buy twice as much as the dress will need just in case of a mistake."

"Okay," Summer said, still excited that she was going to get a dressed designed by her best friend and made by Hailey's company. "We gotta talk Bridesmaids dresses, right? Since wedding dress is settled?"

"First, your bouquet," Kirsten said. "The bride is always most important. What kind of flowers do you want?"

"Lilies, like Coop suggested," Summer said. "The ones that have the big petals that kinda flop open?"

"And we put one in your hair," Marissa said, picturing it. "Like on one side it's scooped back from your face and kinda twisted and pinned, then we put in a lily..."

"And the rest is curled," Summer said. "Ryan told me once that he loves it when my hair is curled," she explained, smiling at the memory.

"Then it's gotta be curled," Marissa agreed. "And how about the bridesmaids have little bouquets of something else? Like we also get a lily for Ryan's boutonniere, but the groomsmen and bridesmaids have... white roses, or tulips. Something that matches, but still keeps you guys fancier and special?"

"Yellow roses," Summer said firmly. "They won't match, but... it's important. Years ago, back when me and Ry were just friends, he sent me a bouquet of yellow roses, which mean friendship..."

"When was that? I don't remember that..." Marissa said, frowning.

"The day after he broke up with you," Summer said a little awkwardly. "He said he did it because of something I'd said to him about needing to take care of himself for once, not take care of you."

"I deserved to lose him, so don't worry, Sum," Marissa assured her. "But you're right, yellow roses are perfect. Especially since I'm hoping I'll be one of the bridesmaids and I'm friends with both of you."

"Of course you are!" Summer said. "And I think Chino's gonna ask Seth to be his best man, so it totally works that your maid of honor... like good luck for the best man and maid of honor to be dating, or something."

"Who else is on the list of bridesmaids?" Hailey asked. "We should take into account their skin tone when picking the color of their dresses."

"Coop's my only female friend, so..." Summer said. "I don't really know... maybe... would you like to be one?" she finally asked Hailey, a little shyly.

"I'd love to," Hailey replied, smiling. "What about Ryan's friend Theresa?"

"I have to talk to him about whether he wants to even invite her, considering how frustrated he was the other day when she called about Trey," Summer said.

"Well, we'll get back to that in a minute."

"Jewelry?" Marissa asked, looking around the table for suggestions.

"Simple and minimal," Kirsten suggested. "Nothing overpowering. Maybe... after lunch we'll go to Fredrick's, take a look at what they've got. But I think a simple diamond drop necklace, or..."

"Pearl drop," Summer said enthusiastically. "But not a white pearl, a black one where you can see the swirls and flaws."

"Why would you want something flawed?" Julie asked.

"Because it fits," Summer said. "Ry and I are both flawed human beings, but together we are a thing of beauty."

"Very deep, Sum," Marissa teased. "We could see about a matching clip for where your hair is clipped back," she added.

"Where's the groom to be while we do all the work?" Hailey asked with a smile, sure she was gonna hear he was at the Newport Group office working on plans for he and Summer's house.

"He said he was going to be at the house site," Summer said, beaming. "They finished the foundation day before yesterday and the frame is taking shape already. He promised me that as soon as the walls were up, I could go in and start deciding on stuff like hardwood floors or tiles, wallpaper or paint, and of course furniture and drapes and stuff."

"Is he planning on giving himself any say?" Kirsten asked.

"All he said is he'd like tile in the kitchen, and he insists on hardwood floors in his office, but that's all he said he really wants. Everything else is up to me, not that I'm not gonna drive him crazy making him look at swatches with me."

"Of course, that's your job," Kirsten teased. "You should have seen how insane I drove Sandy when we moved here from Berkeley. We had a little apartment there, nothing fancy, then we suddenly had that house and I was decorating and kept asking him what he thought of this paint color or that one... and he thought they all looked identical, which admittedly they did. Can anyone really tell the difference between Egg Shell and Navajo White?"

"I remember that Jimmy was glad I asked his opinion on everything," Julie said after a moment. "My taste was horrible then, I wanted leopard print pillows on the couch."

