Warnings: Mentions of violence, sex, underage drinking, character death, murder, and other nasty stuff. Nothing graphic.
Summary: Most of the world is either dead or Crazy, but in California a group of survivors tries to find a way to avoid both fates.
Notes: Here it is, the end of the story... finally... lol... I considered writing more story, but actually I felt that the last chapter was a good place to end it. The group was reunited, and Ryan was still doing his leader thing...
I had fun with this Epilogue, writing it in a style borrowed form two sources: first, the book 'World War Z' by Max Brooks (Which I so very much love), and 2nd from a Stargate:Alantis fanfic, 'Written By The Victors' (Which rocks so damn much I can't express it... lol... look at my reccomendations list if you wanna read...) WWZ is written as a series of interviews with survivors of the Zombie world, while WBTV is written with bits of regular fic in between extracts from books written about the events of the story.
Epilogue - Shout
"Despite, or perhaps because of, his youth, Ryan Atwood is considered one of the greatest leaders of the Post-Outbreak world. At only 16 years old, he found himself leading a group of survivors, most of whom didn't know anything about surviving, and against all odds he managed to keep the majority of them alive and safe. He's famous the world over, and a hero to those who live in the Alcatraz Sanctuary. But, oddly, he's about as humble a person as anyone could ever find, helping out all over the Sanctuary in whatever capacity he's needed."
"Ryan Atwood is still a handsome man, despite the burn scars over the right side of his body and face, but that's not why the people of Alcatraz Sanctuary are drawn to him. He is a charismatic young man, who is often difficult to track down because he helps out wherever he is needed on the island. He has an office, which was once the Warden's office when this was a prison, but it's more likely to be filled with toys for when he spends time with his children and, more recently, his first granddaughter, the child of his adoptive daughter."
"By all accounts, Atwood was something of a bully. He forced people to do what he said by threatening to at best abandon them and at worse kill them. He had at least two of his people acting as his executioners, killing on his orders. The most outspoken opponent of Atwood's reputation as a hero is Zach Stevens, the son of Senator Gregory Stevens. Zach witnessed Atwood's cold blooded side on more than one occasion, and credits the fact that he's still alive with Atwood's cowardice and desire to keep the blood off his own hands by forcing others to do his killing for him. Now the leader of the New United States based in Washington DC, Zach has proved himself a solid and trustworthy leader."
"Zach Stevens? He was a traitor. Ryan didn't hesitate to bring him into the group, even though Zach was more worthless than me when it came to survival. Ryan and Zach got off to a bad start with Zach making moves on Summer, who Ryan was involved with already, and then questioning why we all listened to Ryan. Yeah, Ryan snapped and told him off, yeah Ryan said that without his leadership the rest of us would die, but guess what? It was the truth. We survived because of Ryan and the rules he laid out. Yeah, Ryan didn't like or trust Zach much for the couple days Zach was part of our group, but he didn't kick him out because he didn't have proof. And when he did have proof, it was almost too late because the people Zach was really working with had shot Ryan twice, almost killed him. Yeah, after being stitched up and recovering for a day, Ryan dragged himself to where we'd locked Zach up and he threatened Zach with a gun. But the gun wasn't even loaded. Ryan had unloaded it because he didn't want to risk giving in to temptation. And you know what? If he had asked me that day to put a bullet in Zach's head? I would have. The guy's a traitor, and I think it's sad that he's in government now. A good reason for Alcatraz not to join the new federal government, if you ask me. I don't want that asshole having any say over how we do things here."

Well, I won't, and good luck finding anyone else who actually knew him and who will. Ryan always put everyone else first, because that was who he was. Atwood and his inner circle live in luxury, with the largest, most secure quarters for themselves, while everyone else lives in the former prison cells, often with only walls of sheets separating one family from the next. People work constantly in all aspects of the island, quite often hard labor, regardless of their age or gender. The sick are kept locked away and hidden from sight, and Atwood can often be seen standing were he can be seen clearly, reminding the people of how they are always being watched. He is a dictator, and those who say otherwise are simple in awe of his good looks and mock-shy smile. He has even managed to get the children of men he murdered to side with him."
"Yes, the stories are true. The year of the Outbreak, Ryan was involved in an argument with my father, there were guns involved, and my father died. What people leave out is that my father was a slow burn. He seemed mostly okay, and we all put his minor... instabilities... off as grief over my sister and mom dying. He'd gotten worse as the days passed, and one night he lost it entirely and turned a rifle on Luke Ward. Ryan tried to talk my father down, and we all thought he'd managed until my dad lunged for Ryan's handgun. While they were struggling, my father trying to kill Ryan and Ryan just trying to keep my father from getting the gun, it went off and my dad died on the living room floor. People also leave out that Ryan had his first shutdown that day.He was 16 and he'd just, albeit accidentally during a fight for his life, killed a man he knew. He couldn't really take it and for about 15 minutes, he just shut down and stared into space. But he pulled himself back up, and he solidified the plans to leave Newport and go somewhere far away, somewhere safe. I think that night was the real beginning of him becoming the man who saved everyone he could, and grieved for everyone he couldn't. We're alive because he stood up and said it had to be done."

I never met Volchak, he died when Casey was still pregnant with me, but I know all about him from the other members of their group constantly saying that he was a hero and Ryan's group were murderers. That's such a load of crap. Casey told me the truth before she dropped me off on the pier and left me there for Ryan and the others to come get me. I was 5 years old, and she just left me there, hoping they'd take me in and protect me from the scum the rest of their group had picked up over the years. And, despite the fact that it had barely been a year since one of the guys, Donnie, had almost killed Ryan and Alex in an ambush, they took me in, and Alex and Luke adopted me. These people had every reason to hate me and throw me away, because Casey left a note for them that said who I was, but instead they kept me and loved me. That's why people want to come here, because we welcome with open arms, not with hate and anger."

There's a couple of people out there who try to bad mouth Ryan, say he's a dictator and a monster, that he rules with an iron fist. It's bullshit. Ryan is the gentlest guy I've ever known. He doesn't 'patrol' Sanctuary to remind people that they're being watched, he walks around looking for anything he can help with. He tells the kids stories. He carries his granddaughter around on his hip and makes silly faces at her all the time. Everyone here has their own choices, and we all choose to follow Ryan because he's a damn good leader and an even better human being. We'd follow him anywhere, and he wouldn't let us down."

Then went and got some of our things from the house so we wouldn't have to. I was 3, Josh was 5, we didn't really understand that he didn't ask our moms to let us go with him, that he couldn't because they were dead on the couch. Or at least, I didn't understand it, maybe Josh did. But what I remember the most is all the times dad would tell me stories and try to make things as normal and happy as possible for me and the other kids. I remember him being hurt or sick and trying to comfort me because I was scared for him. I remember that he protected all of us when he was really too young to have that responsibility. That's why everyone loves him. Because my dad's a hero."
"Ryan Atwood is a man who honestly doesn't seem to understand just how amazing what he has done in his life is. He has built one of the most secure and peaceful communities post-outbreak. He has a loyal group of citizens that are comfortable disagreeing with him, and whom he listens to. Not bad for a 'stupid and desperate kid' as he's been known to call himself."

I was 16 when it started, and I was a stupid sixteen who'd gotten a girl I wasn't even really dating pregnant and then couldn't even keep her and my son safe when push came to shove. I spent those early years in a constant state of fear that I was going to do something wrong and get everyone killed. I still live with that fear every day. I still have nightmares about it all being over and all of us dying because I've made a mistake. So, hero? No way in hell. I was just a scared kid who couldn't handle the idea of losing anyone else, so I stepped up and took charge. I made a hell of a lot of mistakes, I almost got myself killed more than once. The only 'great thing' I accomplished was that I didn't fail miserably and kill everyone. And trust me, that actually is a pretty great and amazing accomplishment for a Grade-A fuck up like me."
The End
::sigh:: Done... lol... I'm sad to finish this story, but also... I like this ending. It shows that they survived, the world rebuilt. Yeah, things aren't perfect, but still, life endures.
There was, for a brief time, a slightly different version of this where Ryan was always discussed past tense and at the end it was revealed that he had been assassinated under orders from Zach. The very last section was always going to be Ryan's quote, though, with the original intent being that it was a memorial to who he was. Then i decided that was a bit too cruel, and instead I left it as hopeful and him alive.

Araya doesn't have any kids, and has become a doctor in the infirmary, working with Lu, Nick, Peter, Emily, and Summer.
Alex and Luke adopted Laura, the daughter of Casey and Volchak, who Casey had been very early in her pregnancy with when Volchak was killed. Casey told Laura the real truth, for the most part, before abandoning her, and Laura believes that while Volchak was evil, Casey was just pulled in by a desperate desire to survivor.
Trey and Lindsey have 2 daughters and a son, and they're happy together.
Kirsten and Peter wound up together eventually, and while Sophie Rose calls Peter 'Dad', she knows all about Sandy.
Ryan and Summer adopted Marnie, and she has a daughter, though the father doesn't matter. Ryan and Summer's biological daughter, Lily, is healthy and happy, but just as fierce and stubborn a survivor as her parents. R/S also have a son, Seth, who oddly enough tends to babble a lot, which often leaves Ryan in particularly feeling a little sad and wistful.
Zach found his way into politics and manipulated his way into being a leader. His government forces women to have at least 2 children so they can repopulate. He'll be forced out of his position when it comes out that an assasination attempt against Ryan (which almsot killed Marnie's baby girl instead, since he was holding her) had been ordered by Zach.
Ryan and the rest of the Alcatraz Sanctuary have flat out refused to join Zach's government, and Alcatraz is considered the capitol of the Western States, which include Washington State, Oregon, California, and Nevada. More states and their connected Sancturies are interested in joining.
The Crazies have mostly been contained, but there's still occasional outbreaks and discoveries of individual Crazies who have survived. Anyone entering a Sanctuary, particularly Alcatraz because of their experience with slow burns like Jimmy, is observed for a week before being allowed into the general populace.
For the record, I wouldn't rule out writing shorter pieces that take place in this universe, showing little bits of life in Alcatraz Sanctuary.
I may even write ones of this universe in other fandoms.
Imagine the Winchesters in the middle of the Outbreak... they can't fight it because it's nto supernatural... or is it... maybe that's why it's not contagious, because the Crazies are demon possessed but something went wrong in the link and just made them mindlessly violent...
Or John Sheppard on leave between Afghanistan and Antartica ends up leading his own little rag tag bunch... including McKay, who'd been temporarily back at Area 51 when it all went down and is trying to get to his sister in Canada because he's worried... lol...
Anyway, I may write more in this universe at some point, but for now, 'tis done.

But no matter what, I like this way of ending this. It gives a great perspective on how life in the sanctuary took place and what everyone thought about it and its people.

I would like to see what life is like in Alcatraz Sanctuary and would like to see Zach get what's coming to him when it comes out that he tried to have Ryan killed and instead almost killed his granddaughter and all the stuff Zach did before he got into the political office he is in.
