Just a little thing, a list of my favorite characters from all my fandoms, and the reasons WHY they're my favorites.

In general, I prefer Brains over Brawn and/or Good Looks. I prefer sweet over jerk. I prefer outer strength hiding the inner vulnerability, although sometimes inner strength hidden by outer weakness draws me in, too.

Lucas Wolenczak (SeaQuest): My first fandom love. My first ever fics were SeaQuest fics, all focusing on Lucas. He's a genuis who can handle anything involving computers and hacking, but physically not so much. Yeah, he falls into the category of annoying teenage genuises saving the day, but he was shown to have flaws. He had parents who didn't really seem to give a damn. He was stuck with grown ups for friends because most kids his age were turned off by his brains. He was so desperate for a stable home, that he hid in the air dycts of the SeaQuest after being ordered to leave the sub for his own good. I'll always love Lucas.

Ryan Atwood (The OC): I think everyone who reads my journal knows I love Ryan. On the outside, he's tough, but inside he's a broken kid who needs to know that he's loved and won't be abandoned again. He's so desperate to be accepted by those he loves that he forgives his parents and his brother for all they've done to him at different times in his life. He forgives his girlfriend for all the times she's been horrible to him. He forgives Seth for betrayals of trust and for borderline cruel comments. He just wants to be loved, but at the same time I don't think he ever really believed he DESERVED to be loved.

Seamus Zelazny Harper (Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda): He's a "frickin' genuis" to quote his own self description. Yeah, he's sort of egotistical when it comes to describing his intelligence, but he's also exactly right. He grew up in poverty, and through his rbains found a job as an engineer that got him off the garbage dump that Earth had become and into space. He found a new family with Beka, Rev, and Trance, and later with Dylan and Tyr as well. He grew up terrified of Magogs and Nietzscheans, but first be became friends with Rev Bem and later he came to trust Tyr like a brother, though he was wary of Tyr at first and it's been suggested that he was wary of Rev Bem at first, too. Harper judges people based on who they are, not what their species is, which is one of his best qualities. Plus? he's jsut adorable in the baggy clothes! lol

Brooke Davis, Nathan Scott, Jamie Scott (One Tree Hill): I'm lumping them together to save space... lol... Nathan and Brooke are both people that, as the series began, seemed to have it all but soon showed to be deeply wounded human beings. Nathan had a father who cared more about his potential basketball career than about him, while Brooke's parents never gave a damn at all. They both had money, but each ended up finding the happiest moments in their life to be when they weren't living in luxury (Nathan after he became an emancipated minor, Brooke when she moved in with Karen). Yeah, they can both say stupid things and act borderline cruel at times, but for the most part they've grown behind that behavior. As for little Jamie? He's too cute, sweet, and funny not to adore! "It's my life and I'm taking a stand." How can you not love a 4 year-old who says that? lol

Jess Mariano (Gilmore Girls): I think I may overall be a minority, but I think Jess was the victim in he and Rory's relationship. Yeah, he did some shitty stuff (The taking off for California without saying goodbye for instance), but I think it was more about him not really understanding that she'd care. Liz was a shitty mother to him, and while in the end she FINALLY grew up, he didn't have any decent role models for most of his childhood, not until he moved in with Luke. I think the primary reason Jess turned his life around was that he decided he wanted to be worthy of his uncle caring about him, he wanted to make Luke proud of him. He was a wounded little boy who figured out how to grow up into someone who, while still wounded inside, was forging a good life and a good future for himself. Even if Rory still screwed with his head when she showed up at his bookstore.

Dr. Spencer Reid (Criminal Minds): Another mega-genuis. Reid is so smart when ti comes to facts and profiling, but at the same time, he's like a little kid sometimes. He doesn't really understand how awkward he is with socializing, he doesn't get that sometimes his spouting of facts turns people off, especially since most people wouldn't understand what he's talking about. He's one that vulnerable on the surface, but has an inner strength that most people don't see. When it comes down to it, he can be counted on to do what has to be done (like shooting the hostage taker at the hospital, even though he'd been having trouble passing his re-certification to carry a gun), especially when lives are in danger. By all indications, he also managed to pull himself out of the drug addiction, showing he's stronger than he's given credit for.