"Didn't he talk you down to just one?" Kirsten asked, laughing.

"You're kidding?" Marissa asked. "I never saw any leopard print pillows!"

"I still have it," Julie said. "It's tucked into a box in the attic."

"Mom, I have to see this pillow," Marissa insisted.

"I'll find it when I go home tonight," Julie promised, glad that she and Marissa's relationship had improved so much in recent years. "It's hideous. Leopard print on one side, zebra on the other."

"Oh, mom," Marissa said, making a pained face while the others laughed. "That goes beyond bad."

"I know," Julie admitted.

That evening, Summer, Kirsten, and Marissa had all returned to the Cohen house and met up with Ryan, Sandy, and Seth for dinner.

"Pass the sweet and sour chicken," Summer ordered.

"Nuh-uh," Ryan said, grabbing it out of Sandy's hand mid pass. "You already had two servings, I've barely had one. The rest is mine."

"But I want it!" Summer protested.

"And who bought it?" Ryan replied, pointing at his own chest. "After a day spent arguing with the contractor that a ballet studio is not a ridiculous thing to have in our house."

"You're really really putting one in?" Summer asked, excited.

"You only told me almost 5 years ago that you wanted one," Ryan replied. "Remember? During our original dream house discussion?"

"But I didn't think you'd remember and actually put one in!" Summer said.

"Well, I did on both counts," Ryan said, smiling. "Even if the contractor thinks I'm an idiot for insisting on it."

"Introduce him to Summer during a rage blackout," Seth suggested. "Then he'll understand why you must."

"Shut up, Cohen!" Summer said, laughing as she threw an egg roll at him. The doorbell rang and Summer jumped up. "I'll get it," she said. After a moment, the others jumped up at the sound of her angry voice. "What the hell are you doing here?!"

Everyone jumped up to see what was wrong, and when they reached the front hall, Ryan froze. "Trey?" he questioned.

"Theresa said you decided you wanted to see me..."

"Where is she?" Ryan asked, storming over to the door and looking out just in time to see her pulling out of the driveway. "I'm gonna kill her."

"I take it you didn't want to see me," Trey said.

"No, I didn't," Ryan replied. "The last two times I saw you I got in trouble, Trey! My life is like... perfect right now, and I didn't want it to all get screwed up all over again!"

"I don't wanna mess up your life, Ryan," Trey said. "I just... I wanted to see my brother, and Theresa said you invited me to stay here... but obviously she lied."

"Yeah, she did," Ryan said. He glanced back at Kirsten and Sandy, who nodded, making it clear that if he wanted Trey to stay it was okay. "You can have my room."

"Where are you gonna sleep?" Trey asked.

"Pool house?" Ryan said, shrugging.

"I guess we'll drop the 'Summer does not live in the pool house so you two can have sex' rule," Sandy joked.

"You sure?" Trey asked, directing the question at Sandy and Kirsten but looking at Ryan.

"Yeah," Ryan agreed. "You want some Chinese food? We've got plenty of everything... except the sweet and sour chicken."

"That never lasts long," Sandy said. "Ryan and Summer always eat it in 5 minutes flat."

"Oh, uh, everyone, my brother Trey. Trey... meet my family. Sandy and Kirsten Cohen, my... my other brother, Seth, and his girlfriend Marissa who you've met before..."

"Thanksgiving that first year, Ry brought you with him," Trey said, giving Marissa a half wave.

"And this is Summer," Ryan concluded, walking over to put an arm around Summer's waist. "My fiancee."

"Wait, my little brother is getting married?" Trey asked, grinning.

"Theresa didn't tell you?" Ryan asked, getting mad at his friend... make that former friend, he thought angrily... again. "I told her weeks ago, the day after I proposed."

"She didn't say a word," Trey said, sighing. "Congratulations?"

"Thanks," Ryan said.

"Let's get back to dinner," Kirsten said, gesturing for Trey to put down his bag and follow everyone else. They all gathered around the kitchen table, Trey between Ryan and Seth, and soon the same easy atmosphere that always pervaded Cohen hosted dinners returned. "You can stay as long as you want, Trey," Kirsten said once everyone was comfortable.

