"It's something of tradition," Christian said Ryan's first night in LA as they settled on the couch, Wilber half asleep as he sat cuddled against Christian's side. "Especially since my buddy Sean got the role."
"My friend Summer watched one episode of this," Ryan said, watching the opening scene of 'Hearts N' Scalpels'. "But her dad's a plastic surgeon, so she saw all the flaws and the next day kept ranting about how stupid the show was."
"First time we saw it, me and Sean kept up a critique through the whole thing," Christian said. "We ended up getting side jobs as the techncial advisors for the show, then Sean got a role one it."
"That him?" Ryan asked as the credit image for Sean came on.
"Yup," Christian said. "He was sleeping with Kate for a while," he added as the actress' name came on screen. "Didn't work out. Probably because he's still in love with his ex-wife, even though she has a girlfriend now."
Ryan glanced over at Christian, expecting to see a 'gotcha' expression and instead seeing a serious one. "What the hell?" he asked. "Seriously?"
"Seriously," Christian promised.
"That's just... I mean... seriously?"
Christian laughed at Ryan's reaction. "You get used to it," he said. "Actually... I should probably tell you now, so you don't find out later. You have another biological brother. Years ago, before I ever met your mother, I sort of... I had an affair with Sean's then girlfriend, Julia. She got pregnant, and for 17 years we thought Matt was Sean's, then we found out he was mine," Christian explained. "But Sean's his dad, I'm still just the 'uncle', same as I am for Sean and Julia's other two, Annie and Connor. But technically, Matt's your brother."
"Does he know about me?" Ryan asked.
"Yeah, Sean filled him in last time they talked. Matty's going through some stuff involving a fucked up marriage to my ex-fiancee, Kimber, so... he's sorting that out somewhere far from the rest of us for his own sanity. There's a kid involved, Jenna, so... it's complicated. But Sean said Matt wants to meet you at some point."
"Cool," Ryan said, turning his attention back to the screen before flinching. "Okay, I know I'm not a doctor, but I really don't think they should be doing that in an operating room," he said.
Christian laughed, nodding in agreement. "We tried, but we can't fix all the bullshit."
"Remind me never to have surgery," Ryan said as the pair on screen hurriedly straightened their clothes just before a patient was wheeled in and transferred to the bed they'd just been having sex on. "That is just not sterile!"
Christian chuckled again. "You should have seen it before Sean and I stepped in," he said.
"No, then I'd never set foot in a hospital again," Ryan said. "Ever."