Zoe Carter (Eureka): How cna I not live the spunky girl who sometimes has fire engine red hair and is overall normal, but is actually pretty damn smart. And yet she lies about her IQ to keep her dad from feelign bad about his, because she loves him and would rather he feel good than get a bit more praise. I can picture Zoe growing into Eureka, and staying even after she grows up and could leave. I see her ending up working in the Global Dynamics labs, but walking around in bright clothes and fire engine red hair while making discoveries.

Lt. Colonel John Sheppard (Stargate:Atlantis): He's just a woobie! The guy seemingly has no family, at leats that he's close to, sicne he made the decision to come to Atlantis based ont he flip of a coin and his comments about his team being his family. he was willing to take on Ronon, a guy who initially took he and Teyla hostage, onto his team because he recognized that Ronon was drifting and needed them. Sheppard is protective, at times overly so, of his team, and would do anything for them, even going to the point of convincing a man to sacrifice his own life for the sake of McKay's sister. And you gotta lvoe a military man who likes kids as much as Sheppard does, even going to far as to play with McKay's niece to try and distract her from her mom being missing.

Remy 'Gambit' Labeau (X-Men): What to say about Remy? He's so cocky and self assured on the surface, but I truly believe it's to mask some self doubts. He sees his fellow X-Men as heroes, but isn't so sure he's a hero, despite that fact that he's saved plenty of people. Yeah, he's made mistakes (He took part in the Morlock massacre, but didn't know they'd all be killed until the middle of it, at which time he helped at least one Morlock escape at great risk to himself). He's a flirt, but it he's actually involved with someone, it's not a passing fancy for him. He loved Rogue, despite her poor treatment of him at times. He forgave his fellow X-Men for abandoning him to die. He just wants to belong.

Scott 'Cyclops' Summers (X-Men): Scott... he's so uptight most of the time, but it's clear it's because he doesn't want anyone to know how much he cares. He lost his entire family as a child, spent a huge hunk of his life thinking they were dead, and he doesn't WANT to care that much about anyone else that he could lose. You can tell, though, that underneath it all he really DOES care about every single student at the school, and about his fellow staff members, even Logan. He's a part of something, and for him, that's enough.

As an aside, I'm a fan of the Third Summers Brother theory, and firmly believe that, despite apparently it later being proved in the comics to be wrong, that Remy LeBeau is the Third Summers Brother... lol...

Charlie Pace (Lost): Everyone's favorite drug addicted ex-rockstar turned hero. Charlie had a bumpy ride, but he proved himself early on to be a good guy who wanted to help, when he actually approached Claire willingly to talk, and then provided her with the imaginary peanut butter to chear her up. Yeah, he had his not so glorious moments (the whole thing with wanting to babtize Aaron and taking him into the water...) but he truly loved Claire and Aaron, and they were an amazing family. Despite my use of the past tense above, I'm still hoping that the new season will reveal Charlie to be alive afterall, maybe a prisoner of one group or another, but alive.

Alec (Dark Angel): Alec is... he's arrogant as hell, and he knows just how handsome he is, he's kind of money hungry, and yeah, he's a jerk quite a bit. But in the end he's also a good guy at heart. He helped the escaped X-kids (Bullet, Ralph, Fix-it, Zero, and Bugler) when he didn't have any reason to. He came to consider Joshua a good friend, and could be counted on. He felt guilty about costing Max her chance to be with Logan. Alec wants to be loved and belong, but at the same time he's scared to elt anyone in so it's hard for anyone to accept him. Yeah, he makes fun of the not so good looking Transgenics, but they are still his family and he'll still defend them to the end.

Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly): Again, he can be a great big ass sometimes, but he loves his crew and considers them to be his family. Even River and Simon become part of that family. The look on his face in the first episode, when Kaylee was shot, shoes how much he loves her. When Jayne makes it clear how willing he is to betray the rest of them, Mal threatens to kill him. Mal puts them all at risk to help a member of the crew/family when he agrees to sneak into the hospital so Simon can probably examine River, btu he still hides his desire to help River by saying it's about how much money they could make by selling stolen drugs.

