Oct. 22nd, 2008 08:06 pmSo, late week (exactly, actually, it was the 15th! lol) I order like 8 books from Amazon. Or rather THROUGH Amazon since I got them used from various vendors... I've gotten 6 of them already, and all are in GREAT condition.
2 are reference books, the other books are fiction. Below are the books I bought, along with who I bought them from because I approve of these vendors highly because even the one in the 'worst' condition is in really good condition! lol I've marked the ones I've gotten so far, so I can't really vouch for the condition of the two I haven't gotten yet.
If you do an amazon search, you can find the books pretty easily, but if anyone wants a direct link to the Amazon page/pages, let me know.
Title: Careers For Your Characters
Type: Reference
Seller: bookmans_exchange (Arrived Monday) It's in amazing condition, looks brandnew except for a few spots that look like newspaper print of something rubbed off on the bottom corner.
Description: This book gives some great info on variuous jobs, from the basic job description, to related jobs, to what people in the job tend to wear. Chapter 2 is about jobs in Architecture, there's a chapter about Law Enforcement (including Police officers, FBI, CIA, etc...), Medical Sciences (Doctors, Nurses, EMTs, etc...), and Chapter 16 is 'Sex Industry' (Prostitutes, strippers, phone sex, and Porn Stars, oh my!) lol... I haven't read the whole thing yet, but the parts I have looked at are really informative and interesting. In addition, each chapter debunks myths about the professions.
Title: Body Trauma: A Writer's Guide To Wounds And Injuries
Type: Reference
Seller: brightlight_books (Arrived Tuesday) There's a tiny bit of wear at the corners, but opther than that, really good condition.
Description: As the title suggestions, this book is about injuries and bodily damage. The first chapter is about terminology and other background info. Then there's 3 chapters about treament in the field, in a trauma center, and in the operating room. Then come the chapters about different types of injuries (Head trauma, Neck and Spinal Cord, Chest, Abdominal, Extremities), then a sectionon more 'unique' injuries (various kinds of bites, impalements, Traumatic amputations and repattachments, Burns and frostbite) and even a chapter about sexual assault. Again, haven't read the whole thing yet, but it's pretty clearly a great source of info, and I intend to use it to my great advantage for fics.
Title: Target (By Kathleen Jeffrie Johnson)
Type: Fiction
Seller: luke6146 (Arrived Tuesday) Residue from a sticker on the book jacket, but other than that, it's perfect, like brand new.
Description: I requested this one from the library once after hearing about it, and I loved it. It's about this teenage boy, a 'tough' guy, football player, who has basically become traumatically mute following being jumped and raped by a group of men he didn't even know. His family has moved to a new town, and he is going to public school, but he's having a lot of trouble seeing deal with what happened, wondering if he was picked for a reason, if it means something about him. He's also developed something of an eating disorder, not able to bring himself to eat much of anything, although it's not delibrate on his part. It's sad, and heartbreaking, and so good.
Title: Med Center: Blizzard and Med Center: Fire by Diane Hoh
Type: Fiction
Seller: piedmontbooks (Arrived Monday) and ladym33 (arrived Tuesday) Blizzard, which arrived Monday, has some wear alone the edges and the corners, but nothing worse than the other books in the series that I already owned, and Fire, which arrived Tuesday has some very slight yellowing of the pages, but again, nothing major.
Description: I alreayd owned 4 of the 6 books in this GREAT series. It's about high school volunteering at the local hospital, and their friends and families. The characters are great because they're flawed. Kate is probably the smartest character, but she can be judgemental. Will is sweet, but he jumps to conclusions about his girlfriend's family, assuming her parents won't like him because he's not only poor, but black, while they are wealthy and white. Abby is a perky and bubbly cheerleader who's quick to anger and dating Sid, a paraplegic who is kind of a jerk sometimes, but has a good heart. They live in a town that keeps being besieged by disasters. First was a virus, then a flood, then a fire, then an explosion, then the blizzard, and finally poisoned medication.
Title: Boot Camp by Todd Strasser
Type: Fiction
Seller: housing_works_bookstore (Arrived Wedsday) PERFECT condition, leterally like brand new. And inside was a 30% off coupon for any purchase made in person at their store in New York. Anyone on my flist live in New York City and want me to send them the coupon? Portions of their proceeds go to helop the homeless New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDs, which is such a bonus.
Description: I haven't read it yet, but the description sounded SO good! Basically, it's about this kid, Garrett, who is 'kidnapped' in the middle of the night and taken to a 'disciplinary boot camp for troubled teens', something arranged by his parents. The sad thing is, places like this DO exist, and kdis have died at them. I can't wait to read this one.
Title: Trigger by Susan Vaught
Type: Fiction
Seller: chrispdxbookstore (Hasn't Arrived Yet)
Description: Haven't read it yet, but I've read ABOUT it. It's about a teenage boy who has just come home after spending like a year in a rehab hospital recovering from shooting himself in the head. He doesn't really remember WHY he shot himself, and the story is suppose to be part mystery as he pieces together his fragmented memories to try and figure it out.
Title: The Radiant Seas by Catherine Asaro
Type: Science Fiction
Seller: bookbuyersonline1 (Hasn't Arrived Yet)
Description: I've read this one many times before when I checked it out from the library, and I love it. It's actually part of a series, but it works pretty well as a stand alone. Soz and Jaibrol are the heirs to two warring intergalactic royal dynasties who met and fell in love in a previous book. In this one, they have faked their deaths and set up a life for themselves on an uninhabited planet, where they raise a family until Jaibrol is kidnapped. There's some kinda graphic torture scenes, and rape is talked about a bit. I LOVE this book muchly.
