Or something... lol... this week has been... yikes...
A quick description:
We have 4 storefronts (Subway, Taco John's, Squeeze, and Goodtimes) and then I do the Hot Stuff Pizzas and Breadsticks in the back prep area. In back with the prep area are the walk-in freezer and walk-in fridge. There are also 2 small fridges under the counters in the prep area, one for Hot Stuff and one for Subway.
Monday:
One of the Subway guys, Brian, turned on this water spigot in Taco John's to fill a pitcher. That's fine. The problem is, he didn't turn the spigot OFF again. So there was a HUGE puddle of water, an inch or so deep in on low spot, covering the floor in back. Now, the correct thing to do, the thing that would have kept people from being pissed, is for him to have mopped it up. He didn't. He took the mop and leaned it against the wall in the midle of the puddle, then left. He was available until like 10am that morning and it wouldn't have take more than 10 minutes to mop it up.
Now, a bit after I saw the flooding, I realized that the stuff that I NEED defrosted on monday mornings (the pizza doughballs, the breadsticks, and two of the ingredients for the pizzas) hadn't been pulled like they shoud have been Sunday Afternoon/evening. These things are in nice easy to find containers, all prepped, sitting in the freezer. All the Sunday aftrnoon/evening prepper needs to do is pull them from the freezer and put them in the Hot Stuff fridge. Easy right? Apparently not. Brian was suppose to do it and he didn't do it. AGAIN. One of the other people, Tina, had acually called him Sunday to make sure he didn't need any extra help, she offer3ed to come in! And he said it was under control. Except obviously not.
And right around then we discovered that the temperature in the walk-in fidge? Was about 60 degrees. It's suppose to be like just about freezing, somewhere between 33 and 40 (40 is considered entering the 'spoilage' range and you're starting to get screwed...) All of Goodtime's bacon had gone bad. About 90% of Subway's various meats had gone bad. All of the Custard mix. Thankfuly, Taco John's keeps it's meats frozen until they cook it in the boiler, Goodtime'shad a box ortwo of burgers in their minifridge, and Subway had a small amount of some meats tucked into their two minifridges (one in the store, one in the prep area). But still, it was VERY bad. There's very lttle chance it wasn't starting to fail Sunday afternoon/evening. When Brian was there and should have down a temp check and noticed. Thereis NO WAY it wasn't REALLY bad Monday morning, when Brian was there and should have done a temp check and noticed. Hell, just walking in there he should have known!
And we had a minor disaster in the form of the drain for one of the sinks in the back area being clogged and overflowing, which flooded the prep area.
The problem with any standing water? The union food court is RIGHT over a Computer Lab, and here's been problems with the water leaking into the lab before.
Oh! And Brian? Is an ass. He quit on us. Initially gave 2weeks ntice, but after being called into the office to be lightly reprimanded for leaving the water at TJ's and for the fridge, he said "As soon as lunch rush is ovr, I'm done. I'm not coming back." and bailed.
Anyway, that was Monday. First day of hell. Now for...
Tuesday:
Not as bad of a day, but still...
The boiler' spigot accidentally turned on, so the prep area floor got wet. Not flooded, but very slipery for a bit. Later, the boiler started overboiling, splashing boilng hot water all over the floor.
Near the end of the day (for me anyway, it startd at about 12:30 or so) the power went off... then about 10 or 15 minutes later it came back on... onlyto go off again maybe 1 and 1/2 minutes later... off for 10 or 15... on for maybe a minute... off for 10 or 15... finally back on for good, but it did flicker one more time. The main reason this becomes a disaster? the repeated power outages caused the air vent/fan to just turn itself off. So the prep area started heating up. It reached over 90 degrees at one point. That's hotter than it was outside. We didn't know that was the problem, though, so we were all a step above passing out all afternoon.
More people quit, though I don't know who. Mostly Subway people, I think, because Tina toldme that during the power outage, they had a line stretching to CJ's (which is a distance of somewhere close to the same as a city block) at Subway, and only 2 people to serve them all.
Today:
Air vent/fan was still off and we didn't figur out why until like 11am, 3 hours after I got there. I spent all that time very close to passing out.
I discovered, upon arriving at work, that due to being flustered over the power proberms and heat, I hadn't pulled soaps for Squeeze yesterday, so I didn't have any to serve even though it was a cold day so people might want soup. Thankfully, one of the manager's, Tammy, found out that they had some mostly defrosted soups over at CJ's (little conveniece store inside the union), and got me two, so I was able to have soup afterall. Except I think I sold one bowl of soup the whole fricking day. Irony, huh?
And finally, my minifridge had some temperature problems today, getting up to 42 degrees (spoilage range!) for a brief time before going back own into the safe range of around 35.
So out of the whole week, today was the least nightmarish...lol...
On another note... poor Ben, the Taco John's manager...
On Monday, he hit his head on th underside of the microwave door at Subway. Had big ass knot on his head, and had to leave early because he was so fuzzy headed.
On Tuesday, he burne his hand on a piece of hot metal that had cooking oil on it. Lots of pai there.
Today, he managed to scape skin off one of his fingers on the underside of a counter, and he was bleedig a lot. Even after he wrapped it in a LT of medical tape and gauze, it was still bleeding through it.
Poor guy... But Ben is my hero because he's the one who figurd out the air vent/fan as off and turned it on, which got the temperaure to FINALLY go down in the prep area... lol...
Anyway, since each day has bee slightly better than the last, I have high hopes for tomorrow and Friday! lol
