"So, the Wraith are attacking from all angles, and our plan to remote pilot one of the 'Jumpers went all to hell, so I had to fly it up myself with the nuke in back," John said to his eager audience.
"How'd you survive?" one of the female patients asked, awestruck.
"At the last minute, the Daedalus arrived and they beamed me out of the 'Jumper right before it exploded," John said.
"Wow," they all chorused.
"Okay, story time's over!" one of the orderlies said, shooing the group away. "It's lunch time!"
They formed a line to head for the mess... cafeteria. John had to keep reminding himself to call it that. He wasn't military anymore, he was civilian. And no one believed him about the Stargate, so he was a civilian in a mental hospital. Fun. But hey, he could talk all he wanted about Atlantis since he was 'crazy', so it wasn't so bad.
When they got there, he imediately took a seat next to the 19 year-old kid he'd somewhat made friends with. From what John could tell, Ryan had seen the Go'auld at some point during their many little incursions onto the Earth, and his story of men with glowing eyes had landed him in here with infrequent visits from his family.
So, John had decided it was his job to watch out for Ryan and keep the other patients and the staff from messing with him, at least as much as he could.
"You hear anything new?" John asked Ryan quietly.
"Some people tried to get in to see you, but they were turned away," Ryan reported. The teenage never caused trouble, and because he was good at being quiet and making himself unnoticeable, the staff tended to forget he was there and say things they wouldn't otherwise. Even better, because of his good behavior, Ryan had been allowed to work in the office doing little chores, and that allowed him to overhear useful tidbits sometimes that helped John keep up the awestruck crowd because he 'predicted' things.
"Did you see them?"
"One was a woman with dark hair, she introduced herself as a doctor, and tried to negotiate. Then there was a guy with a scottish accent, also a doctor, a big guy who looked like he wanted to just rampage through the place, a woman who looked like she did, too, but she had a hand on the big guy's shoulder like she was trying to keep him calm. And there was a guy that they called 'Lorne'..."
John smiled. "Sounds like my team from Atlantis," he said. "Somehow, I doubt it's just a friendly visit, something big is up."
"I heard the first woman say something about calling 'The General' and getting him to come down, but he wouldn't be happy," Ryan added.
"Gotta mean General O'Neill, which means something really big."
Suddenly, the world began to violently shake around them. John grabbed Ryan and pulled the teenager under the table with him, hoping it would shield them from any falling debris.
There were screams all around them, and the earthquake continued longer than usual, along with accompanying screams, making John doubt it was a normal earthquake. He saw one wall of the building crack and fall apart, and grabbed Ryan's arm, ready to pull him into a run as soon as the shaking stopped.
Once it did, only the slightest of trembling remaining underfoot, the two moved, taking advantage of the distraction caused by the other patients screaming. As they got over the pile of rubble and into open air, they headed for the fence, which they could see had a gaping opening where the gate had been. Before they reached it though, John realized Ryan had stopped and turned, seeing that the teenager was staring off into the distance. "Ryan?"
John turned to see what had caught Ryan's attention and knew he'd been right, this hadn't been a normal earthquake. There was a wall of fire rapidly heading their way. A wall that seemed to stretch up as far as the eye could see.
John ran back to Ryan, figuring if they were about to die, he might as well die beside the kid who'd become part of a very ragtag team in the hospital. "Close your eyes," he told Ryan, moving to block Ryan's view. He closed his own eyes as the roar of the fire got all too close all too fast, and then...
An odd tingling sensation itched over his skin, and suddenly the air was cool instead of unbearable hot, and there was a stillness in the air, along with a quiet.
John slowly opened his eyes to see the Daedulus, complete with O'Neill watching him and Ryan with a raised eyebrow. "General?" John asked, surprised.
"Nice jammies," O'Neill replied with a smirk.
