Title: Prank

Fandom: The OC.
Rating: R
Warnings: Violence. Character Death. Intense.
Summary: "It was just a stupid prank, you know? No one was suppose to get hurt."
Notes: You guys may kill me if I don't warn, so... yeah, I'm warning. Ryan dies in this one. It's intense, and dark, and heartbreaking. If you don't wanna read it, then don't. I don't mind if people read and say they hate when Ryan dies, but please, I beg you, if you feel the need to comment, find something else to say as well. Because you are warned up front that this is not a happy ending, this is a heartbreaking ending where Ryan DIES. It is not quick and painless, it is terrifying and somewhat drawn out. It takes place early to mid Season 1, so Ryan is 15.

It mixes a news story talking about the events several years later (which is shown in bold) with flashbacks of what actually happened (shown in italics). It's experimental, and I kinda like how it turned out, even if it broke my heart writing it an I was crying openly by the end.

Again, Ryan dies in this story, so don't read if you don't want to read Ryan dying.

Prank

"On November 17th, 2004, 15 year-old Ryan Atwood disappeared while walking home from soccer practice. 4 days later, he was found face down in a shallow grave, tape covering his mouth, eyes, and binding his arms behind his back. While many details of what happened during those four days remains a mystery, this much is known. 4 young lives were destroyed, a family was torn apart, and a life was lost, all because of what Ryan's abductors called a 'prank' that got out of hand. Tonight we'll recount the story that Ryan's abductor's told police, as well as what forensic specialists pieced together about Ryan's final hours."

Once he and Luke had somewhat called a truce, agreeing to keep away from each other rather than fight, Ryan had thought things would get easier. He and Luke actually made a good team on the soccer field, and Luke had grudgingly complimented him on a goal he'd made during the last game. That was why he hadn't been expecting three of the guys from the team to corner him halfway between Harbor and the Cohens, hitting and kicking him until he felt at least one rib crack, then tossing him into the trunk of one of their cars.

"This is gonna be good," one of the boys said as the trunk slammed shut.

"It was just a stupid prank, you know? No one was suppose to get hurt," Chip Hennings says as he sits behind the glass at the State Penitentiary where he, along with the two other boys charged with Ryan's kidnapping and murder, await trial. "We wanted to show him that he didn't belong here and we weren't gonna accept him just because Luke had decided to put up with him."

"Those guys should have to go through what they did to Chino," Luke Ward counters from his family's living room. "Me and Ryan... we liked the same girl, so we didn't exactly get along, but... he was a good guy, and he didn't deserve what those ass holes did to him, you know? No one deserves that."

"We don't blame Luke," Kirsten Cohen, Ryan's foster mother, tells us from her seat on Ryan's old bed. "When he found out what they'd done, he went to the police immediately. He told them, and us, everything he knew, and... how could we blame him when he looked like it was his best friend who'd been killed?"

"We fucked up." Chris Denton says from his jail cell. "We fucked up and we killed him. I mean... we all did it, we all sat around and laughed while he was... he was just trying to breath and we kept kicking him in the ribs. We deserve what we get, you know? That's why I didn't take a deal, even when I agreed to testify against Chip and Dave. Atwood didn't deserve any of it, and we'd deserve to rot even if he hadn't died."

Ryan was ready when they opened the trunk, and he lashed out with feet and fists, but there were three of them and they had him on the ground within seconds, even though he was pretty sure at least one of them had a shiner, and the other had taken a kick to the balls. "Let me go you fuckers!" he yelled, only to gasp out in pain as one of them sat on his back and his broken rib pressed into his lung. "Get off!"

"Shut your mouth, trash," one of them said, slapping the end of a roll of tape over Ryan's mouth and winding it around his head a few times before tearing it off. The weight shifted off his back, before he could catch his breath, they grabbed his arms and yanked them back, winding tape around them and tugging at Ryan's ribs again before the weight returned and he felt someone's breath against his ear. "We're gonna fuck you up, Atwood." Then another piece of tape was put over his eyes, blocking everything out.

"We didn't mean to hurt him," Dave Ellison insists. "We just wanted to scare him into quitting the team. Trash like him didn't belong in the locker room with us."

"So you broke his ribs then sat on his back?"

"We didn't think he was hurt."

Ryan couldn't breath right, but he could hear the sons of bitches laughing and talking about how much Luke was gonna laugh when they told him. Somehow, as much as he disliked the other boy, Ryan doubted Luke would think this was funny. And he knew the Cohens wouldn't, not if they cared half as much as they seemed to. God, he wanted to be home right now, making fun of Kirsten's yogalattes and listening to Seth go on about comics and Summer and video games.

He kept trying to shift, trying to relieve the pain in his chest, but anytime he moved too much, one of the boys would come over and kick him back onto his stomach, then they'd all laugh again. He tried to yell through the tape, tell them something was wrong, but they just laughed harder. Fucking ass holes. When this was over, he was calling Arturo and asking the old gang to come teach these Newport pricks what it means to get their asses kicked.

"We're pretty sure they didn't intend to kill him," Detective Malcolm Overman, lead investigator on the case, says from the site where Ryan's body was found. "And we're pretty sure they didn't intend to bury him until they realized he was dead. They panicked and buried him to keep themselves from getting caught. And then they went and talked about it in front of people, and Luke Ward, the guy they keep saying they did it for, came to us and told us what he knew." Overman turns away from the camera and scrubs a hand over his face. "He was a fucking kid, you know? 15."

"You sound like you took this one personally?"

"He survived a childhood of getting beaten, and when he finally gets a good home with a family that loves him... he gets killed by some of the rich kids who's parents were so worried he'd hurt. This kid could have tested out of high school at 15, he had already stepped up and saved two lives in his first few weeks in Newport, and he was killed by a couple kids who thought he deserved being beaten and tormented. He was 15, just a baby."

Ryan had managed to keep from showing his fear until they shoved him into the shallow hole in the ground. Laying on his stomach, his arms pulled behind his back and his mouth covered, he felt like he couldn't pull in enough air and started screaming behind the tape, panicking as he heard the boys standing around him start to laugh. There were tears openly streaming down his face, loosening the tape that covered his eyes until it fell away, as he felt the first shovelful of dirt hit his back and he stopped screaming as the pain in his chest got to be too much and things began to get dim, the laughter fading slightly. The last thing he heard before everything went black and silent was Chip's voice.

"Guys? Something's wrong... Atwood? Wake up, man! Shit... oh shit... Atwood?"

The End

This wasn't my original intent for the pic, I was just gonna have him kidnapped. Then I started writing and it came out int he voice of the reporter. And the reported said that Ryan was dead. And the rest sort of came out quickly. I even faltered a bit about posting it, but... even though it hurts, I sort of like the final effect of this piece.

Please forgive me for this one, but... at least it means that I'm less likely to kill Ryan in 'Gone' (the one where he was sent to a school for troubled kids and disappeared without a trace), which I was actually vaguely considering at one point. And yes, that DOES mean I plan on going back to 'Gone' and writing more of it, and probably soon...
