Fic: Very Small Town-Like

"It'll be fun to go on a road trip!" Brooke said mockingly as she wiped up the food her godson had smashed into the table. "No, you won't be the fifth wheel to the two couples!" She made a face at Jamie, but had to smile when he giggled.
"Thank god there's a baby thre, I thought you were one of those psychos you hear about all the time," a voice said.
Brooke looked up and smirked at the guy who was leaning against the counter, looking at their booth. "Babysitting duty while all my friends have fun at the hotel. I swear, the only reason they asked me to come was to be their babysitter."
"How old is he?" the guy asked.
"Year and a half."
"My baby cousin is six months," the guy said as he came over, gesturing at the other bench in the booth and sitting down when Brooke noddd. "Kids are better company than most people, so... I think you prbably came out on top on this trip."
"I'm Brooke, and this is Jamie."
"Jess," the guy replied, shaking first her hand, then Jamie's, making the toddler giggle. "Good firm handshake, I'm impressed," he joked. "Question is, do you have a throwing arm like my cousin Sarah? I swear the kid gave me a concussion last time I babysat her."
Brooke laughed. "Aw, poor baby!" she said mockingly.
"She did! I oughta make my uncle pay for the doctor bills!" Jess said, lightly thumping his fist on the table for emphasis. He smirked as Brooke laughed again. "So, where's the trip leading?"
"Back home to North Carolina," Brooke replied.
"I'm headed home to Conneticut myself," Jess said, then he made a face. "I just called Stars Hollow 'home'," he said in disgust. "The place is practically hell on earth with all the happy little small town folk who all know eachother and all hate me."
"I wonder why the happy small town folk would hate you," Brooke said, shaking her head and trying not to laugh again.
"Yeah! I'm very small-town like," Jess said, chuckling. "I fit right in!"
When Jamie bean to giggle as though he knew what bull it was, Brooke lost it and burst out laughing.