"Although Ryan will tell you, if you're staying here, you're required to go to all the parties," Sandy said in warning, though he was smiling. "And they usually aren't any fun. Especially since you'll have to where a suit."

"You're kidding?" Trey said, making a face.

"You better get used to it, Trey, you're wearing a suit for the wedding. Maybe a tux, depending on how fancy Summer wants it to be."

"So I am invited?" Trey asked, amused that Ryan didn't feel the need to ask.

"You don't have to come, but you can if you want," Ryan said, shrugging.

"I do believe that's Ryan-speak for please come, he'd really like it if you're there," Summer said.

"Yeah, I guess I'll come," Trey said.

"Good!" Summer said cheerfully, beaming at Ryan, who couldn't help returning the smile. "See, you ask me to marry you and everything starts looking up."

"You know, I kinda miss the Summer who used to have rage blackouts," Ryan said. "The one who once got mad at me and we got soaked standing in the middle of a rainstorm arguing."

"Well you laughed at me!" Summer protested, throwing a few grains of rice at him.

"I laughed because what you said was funny!" Ryan replied, laughing as he flicked some of the leftover sweet and sour sauce at her.

"Are they always like this?" Trey muttered to Seth.

"Pretty much," Seth said, grinning.

Marissa leaned around Seth to see Trey. "You should see them when they're really fighting, it gets scary. But thankfully they haven't done that since..."

"High school," Summer said, giving them a look for gossiping. "We're all grown up now, much more mature."

"Oh, so you didn't pout and stomp your foot earlier while my mom was trying to convince you to have a string quartet play at the wedding?" Marissa asked.

Ryan nearly spit out his soda. "Please tell me you won that argument, Summer," he pleaded.

"Don't worry, I did," Summer said. "I would never do that to my awesome husband-to-be."

"Yeah, yeah, lets see if you say that when I start wanting to elope because things are getting so extravagant and stuff..."

"If you elope, you are going to be a big trouble," Kirsten warned.

"Why, mom?" Ryan asked. "You going to cook the next dinner we come to?"

"Not even mom would be that mean," Seth said.

"I'm getting better!" Kirsten protested.

"That's what you said before you tried to make cookies last Chrismukkah," Sandy reminded her. "And poor Ryan almost needed his stomach pumped because he ate them to make you happy."

"What's Chrismukkah?" Trey asked.

"Seth created it," Ryan said. "It's a hybrid of Christmas and Hanukkah."

"8 days of presents, followed by one day of many presents," Seth said. "You can't beat it. I swear, one of these years, it's gonna sweep the nation."

"You've been saying that for 8 years, Seth," Ryan said. "I really don't think it's going to happen."

"You wait and see, Ry, someday everyone is gonna celebrate the best of all holidays!" Seth insisted.

Trey looked around the table. "Am I the only one that thinks he's insane?" he asked.

"Yup," Summer said. "The rest of us KNOW he's insane."

"Hey!" Seth protested.

"Don't worry, I still love you," Marissa said kissing his cheek.

"If you stick around you'll get use to this," Ryan said, a little hesitantly, to Trey.

"I guess I'll have to at least keep in touch, then, huh?" Trey replied.

"You could find work in Newport, and get an apartment," Ryan suggested.

"What am I gonna do around here?" Trey asked.

"You used to work construction, maybe you can get a job doing that..." Ryan said.

"Ed Mitchell needs a couple more workers," Kirsten said. "He finished up his last project, we should have him on a new one soon."

"Ed's one of the best who works for the Newport Group," Ryan said. "He's a great guy, and if he hadn't been busy working on this hotel I would have requested him for Summer and I's house."

"Maybe," Trey said.

I figured Trey would show up sooner or later but I didn't expect him to show up like this, let alone with Theresa dropping him off the way that she did. Speaking of which, it will be an interesting conversation if Ryan talks to her after this.

Anyway, you write some of the best funny family style banter in my opinion, so keep it up.
