Title: All These Lives
Author: Mara
Fandoms: The OC/OTH
Rating: R
Warnings: Violence and abuse.
Summary: Never gonna let you take my world from me.
Note #1: Another in the Hallelujah series. Title is from 'All These Lives' by Daughtry. Oh! And about the titles, while all will be after songs, not all will be after song titles, some may be from lyrics of the song, because I think a couple songs I'll end up using are already titles for fics of mine... lol
Note #2: Two bigger than the usual AU things for OTH fans: Jamie is Lucas and Brooke's son. And I know Lucas isn't THIS big of an asshole in canon (I do dislike him and I will argue that he HAS shown some small signs of violence), but in this story he is. Call it Dan's genetics kicking in, call it the pressure from his career, either way. I don't wanna hear 'Lucas wouldn't do that!' in comments because in THIS fic, he WOULD. Sorry, but I'm still somewhat annoyed over the person on youtube telling me how wrong my GH AU series was... gah... lol
All These Lives
Brooke sat down in front of the mirror to regard the bruise on her cheek, her fingers slowly glancing over the swollen, purple and black skin. She knew she should leave, she shouldn't let Lucas do this to her, but she couldn't bring herself to chose to be alone again. But as much as Lucas hurt her, with words and in the last few years with fists, he was also a good father to their son, and Jamie idolized him, so she wouldn't leave.
"Ow! Daddy stop!" Jamie cried, and Brooke was on her feet and running before her chair had the chance to hit the floor. In Jamie's room, Lucas had hold of the little boy's arm, shaking him.
"What are you doing?" Brooke demanded wrenching Lucas's hand off of Jamie's arm and picking her son up to hold him close. "Answer me!"
"He destroyed my manuscript!" Lucas replied.
"It was an accident, mama," Jamie said, burying his head against Brooke's shoulder as she held him protectively.
"You heard him, it was an accident, now back off, Lucas," Brooke said.
"It was my only printed copy..."
"Print another one," Brooke said. "You do not get to lay a finger on my son."
"He's mine, too, just like you are," Lucas said.
Brooke stared at him for a moment. "Does that mean I should teach my son how to hide the bruises with concealer, too?" she asked. She saw Lucas' stance change, and changed her own to make sure the blow only hit her and not Jamie. When she stumbled from the force, Jamie slipped from her arms, thankfully landing on his bed, and she quickly straightened and moved between them. "Feel like a man, Lucas?" she asked. "I let you hit me, because I kept thinking you were an amazing father, but you are not going to hit my son!"
"I can do whatever the hell I want with my son and with you!" Lucas replied, his hand lashing out to grab her hair and yank her towards the door.
"Mama!" Jamie screamed.
"Stay there!" Lucas ordered, slamming the door before the shoved Brooke against the wall. "You really thought you could get away with that?" he asked.
"You can do whatever the hell you want to me, Lucas Scott, but I will not stand by and let you hurt Jamie," Brooke said.
Lucas leaned in close, smirking as he felt the tremor run through her body and whispered in her ear. "How are you gonna stop me?" he asked before moving his mouth to press it against hers.
~~~
Brooke slowly pushed back the covers and bit her lip to keep from gasping in pain as she got out of the bed she shared with Lucas, scared of waking him up. She grabbed clothes, keeping a scared eye on Lucas' sleeping body as she dressed, then slowly crossed to the door and eased it open, freezing as the hinge squeaked and Lucas shifted. When he didn't wake up, she edged out the door and eased it shut again before tiptoeing down the hall to Jamie's room.
The moment she opened the door, she knew her son was awake. "Jamie?" she whispered.
"Mama?" Jamie replied, sitting up in bed.
Brooke switched on the bedside lamp and slowly eased herself down to kneel beside the bed. "I need you to get dressed, okay?"
"Why?"
"You and me are going on a trip," Brooke said. "Just the two of us."
"Away from daddy?" Jamie asked.
"Yeah, baby, away from daddy," Brooke said.
"Daddy hurt you, didn't he?" Jamie asked, his small hand reaching out to touch Brooke's face, where she knew there had to be more bruises now.
"He will never hurt either of us again," Brooke promised. "I won't let him."
~~~
Brooke had always been impulsive, but grabbing her son and taking off in the middle of the night when she was almost in too much pain to move was bad even for her. The only things they'd brought with them were the clothes on their backs and Jamie had grabbed hold of a single stuff animal to carry, but Brooke hadn't wanted to risk Lucas waking up and realizing they were gone before she'd had the chance to get them the hell out of town. She'd let him get away with hitting her, too convinced that without him she'd be alone for good, but she wasn't going to let her son be hurt. For Jamie, she could be strong and figure out a way to handle being alone.
It wasn't until the sun had started to come up that she pulled into a gas station to get gas and coffe and looked into the backseat and realized which stuffed animal Jamie was holding. "Is that Waffles?" she asked.
Jamie nodded. "You said he was extra special and would protect me from monsters," he said. "I think he'll protect us from daddy."
As Brooke stared at her son's stuffed bunny, she suddenly knew who she could go to. She just hoped that, despite how he'd left so many years before, Ryan was still the same guy she'd fallen in love with and he'd help them. "I think he will, too," she said, trying to figure out if she had enough cash to pay for gas to California.
The End
Lucas is an evil SOB in this universe... lol... And yeah, for the record I know Jamie would have been being hurt just by being in a house where his mom was being abused, but... I know women don't always think of things that way at the time, only later.
It probably was, but just in case it wasn't: Brooke HAS become a famous designer, she married Lucas, who's a famous author. So when Brooke got pregnant, Ryan hear about it and sent a gift, a stuffed rabbit, with a note saying it's name was 'Waffles'.

Date: 2008-04-06 08:16 am (UTC)Just like you, I don't like Lucas (I won't say I hate him, but I think he changes his mind too much, just like Peyton). And he's such an ass in your story! I wonder if maybe, the kid could be Ryan's and she didn't tell Lucas? Anyway, I love little Jamie, so it's an awesome story (just like the others ^^ )
