Chapter Ten

Ryan was pulling on a clean shirt when his phone rang. "Hello?" he said, answering it.

"Ryan?" came the tearfully, slurred, voice of Marissa.

Ryan sighed and considered just hanging up. Seth was already at the carnival, sicne he and Anna had gone tot eh comic book store after school, and Summer was going to be here to get him any minute. "Marissa..."

"Ryan, help me..."

Ryan's exasperation melted as he heard the fear in her voice. "Marissa? What's wrong?" he asked as he headed downstairs with the phone in one hand and a light jacket in the other.

"I need you, Ryan."

"Marissa, what is it? I'm suppose to meet Seth..."

"Please? Come?"

Ryan hesitated as he saw Summer standing in the front hall, talking to Kirsten, who left them alone once she saw Ryan coming. "Where are you?" he asked.

"School. I need you, Ryan..."

"Summer and I'll be there in a little bit, okay?"

"Yeah, I need Summer too," Marissa said. "Please..."

"We're on our way," Ryan promised. When there was no response he frowned. "Marissa? Marissa?" He swore and hung up, grabbing Summer's arm and pulling her outside. "We've gotta go to school."

"What's going on?" Summer asked. "Is Coop okay?"

"She sounded... weird. Off. She said she's at school and... and I think she's in trouble. Big trouble."

"Let's go," Summer agreed, climbing into her jeep and waiting only long enough for both she and Ryan to buckle up before peeling out of the driveway and heading for school.

~~~~
"They should be here," Seth said, frowning as he looked at his watch again.
"I'm sure they're fine," Anna said. "Come on, let's go play ring toss or something. I'm sure they'll get here any minute."
"Yeah," Seth agreed, nodding. "What could happen between home and here?"
"Exactly," Anna said. "Now come on. Let's go have some fun," she said, linking her arm through his.
~~~~

"Where in school is she?" Summer asked as they entered the almost empty halls. If nto for after school activities and detention, the doors would ahve been locked and they couldn't have gotten in.

"She didn't say," Ryan said. "I should have asked her to be specific."

"You weren't thinking clearly, Coop has that effect," Summer said thinking. "Okay, you said she sounded weird, off, and scared? Right?"

"Right."

"She's probably hiding then. Where no one will accidentlly find her."

"Like?"

Summer thought for a minute, then looked up. "Girl's bathroom near Ms. Harrison's class. Only the popular girls go in there, in none of them would have detention or after school activities. She's safe."

"Lead the way," Ryan said, following as Summer took off down the hall.

~~~~
"Juju," Caleb said, watching his wife absently flip through a magazine. "More of my good liqour is missing."
"So?"
"So I haven't drunk it, and I doubt you have. That leaves Marissa."
"Marissa is fine," Julie said, looking up. "Haven't you noticed how happy she's been since she moved in here? She and I are a happy mother and daughter again. Shopping therapy never fails, Cal."
Caleb sighed. "Then where is my vodka?"
"Ask the servants, maybe they took it," Julie said beligerantly.
"Julie."
"Cal, Marissa's fine. I know my daughter."
~~~~

"Coop?" Summer asked as she pushed open the door of the bathroom. "Are you here?"

"Marissa?" Ryan added.

"Ryan? Summer?" came a soft, quavering voice.

The two looked at eachother and dashed in, and found Marissa huddled in one of the stalls, shaking. There was a bottle of pills and a couple of empty bottles of vodka littering the floor, and the girl looked pale.

"Coop?" Summer questioned.

Ryan dropped to the floor and looked at the pills. "Anti-depressants," he reported, looking up at Summer. "It was refilled two days ago," he added, holding it upside to show it was empty. He craddled Marissa's face in his hands. "Did you take all of these tonight, Marissa?" he asked. "And drink all this stuff?"

Marissa nodded, starting to cry. "I messed everything up, Ryan," she said. "I'm sorry..."

"It's okay," Ryan told her, brushing her hair back. "It's okay, everything's going to be okay, I promise."

"I messed up," Marissa repeated. "I hurt you. I never wanted to hurt you, Ryan."

"I know, I know you didn't..."

"I'm sorry..."

"It's okay, it's okay," Ryan repeated. He slid his arms under her and picked her up, let out a relieved breath as she wrapped her arms around his neck. "It's gonna be okay, Marissa."

