Jess Meets The Nana

"Why is it the first relative I have to meet is your grandma?" Jess asked. "Little old ladies do not like me."

"The Nana is not some frail little old lady," Ryan said as he lead the way up the steps to Sophie's front door. "She's scary," he added as he rang the bell.

"You expect me to be scared of some old lady?" Jess asked.

The door swung open, and Ryan was immediately engulfed in a hug by Sophie. "It's about time you come see me," she scolded. Then she looked past his shoulder to Jess, eyeing him. "So your the boy who thinks he's good enough to date my grandson?"

Ryan grinned and mouthed 'scary' at Jess, who tried to offer a friendly smile.

~~~
"What do your parents do?" Sophie asked as she sat in a chair across from the couch Ryan and Jess were seated on.
"My father runs a hot dog stand in Venice Beach, California, and my mother... she sells handmade jewelry on the Renassaince Fair circuit," Jess said awkwardly. "My Uncle owns a diner though, in Connecticut, and his girlfriend owns an inn," he added quickly, wanting to smack himself for worrying this much about what she thought of him.
Sophie made a 'hm' sound. "And what do you do? Are you a full time student?"
"I work in a bookstore," Jess said.
"He's part owner," Ryan said quickly. "Used the proceeds from the book he published to get the place up and running."
"You published a book, interesting," Sophie said, still regarding them stone faced. In the other room, the coffee maker beeped and Sophie stood. "I'll be right back," she said.
"She's terrifying!" Jess said in a low voice.
"She's not usually this bad," Ryan replied. "I don't know what is up, but..."
"She hates me," Jess said.
"No, of course she..."
"Did you see the look on her face when I told her what my parents do?"
"She's not the kind of person who..."
"I have never been the guy anyone, male or female, takes home to meet the family, Ryan..."
"And I am?" Ryan replied, trying not to laugh. "Jess, just calm down, okay. You're freaking out, and it's really weird to see you freaking out."
"She hates me!" Jess said again before trying to force a smile as Sophie returned with the coffee. "Thank you, Mrs. Cohen," he said as he accepted a mug of it.
~~~

"Why are you being like this?" Ryan asked later, when Jess had gone to the bathroom for a minute. "You're not this harsh to Kirsten, and you claim to hate her."

"You don't need anymore hurt than you've already had," Sophie said.

"Then why are you trying to mess up something good?" Ryan asked. "There's a couple great things about Jess, and one of them is that he... he likes me, Nana."

"Lots of people..."

"Yeah, lots of people liked me for what I could do for them. Marissa liked being saved, Lindsay liked having someone to talk Physics with, Sadie liked having someone who was good in bed. They never... they looked at me and saw who they wanted me to be. Jess looks at me and sees who I am. And he likes who I am. No one else has ever looked at me like I was good enough all on my own without being something they needed."

"I don't wanna see you get hurt again."

"Life is hurt," Ryan replied, shrugging. "If you convince him that he's going to be hated by everyone else I love, I'm gonna lose him and that's gonna hurt like hell."

"He is cute," Sophie acknowledged.

Ryan smiled. "Yeah. And smart, and sarcastic, and funny. He's a good guy. And if you'd just stop treating him like the enemy you'll see that."

"I'll try," Sophie said.

"That's all I ask," Ryan replied, kissing her cheek.

~~~
"You know, last time it was my girlfriend's mother who thought I wasn't anywhere near good enough," Jess said later, when Ryan had already crashed in one of the guest rooms they were staying in due to the snow storm outside. "I don't think she ever stopped hating me."
"I don't hate you, I just don't want Ryan getting his heart trampled on again," Sophie said. "Did he tell you about..."
"Marissa and the emotional cheating? Theresa and the fake miscarriage? Lindsay and Sadie both leaving him with like no warning? Marissa dying in his arms? Yeah, we've talked," Jess said. "My romantic history isn't any less nightmarish. It doesn't mean I don't care about him."
"Do you love my grandson?"
"Anyone can say that word, it doesn't mean a damn thing," Jess said. "I like Ryan, he's... great. I think we stand as good a chance as any other couple. I want it to last. And I definitely don't wanna hurt him."
"Do you love him?" Sophie repeated.
Jess couldn't meet her eyes as he nodded sharply, just one quick bob of his chin. "Yeah," he whispered. "Okay? Yeah, I do. But saying it just gets you hurt, so I don't say it."
Sophie snorted. "As long as you know he's the same way about those words."
"Yeah, I know," Jess replied, smiling. "So... truce?"
"You hurt him, I'll hunt you down," Sophie said, though she was smiling. "But anyone who'll stand up to me like that just might be worthy of my grandson."
"And my uncle used to say my attitude would never get me anywhere," Jess replied.
~~~

"She likes me," Jess said as he slid into bed beside Ryan.

"She won't if you try anything, Mariano," Ryan said with a sleepy smile.

Jess chuckled. "Yeah, I'm still scared enough not to take the risk, no matter how tempting," he said. "But I talked to her, she said she just doesn't want you getting hurt again, and apparently me confronting her proves I'm worthy of dating you."

"Nana still doesn't like Kirsten because she won't just tell her to shut the fuck up in their house," Ryan agreed, still half asleep. "So you've got one up on her."

"Cool," Jess agreed, nodding. "You know how I feel about you, right?"

"Huh?"

"This isn't even remotely a casual, temporary, thing to me."

Ryan lifted his head. "Good to know, cause it's not casual or temporary to me, either."

"So you're not just 'going through a phase'?" Jess mocked, quoting a girl Ryan had classes with.

"No, I'm not," Ryan said. He leaned over to kiss Jess briefly. "This may not last forever, but... I kinda hope it does."

"Me, too," Jess agreed, threading his fingers through Ryan's. "Especially since your sweet old granny said she'd hunt me down if I hurt you."

Ryan snickered, then burst out laughing. "She would, too," he said.

"Oh shut up," Jess muttered, though he was smiling.

"I don't want any funny business under my roof, boys," Sophie called through the door. "Ryan, you know the rules I have for Seth and Summer, they're the same for you."

"I know, Nana," Ryan called back. "We're just talking."

The door opened a bit and Sophie stuck her head in, waiting for Ryan to reach over and turn on the light. "Door open," she said.

"Door open," Ryan agreed.

"Door open," Jess echoed.

Sophie nodded and left them again, though with the door more than half open.

"Well, that killed any possible mood," Jess said, sitting up.

"I'd be worried if it didn't," Ryan replied.

Jess looked ready to smack Ryan for that, then just leaned down to kiss him again. "I'm gonna go to my assigned room before I get us in trouble," he said.

"Good idea," Ryan agreed. "See you in the morning."

"Yeah, in the morning," Jess said, getting up and heading for the door. "I'm glad you asked me to come meet her," he said.

"So am I," Ryan said. "If she doesn't scare you off, you might just survive if, hopefully when, you meet the rest of my family."

"Yeah, well, just wait until I force you to deal with the insanity of Stars Hollow," Jess countered before leaving, closing the door most of the way so the light from the hall wouldn't keep Ryan awake.

The End

I will write about Jess meeting the rest of the Cohens (Somehow, I picture Sophie Rose totally adoring him immediately simply because he makes her big brother Ryan smile... lol)

Yay! So cute, I'm really glad you're going to be writing more of them. And I can definitely see Sophie taking a quick liking to Jess. Some how, I imagine that Jess would be uncomfortable, but still pleasantly surprised with that.

Loved the attitude of the Nana, she is so protective of Ryan, it's really cute.
I'm not really in the slash thing, kinda weird reading Gay!Ryan, but I like it so far.
