Amputee!Ryan... (The OC/ER Crossover)
Jun. 16th, 2009 11:27 pmA while back, I posted a 'Lyrically Tragic' series of ficlets all based on song lyrics. #8 was this one was the last one, i don't remember how, but I remember blood and rain, in which Ryan and Kirsten were in a car accident and Ryan's leg had to be amputated. This is set in that universe.
I didn't really intend for this to be a crossover, then I started typing and Ray Barnett (of ER, played by Shane West) was there. And I love Ray, and I'm sure he'd be willing/able to help Ryan out in this situation...
Let's just say he was there for a conference of something and checking out the facilities... or something.
Ryan hated the first prosthetic they gave him.
It was supposed to look like a real leg and foot, move like a real one, even feel like a real one if someone touched that leg. But to Ryan it still felt like some strange alien object that had been stuck on his body and they were making him keep.
He could walk on it, slowly, uncomfortably, but it just didn't feel right. He almost preferred the crutches, or even the wheelchair, to the prosthetic. They didn't rub the stump of his leg, reminding him of what was completely gone.
It wasn't until several months later that he met Ray Barnett, a visiting doctor at the clinic Ryan went to for physical therapy. Ray had noticed the uncomfortable look on Ryan's face whenever he had to move, and had taken over when the physical therapist got called away.
"How long's it been?" Ray asked conversationally, as though he wasn't in the process of removing Ryan's leg.
"About 5 months," Ryan said.
"Mind if I ask what happened?"
"Drunk driver slammed into us," Ryan said. "I was driving, my... my mom was in the passenger seat."
"Which side they hit?"
"My side," Ryan replied. "Thank god. I don't think she would have..." he trailed off, shaking his head.
Ray nodded, frowning as he removed the padding and looked at the raw skin on the ball of Ryan's leg. "You've been wearing the sock?" he asked.
"Yeah," Ryan said. "But it doesn't really help."
"Doesn't look like it," Ray agreed.
"I can't walk in the damn thing," Ryan said, not sure why he was admitting this. "It's heavy and I'm all off balance, and I've gotta go so damn slow..."
"Let me guess, you're a runner?" Ray said.
"I used to play soccer," Ryan admitted.
Ray nodded. "Anyone talk to you about the ones designed for running?"
"No, they said I have to get used to this first."
"There's some that are in between, lighter than this, but not quite made for running," Ray said. "You might like that better. It won't look real..."
"Like that does?" Ryan said, gesturing. "It looks like what it is, fake skin. And not even the good stuff like the Newpsies in this town."
"Not a fan, huh?"
"I don't know what was worse. When the women old enough to be my mother were pinching my ass and trying to get me to have sex with them in the Yacht Club locker room, or the fact that now, they don't. Kind of a drag on the old male ego. I lost my leg, and suddenly I'm not worth committing statutory with."
Ray choked back a laugh, failing miserably. "I'll have to remember that one," he said. "I'll take to your doctors, if you want, see if they'll let you try one of the other kinds. Talk to your parents, too, if you want."
"Why?" Ryan asked.
Ray sat back and tugged up his pants leg, revealing the frame of a prosthetic. "Double amputee," he said. "I was drunk and walked out in front of a garbage truck."
"That is just really stupid," Ryan said.
"Yeah, I know," Ray admitted. "What do you say, want me to talk to people?"
"Would you?" Ryan asked, hating to ask.
"Not a problem," Ray agreed. "But you oughta be good and at least look like your trying with this one," he added. "If, no matter how uncomfortable, you can get around with this, they're more likely to agree to let you try."
"Worth a shot," Ryan agreed, pulling the sock back over his stump, then securing the prosthetic over it, carefully making sure it wasn't going to slip off before he slowly got to his feet.
"Come on, just give it a shot walking across, relying mostly on the leg, not on the rails," Ray said, encouraging Ryan.
The End
I just wanted to post SOMETHING, since it's been a while since I posted fic...

Date: 2009-06-17 01:03 pm (UTC)I guess I failed at conveying the fact that Ryan was going with the simple version instead of trying to explain his life story.