Summer held the door open for Ryan as he carried Marissa out, then hurried ahead to hold the school doors open, and then to get the jeep door opened for him. "Here," she said.

"Thanks," Ryan said, sliding into the backseat with Marissa still cradled in his arms.

"Where are we taking her?" Summer asked.

"To her dad's, he'll know what to do."

Summer nodded. "Okay," she said, starting the engine and pulling out of the parking lot. As she drove, her gaze kept drifting to the rearview mirror, and the site of Ryan's sadness filled face.

~~~~
"I'm sure they're fine," Sandy said as he watched his wife glance at the clock again.
"Ryan seemed bothered by something when he was coming downstairs," Kirsten replied.
"I think he was talking to Marissa," Sandy replied. "It's a touchy subject."
Kirsten started to say something, but was interupted by the ringing of the phone. She reached over and grabbed it. "Hello?"
"Kirsten?" came Ryan's weary voice.
"Ryan? What's wrong, honey?" Kirsten asked.
"It's, uh... it's Marissa. She took a bunch of her anti-depressants with a couple of bottles of vodka," Ryan replied. "She's okay, she puked most of it back up, I think, but... uh... Summer and I took her to her Dad's. He's gonna take her to her doctor and they'll figure it out from there."
"Oh, honey."
"We're uh, we're gonna head over to the carnival now, tell Seth what happened, try to forget for the night. Mr. Cooper actually told us he wants us to go and forget, so... we're gonna. If that's okay."
"Yeah, if that's what you want, that's fine," Kirsten told him. "I'm sure Marissa will be fine."
"Yeah, me too."
"Tell Jimmy to call if he needs anything."
"I will."
"I'll see you tonight."
"Tonight," Ryan echoed before hanging up.
~~~~

"Having fun?" Anna asked, still holding on to Seth's arm.

"Yeah, I am," Seth said, grinning.

"Forgetting Summer?" Anna added, moving to face Seth and standing close.

"Yeah, actually. For the most part."

"Good," Anna said. "But how about we go for all the way?" she added, pulling him into a kiss.

~~~~
"Coop's gonna be alright, right?" Summer asked as she and Ryan entered the Carnival.
"I've seen worse and seen 'em bounce back," Ryan replied. "I'm sure she'll be fine. Mr. Cooper will take care of her."
Summer nodded. Her eyes skimmed the booths and spotted the cotton candy. "I think I'll get some and then go find Cohen."
"My treat," Ryan said, following her over and buying her a big cone of fluffy pink cotton candy.
"Thanks, Chino," Summer said, kissing his cheek. "You're pretty great."
"Thanks," Ryan said, smiling as he turned to scan the crowd. But as his eyes landed on one pair, he froze and his smile disappeared.
"What?" Summer asked, following his gaze. And when she did, she saw what had him so bothered.
Anna and Seth. Kissing. Deeply.
"What?" she whispered, her face crumbling.
And
Chapter Eleven
The pair pulled apart and Seth was smiling slightly until his gaze fell on Summer's devasted one. Instantly he realized what he had just done and started towards her. "Summer..."
Summer shook her head and backed away. "Chino... please... get me out of here?"
Ryan nodded and took her arm, pushing their way back through the crowd to the parking lot. "Keys?" he asked as they neared the jeep, Seth close behind.
Summer dug them out of her pocket and handed them to him as she climbed into the passenger seat and he got behind the wheel. "Where are we going?"
"Don't know," Ryan replied as he started the engine and left, ignoring Seth's pleas for them to stop.
"Seth?" Anna said as she caught up with him.
"I've gotta..." Seth started. "I gotta go. I'll... I'll see you later, Anna."
~~~~

"Drunk is good," Summer said a few hours later as she stumbled behind Ryan to the pool house.

"Shhh," Ryan said, not chancing a look at the house for fear the Cohens would be there.

"Sorry," Summer replied, trying not to giggle as he opened the pool house door and led her to the bed.

Ryan gently laid her down on it and pulled her shoes off before pulling the covers over her. He turned to close the door and spotted Kirsten and Sandy standing there, looking more than a little worried. He quietly walked over to them and stepped outside. "She's... upset. About Marissa, and... her dad and stepmother are out of town, and she's..."

"Drunk," Kirsten said.

"As a skunk," Sandy added.

"It seemed like a good idea at the time," Ryan muttered.

"Please tell me you didn't..."

"No," Ryan hurriedly told them. "I know, alchohol and meds don't mix," he assured them. "I stayed sober while she got bombed." He hesitated. "Can I... can I stay out here with her? So if she wakes up she's not alone?"

"She can sleep inside on the couch," Kirsten offered.

"She and Seth... they got in this fight, so I don't think that's such a good idea," Ryan said.

"It's a big responsibility watching over someone that drunk."

"I'm used to it," Ryan reminded them. "Remember my mother?"

Kirsten sighed. "Okay."

"I'm just gonna go get some clothes for her to wear... she kinda accidently spilled beer all over her shirt and jeans," Ryan said. "I'll wake her up and get her to change."

"You're sure you'll be okay?" Sandy asked.

"Like I said, I'm used to it," Ryan repeated before heading into the house.

~~~~
A little while later, Ryan was sitting on the bed when Summer came stumbling out of the bathroom in a pair of his boxers and a very loose fitting wife beater. "How do I look?" she slurred.
"Drunk," Ryan replied with a slight smile. "Very drunk."
Summer giggled and flopped down on the bed. When Ryan started to get up she reached out and grabbed his hand. "Can you... hold me?" she asked. "Just until I'm asleep?"
Ryan hesitated a moment, then nodded and climbed into bed with her, wrapping his arms around her middle as she snuggled back against him. "It'll be okay, Summer," he whispered.
"You're the best, Chino," Summer murmured sleepily.
Ryan waited for her breathing to even out, but even when it did he didn't move. He was too tired, so he just stayed there, and soon drifted off himself.
~~~~

The next morning, Seth came downstairs, depressed at having not been able to find Summer or getting Ryan to respond when he spent a half hour knocking on the other boy's bedroom door the night before. And there still wasn't a response this morning. But as he got to the kitchen he glanced outside and saw a lump in the bed in the poolhouse. He let out a breath, decided it had to be Ryan and maybe he could get his 'brother' to tell him where Summer was. He walked outside and opened the poolhosue door. "Hey Ry?" he said as he walked over, only to freeze as he saw a second, dark haired female figure nestled in Ryan's arms. "What the hell?!" he demanded, jolting both awake.

"Ow!" Summer yelled, holding her head as she sat straight up. "Quiet!" she ordered.

"Seth," Ryan stated, his face blank as he looked at his brother.

"You slept with her?"

"No!" Ryan replied.

"Quieter!" Summer said, smacking Ryan's arm.

"Sorry," Ryan muttered. "Looks like Kirsten washed your clothes," he said, gesturing at the chair wear the clothes were folded. "Why don't you go take a shower and get dressed?"

Summer nodded, then groaned, clutching her head with her hands. "I shouldn't have done that," she said as she stood and hobbled over to the chair and then into the bathroom.

"You slept with her?" Seth said again, his voice a near growl.

"No!" Ryan repeated. "She needed to get good and bombed after seeing her boyfriend making out with someone else," he growled back. "I just took care of her. Seeing one drunk friend need to be shipped off to a hospital in one night was enough!"

"What are you talking about?" Seth asked.

"Marissa's being shipped off to rehab," Ryan said. "She downed her anti-depressants and a lot of vodka last night. Summer and I had to save her and take her home to her dad."

"I didn't know..."

"I didn't feel much like sticking around and shooting the breeze when I saw you with Anna's lipstick on," Summer said as she left the bathroom.

"Summer..."

"You know what? I'm gonna take a cue from Chino. Until you can figure out how you feel, we're over." Summer wrapped her arms around her middle and looked at Ryan. "Can I get a ride home?"

"Sure," Ryan said.

The two walked past Seth, who just stared after them, feeling more than a little guilty for his accusations, especially considering what he did last night.

This is getting better and better. I really am enjoying this story. Everyone is in character, including NeverGrowingUp!Seth, Maternal!Kirsten, Protective!Ryan, and Summer. I feel bad for her, having a Two-for-one day with Marissa doing something stupid then having to watch her boyfriend suck face with a girl who almost took him away anyway. I loved the fact that Summer is taking a page out of Ryan's book and telling Seth to get lost until he figures his feelings out.
The two walked past Seth, who just stared after them, feeling more than a little guilty for his accusations, especially considering what he did last night.
Does this refer to the kiss, or did Seth do something even more stupid? The possibilities are endless.
