So... I sorta... got this idea...
Those on my Flist who are Stargate fans almsot certainly know that there's a 3rd SG series planned, titled (at least for now) "Stargate: Universe" (lamest title ever... lol). The comments about making it more "youth friendly" vaguely concerns me... but I'll still watch because other aspects of the plot interest me...
ANYWAY...
I kinda wanna write a fanfic based on the basic plot, but with characters of my own creation. Maybe have one or two minor characters from SGA or Atlantis be more important characters in it (like how Lorne was mostly a throw away character on SG-1, but is now a more important character on Atlantis), but mostly originally characters.
I'm sorely tempted to do this.
I've actually sorta started figuring out who my characters would be and the overall story arc of the first season... lol
So, the story is suppose to be that a team is sent to this Ancient ship that's been found in order to do recon. But thanks to an accident, they wind up stranded on the ship, cut off from Earth, and in an unexplored region of space.
My version would have it be that 2 gate teams were sent along with some scientists. One is a seasoned team that knows what they're doing and have been doing it for years. One is a group of new to the SGC recruits who are still get used to the whole 'aliens are real and half of them want to kill us' thing. Then there's a dozen or so scientists who specialize in Ancient technology. They have supplies for maybe a week, but they plan to be back on Earth and replaced with another group by them.
Unbeknongst to them, as soon as they 'Gate onto the ship, the Stargate locks down and a countdown activates. Several members of the group complain of being 'creeped out' by the empty ship, but it's shoved off as being just because the ship is empty. While exploring, one group stumbles across several mostly mummified bodies, all of whom show signs of violent deaths. This causes the whole group to gather in what seems to have been the messhall, wanting to go over the protocal for keeping safe. Again, several people complain of being creeped out, but once again it's dismissed.
While sleeping that night, everyone camped out on the floor of the mess hall, one of the young soldiers gets up and begins sleepwalking down the halls. An older soldier follows him, noticing that the younger one is non-responsive and not wanting to risk waking him. The sleepwalking soldier heads confidently towards what they had thought was the rear of the vessel, and unlocks a door by speaking Ancient. On the other side of the door, is the bridge, and as soon as both the younger and older soldiers step onto the bridge, the younger one collapses, unconscious.
The older soldier calls for the others, waking them and bringing them to the bridge. The medic takes a look at the younger soldier, and using a small handheld scanner to tell her that his brainwaves indicate he's fine, jsut unconscious. One of the scientists notices that there seems to be a countdown on the screens, and the group becomes concerned and head back towards the gate, only to find it won't activate.
The young soldier wakes, speaking in Ancient, and a scientists translates that the young soldier is telling them that they are the new crew, who the ship has waited a very long time for. Now they can complete her mission, hopefully with more success than the last crew did. The highest ranking soldier demands to know what happened to the last crew, the the young soldier says they failed and died, just like all the others. Just as quickly, the young soldier collapses again, and this time the medic says that his brainwaves were completely changed during the episode, and now they are still slightly altered, but slowly returning to normal.
Returning to the bridge, the translater tells them that they think the ship's engines are set to engage when the countdown hits zero, and there's not enough time to stop it, even if they knew where the engine room was. Making matters worse, she thinks they need a pilot to survive the jump. The young soldier wakess this time himself, and says he remembers the two episodes, but couldn't control his own actions. As the engines power up, he strides to the pilots seat, shoving past the one trained pilot who was heading that way, and sits down, immediately sinking into the chair and placing his hands on the controls. He insists that he doesn't know how, but he knows what to do. Before they can argue, the ship jumps, and most of them are tossed to the floor.
When they come out into normal space, the young soldier apologizes, but says he couldn't help the urge to sit down. The ranking soldier asks that he warn them if he gets anymore urges,a dn the young soldier apologizes again. While gathering at the bakc of the bridge to eat their meals as they try to work out what consoles do what, some fot he scientists suggest that the ship has an AI and it linked with the young soldier in order to do try and get things done that it couldn't. It needed a living pilot to fly them through the jump, so it made sure they found the bridge. It needed them to stay, so it explained they were the crew. And when a pilot without the ATA Gene attempted to pilot her, she made sure the soldier who had the gene took the seat instead. Noe one's particularly happy about any of this, least of all the young soldier who doesn't like knowing there's something in his head that can, and has, controlled his actions.
But they're trapped, no way home (yet), and only eachother to count on, so they'll make due.
That would be the end of my pilot episode, the group of 20 or so people basically making the decision to do what they can and find a way home, but learn along the way.
In the 2nd ep, they discover food stores on board, enough edible that they can survive a few years. But later in the season the food stores become contaminated with something and the food situation becomes desperate, forcing them to make contact with alien peoples.
There would be serious eps (ie:the food becoming contaminated, enemy aliens boarding the ship), humorous eps (ie: a recon team goes camping and have all sorts of minor disasters befall them, leading one to return tot eh ship in their underwear), and eps that are both (ie: Several male soldiers are kidnapped and put in a female ruler's harem and the female crew members have to rescue them)
I'm considering having Laura Cadman be one of the experienced soldiers. Maybe after Beckett died on SGA, she transferred back to Earth and wound up with this gig...
Anyway... yeah...
