missmara13This guide/primer has spoilers up to the current episodes, and uses some spoilers, rumors, and speculation about upcoming weeks and months. If it hasn't happened yet on the show, it's either complete fabrication or my take on the spoilers.
There are six main families in General Hospital, all of which tend to be heavily intertwined to the point where they are all connected to eachother in no more than 2 steps. The show takes place in the fictional town of Port Charles in Upstate New York.
Lucky Spencer is the main protagonist of this story. He's 27 years old, a cop for the Port Charles Police Department, and an overall good guy from a working class family. In 1999, when he was 17 years old, he was living on his own in an apartment over a bikeshop following a falling out with his parents, though he was getting closer to them again. He was dating his first true love, Elizabeth, and they had plans for a future together. Tragedy struck when a fire started in the apartment, and a body was found in the bed that was identified as Lucky's. The only problem? Lucky was alive and well, being held captive by a known psychopath named Faison in a little concrete room. The little we saw of Lucky's captivity was bad enough, but there were hints that it got worse.
When Lucky finally came home to Port Charles, he was different. He withdrew from family and friends, and actively pushed Elizabeth away. Later it was discovered that Lucky had been brainwashed by Faison and another Spencer family enemy, Helena Cassadine, into turning against his family. While the brainwashing was eventually broken, Lucky and Elizabeth ended up apart for many years after.
Eventually, though, they found their way back to eachother and married in a lavish ceremony at Lucky's half-brothers mansion. They were happy for a while, then the inevitable happened, at least inevitable in a soap opera, and thigns fell apart. While trying to save Elizabeth from a deranged kidnapper, Lucky took a fall and injured his back severely, needing surgery to repair damage. In the aftermath, he began to believe Elizabeth was having an affair with a docter at Port Charles General Hospital, where she worked as a nurse. This led him into abusing drugs, and then into having an affair with Maxie Jones, who provided him with drugs.
After many confrontations with Elizabeth and his brother, Nikolas, over the drugs, Lucky finally entered rehab after learning he was going to be a father. While it was difficult, he got clean and returned home to try and work thigns out with Elizabeth. Things seemed to be going well and they remarried in a small ceremony in Lucky's family home, which they moved into with Elizabeth's son from a previous relationship, Cameron, who Lucky loved like his own. Then, slowly, the cracks began to form.
Elizabeth was spending more and more time with Jason, who had once been Lucky's friend but now was on the opposite side of the law as a mobster to Lucky's cop. Finally, the truth came out that after catching Lucky and Maxie together, Elizabeth ahd a one night stand with Jason. After this, Lucky began to grow closer to Jason's ex-fiancee, Samantha 'Sam' McCall, but mostly resisted the attraction because he wanted to be with Elizabeth.

It wasn't until several more months later that Lucky learned the full truth: his beloved baby son, Jake, was actually Jason's. Lucky loved Jake and his stepson Cameron like his own, and would have kept being their dad if Elizabeth hadn't left him for Jason and taken both boys with her. Lucky finally gave in to his attraction to Sam, and they began to date. They were happy for nearly a year, and were about to announce the fact that, despite previously being told she couldn't bear children, Sam was pregnant. Lucky was finally going to have a child that was his by blood and not just in his heart, and trusted Sam when she said it was his, so of course everything had to go wrong.
Sam got into an arguement with Elizabeth, who was by now married to Jason, and they ended up beating eachother up a bit. Less than 24 hours later, Sam was walking along the docks, ehading to meet Lucky for lunch at his family's diner, when she was shot and killed. While no one has been arrested for the crime, it's common knowledge that Jason threatened Sam's life if she didn't leave Elizabeth alone, leading Lucky to believe Jason committed the crime, or at least ordered it.
In brief, the other characters are:
Luke Spencer - Lucky's father. Luke is an overall good man, though he's had his less than stellar moments, and he loves his children unconditionally and would do just about anything for them.
Laura Spencer - Lucky's mother. Laura is currently catatonic and institutionalized following a mental breakdown a few years ago. She briefly came out of it in late 2006, but slipped away again within weeks.
Tracey Quartermaine - Luke's current wife. Stepmother to Lucky and Lulu. Tracey can often be cold and distant, but she does love Luke, and cares about his children, especially Lulu.
Lulu Spencer - Lucky's younger sister. Lulu is 20 and in college, bouncing between boyfriends regularly. She loves her brother, but doesn't clearly remember the pre-kidnapping Lucky.
Nikolas Cassadine - Lucky and Lulu's half brother (same mother, different fathers). Nikolas' family has been enemies of the Spencers for around 30 years, but the brothers put a stop to the Spencer/Cassadine war, even though it's set to restart.
Alexis Davis - Mother of Sam, Kristina, and Molly, Aunt of Nikolas. Alexis and Luke are sometimes friends, and she's come to be fond of Lucky, who she felt treated Sam the way she deserved.
Bobbie Spencer - Luke's sister and Carly's mother. Bobbie is a nurse at GH, and works with Elizabeth even though she can't quite forgive the woman for what Lucky's gone through.
Carly Jacks - Lucky's cousin. Carly owns The Metro Court hotel with her husband, Jax, who she shares a daughter, Sarah, with. She also ahs two sons, Micheal and Morgan, with her ex-husband, Sonny.
Jasper 'Jax' Jacks - Carly's husband. Owns The Metro Court with his wife, and shares a daughter with her, Sarah. Stepfather to Micheal and Morgan. Was friends with Sam for many years.
Sonny Corinthos - Carly's ex-husband and the father of her two sons, alone with beign father of Alexis's daughter Kristina and of Kate's son Spinelli. Sonny and Luke were once good friends, but not so much anymore.
Kate Howard - Spinelli's mother and Sonny's neighbor/sometimes lover. The former editor of 'Couture Magazine', Kate lost everything and started over as a fashion consultant in Port Charles.
Micheal Corinthos - Carly's son with the late AJ Quartermaine, Sonny's adoptive son.
Morgan Corinthos - Carly and Sonny's younger son.
Damien Spinelli - Sonny and Kate's son. Dating Georgie after finally getting over a crush on Lulu and seeing what was right in front of him. Not on the best of terms with Sonny, but bonding with his siblings, grandfather, and mother. Has a tendency to give everyone a nickname, some affectionate, some insulting.
Mike Corbin - Sonny's father, grandfather of Micheal, Kristina, Morgan, and Spinelli. Used to just be amused by Spinelli, but now he's come to genuinely love his grandson.
Georgie Jones - Maxie's younger sister. Georgie is an intelligent, sweet, young woman, who has a bitter rivalry with Lulu thanks to the other girl sleeping with Georgie's husband. Now dating Spinelli, who's... very odd.
Jason Morgan - Sonny's long time business partner, Elizabeth's husband, Jake's father, and Lucky's rival. Jason was once engaged to Sam, but that ended around the time of Jason and Elizabeth's one night stand. he was also once friends with Lucky, but that is long in the past.
Elizabeth Morgan - Jason's wife, mother of Cameron Webber and Jake Morgan, ex-wife of Lucky. Not a bad person, exactly, just... misguided and stupid.
Maxie Jones - Georgie's older sister and Lucky's manipulative ex-lover. Maxie even faked a pregnancy to try and keep him, though her plan failed.
Helena Cassadine - Nikolas' evil grandmother. Responsible for Lucky's kidnapping (Though she claims to have 'rescued' him from Faison), Helena has been at war with the Spencers for 30 years, and shows no signs of letting up.
Ceasar Faison - Evil Psychopathic Kidnapper. This is the kind of man who would kidnap a 17 year-old boy, lock him in a concrete room, torment him with images of his family moving on without him, and do it all while keeping his victim under control by threatening the boy's girlfriend.