Dean Winchester (Supernatural): Dean can act like a jerk sometimes, but when he loves someone, like his brother, he'd do absolutely anything, even sign away his soul (literally!) for them. Yeah, it's kinda weird that a guy who hunts evil stuff loves msuic that is sometimes associated with devil worship, but it's a fun quirk! lol... Dean is protective, and despite his frequent one night stands, there are some women he'd be manogamous with, like Lisa, if only she would ask. Dean's the type who would claim to be lousy with kids, but actually would be the best person to leave kids with, because he'd keep them entertained, but wouldn't let anything or anyone hurt them, either.

Charlie Salinger (Party of Five): Charlie did a lousy job those first few months, but then he started trying and he really did try his best after that. Yeah, he screwed up a lot, but he loved his siblings and did what he had to in order to take care of them. He was stupid to cheat on Kristen, but he realized it almost immediately. He forced Bailey and Julie to take WAY too much responsibility at first, but he turned that around later by taking it on himself. One of my favorite moments will forever be Charlie and Claudia setting up Claud's tent in the living room.

Yeah, so, that was totally random... lol... but it seemed like fun to explain WHY I love who I love... and yeah, most of my favorite characters (Brooke and Zoe are like the only exceptions) are guys, but... whatever. I swear, it's not just because they're hot! lol...

Now, I have to start gettign ready because I got to go into work for a couple minutes to pull pizza sauce and diced cheese from the freezer and put them in the fridge at my station so it'll defrost by Monday so I can actually make pizzas on Monday... lol... Then I'll either walk home or hang out at the Union until my mom gets off at 5 and get a ride home with her. I haven't decided yet, I'll do that once I see how it actually FEELS outside, becaude 29 degrees and windy is MUCH worse than 29 degrees and no wind... lol...

And damn... I've spent over an hour typing this entry... lol

Me too. And I hated Bailey. He was always so self-righteous, especially when it comes to Charlie. Season5 when he actually went through with that custody-fight? Just to beg Charlie barely a year later to take Owen back? *hate*

I agree with you on so many of these (I never saw SeaQuest, Part of 5, or Dark Angel and I'm not a huge Scott Summers fan). It was a fun peak into why you write the characters as you do.

And thanks for including Spencer Reid! I just found Criminal Minds and am slowly working my way through Season 1.

And you should totally stay inside until you get a ride. It's freezing outside for me, and having just gotten home I'd recommend against walking outside.

The ones I've watched, I agree with. :) But who do you ship Mal with? That's the big question! (I'm a shameful Mal/River shipper myself, and don't I get hassled about it.)

You aren't the first to say River's childlike qualities disqualify her from shipping.

I just remember being 17 (being 14 for that matter), and at least wanting a boyfriend. :)

My dislike of Gambit is probably different than most people's.

My dad used to read me his older comics when I was little, but I'm unsure if Gambit was even in those. I don't remember. When I started reading X-Men on my own, though, I had already moved from Los Angeles to New Orleans.

Everything that made the character a New Orleanean was so foreign. Not because I wasn't exposed to those things in real life but because those real life things were completely different to what was in the comic. Starting at his name (I've never met anyone named Remy) to his speech (his accent and always calling himself by name) to his manners (people in Southern Louisiana can be severely polite in speech and I remember feeling a few times that it would've stopped some of his flirtation).

He was an alien to me, basically. I didn't understand where any of it had come from. From the beginning, I always viewed him as a caricature (and a really unfamiliar one at that) instead of a character. He went through some pretty intense things, sure, but he was never real to me like some of the other X-Men were. I could never take anything that happened to him too seriously.

Because of this, all I see is the cocky, self-assured guy, and that's really really annoying to me.

Other X-Men are stereotypes, too, and some of those I even like. I'm not sure if Gambit was introduced to me at just the wrong time of my life (just about a year after I'd moved) or if I was doomed to dislike the guy from the very beginning.
