Title: Heavily Broken (Epilogue)
Author: Mara
Rating: R
Warnings: Sex, mentions of rape, violence. Language.
Summary: Ryan didn't call Sandy after Dawn kicked him out, but he still finds his way to the Cohen family.
Notes: This is gonna be the end of this, at least for now. I actually would have ended it with Chapter 59, because I liked the final handful of lines between Ryan and Sandy, but it was missing some sort of closure for Ryan and Summer, which this epilogue provides. I'm not closing the book on this universe, especially considering my great love for Ryan/Summer (despite my recent lack of writing them... lol), but this seemed like a good place to end things, at least for now. I'm almost positive I'll write a sequel at some point... just not for a while...

If there were two people Ryan would have expected to dislike each other, it was Alex and Holly. Instead the two girls got along, and Alex planted herself on a bar stool next to Ryan while Holly danced at the concert.
"Hey, if nothing else, she's eye candy for both of us," Alex joked, glancing sideways at Ryan, who chuckled. "How's everything going?"
"Better," Ryan told her, nodding. "Less pressure lately."
"Feeling okay?"
"Yeah, I am," Ryan said. "I think I may be seeing that whole proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. I can do this."
"Damn straight," Alex said. "Because I am not friends with pathetic people."
Ryan chuckled, grinning at her, then feeling all the momentary happiness fade away as he spotted Summer and Marissa coming in. A moment after he saw them, Summer spotted him.
"That the ex-girlfriend?" Alex asked.
"Yeah," Ryan said.
"Say the word and her ass is on the sidewalk," Alex offered.
"Thanks," Ryan said. "But suddenly I don't feel much like hanging out."
Alex nodded. "I'll keep an eye on Holly," she said.
"Don't take advantage," Ryan said as he stood. Then, impulsively, he leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Thanks, Alex. I needed a little fun for once."
"Anytime," Alex said. "Maybe I'll even book Journey for you," she added mockingly.
"I'm never gonna live that down, am I?"
"Nope," Alex said, shaking her head.
Ryan chuckled again and headed for the door, passing the girls on the way.
"Ryan? Hey!" Marissa said. "How are you doing?"
"I'm doing okay," Ryan said. "There's good days and days when I wanna hit something, but... I'm okay."
"Kaitlin's desperate top find a way to get you to dance with her at Caleb and my mom's wedding," Marissa said. "I can find a way to let her down easy if you want."
"Tell her I'll save one for her," Ryan replied before he left, never even looking at Summer.
"Chino, wait!" Summer yelled, following him out.
"Why should I?" Ryan replied. "You didn't wait for me to explain before you jumped to conclusions."
"And you moved on quick with that freak I saw you with in there!" Summer snapped.
"Alex is a friend," Ryan replied. "She has HIV, so she knows what it's like, she knows that I needed a distraction. She knows I needed to relax for once and be 16 instead of taking care of everyone else in the world first. I'm sorry you're offended that I made a new friend," he added before turning and walking away, leaving her standing in the middle of the parking lot.

Late that night, Ryan was sitting by the pool, smoking, when he heard tentative footsteps and looked up to see it was Summer. "I really..." he began.
"I'm sorry," Summer said. "I... was stupid, and..."
"I can't deal with any unnecessary drama right now, Summer," Ryan interrupted. "I can't deal with someone I could have loved thinking I'd cheat on them."
"Ryan, I'm sorry, I didn't think..."
"That doesn't make anything better," Ryan said.
"I love you," Summer whispered.
Ryan sighed. "It's funny. It's always the ones that say that who manage to make it all hurt the most."
"Ryan... can't you just forgive me?"
Ryan sighed again and leaned back to look up at the stars, not answering right away. Finally, he shook his head. "No, Summer. I don't think I can. Not right now."
Her whole face crumbled at his words. "I..."
"I'm not that good at holding a grudge," Ryan continued. "In fact, I kinda suck at it. So just... give me some time. Give me a chance to process everything, and then... we'll see what happens."
Summer nodded slowly. "I'm here if you need me," she said.
"Same here," Ryan said.
"I should go..." Summer began. "So..."
"I guess I'll see you around," Ryan finished for her.
"Yeah..."
"Hey, Summer?"
"Yeah?"
"I don't hate you, not even close," Ryan said. "And... I'll save a dance at the wedding for you, too."
Summer smiled. "Looking forward to it."
Ryan gave her a smile smile before looking back up at the stars. Or at least pretending to until she turned away and started around the side of the house. Right before she disappeared, she glanced back over her shoulder and caught his eye, smiling softly and lifting a hand in farewell, a move that Ryan echoed.
This time, out of all the waves good bye he'd dealt with, it didn't seem so final.
The End
::sigh:: Goodbye is kinda hard to say... lol...

Date: 2009-07-22 08:37 pm (UTC)I was bored at work, so I reread Heavily Broken. Does that make me seem like a sad stalker girl? (Please don't tell me if it does)
I'm sure I've told you this before, but I really love this. Fantastic ending - heartbreakingly hopeful.
