No spiel, just straight to fic.
Prompt: A young man learns that his girlfriend got pregnant and had an abortion without telling him.
She was the one, the girl Ryan planned to marry and settle down with, and life was going to be good and they'd be better parents then either of them had as small children. Then he overheard her talking to one of her friends about how children would just complicate things in her life right now, and that's why she 'took care of' her little problem a few weeks ago.
"What?" Ryan asked, catching Taylor's attention.
"I was just telling Mary about how I..."
"You had an abortion?" Ryan asked. "You... you had an abortion and you didn't even... I didn't even... you didn't tell me, you just went and...?"
"I thought you agreed that women had the right to choose?" Taylor said.
"You didn't even tell me you were pregnant," Ryan said. "You didn't... You didn't even talk to me about it..."
It just would have complicated things when everything is going to well," Taylor reasoned. "Ryan, come on, we're both so busy, and a baby would get in the way of that. It's really not a big deal..."
"But you didn't tell me," Ryan repeated. "If I hadn't overheard you, would you have ever told me?"
"I don't see why I would," Taylor said.
"Because we're engaged? Because it was my child and I deserved to know?"
"It's all a moot point, it was taken care of..." Taylor said, starting to turn back to her friends.
"When will a baby not be in the way?" Ryan asked, catching her attention again. "I mean... you're always talking about travelling the world and making appearances, and I'm going to be on site a lot... when will be the right time?"
"You have a point," Taylor said. "I'll make an appointment for you..."
"Appointment?"
"A vasectomy, so we don't have to..."
"A... no, Taylor, you're missing the point," Ryan said. "You know I want kids, you've always known that..."
"And I also know you're scared to death of being a father, so why take the..."
"Because it's worth it," Ryan said. "Because I see how Sandy's eyes light up when Sophie Rose calls him 'daddy' and I want to feel that happy, because... because I want to hold my child in my arms and know that there is something that perfect in the world and somehow I was a part of it. Because... because I want to be a dad, and you know that, Taylor. Why... why did you let me think you wanted the same thing?"
"Ryan..."
"Forget it," Ryan said.
"You'll see, our lives are going to be amazing..."
"Yeah, they will," Ryan said. "Our separate lives with other people."
"What?"
"I can't marry you, Taylor. Not when you... when you'd take away something that you know is important to me," Ryan sighed and took her hand to slip the engagement ring, the one that Kirsten had given him to use and that had belonged to her mother, off of Taylor's finger. He kissed her cheek, then turned and walked away. feeling heavy hearted, but knowing that really, it had been the only choice.
The End
Ahem... yeah... lol... I'm angsty tonight... this one is another one that may have a follow-up at some point... lol

It is nice to see you are writing again. That means your spirits are up. I am happy for that.

Date: 2007-09-26 08:20 pm (UTC)Cold, indeed, is the only word that came to mind for Taylor. And Ryan, stunned and at first bewildered. I'm not surprised you had him take back the ring- but that it was Kirsten's mom's- *sniffles* I love the reference that his relationship to Kirsten is that warm and close.
Loved this line- this is indeed Ryan:
