Title: Separation Anxiety (Snapshots Three)
Author: Mara
Fandoms: The OC/One Tree Hill
Prompt: #093 - Thanksgiving
Rating: R
Warnings: Crossover.
Summary: Ryan and Brooke face being without eachother for the first time since they met...
Notes: Third in the 'Snapshots Series'.

To cut down on the clutter in the story, the explanations that would slow the story down so damn much, I'm gonna summarize who the OTH people are and how they connect to Brooke and to eachother real quick now...

Notes On The OTH Characters:
Karen Roe - Lucas' mother. Surrogate mom to Brooke, who she adores.
Lucas Scott - Brooke's ex-boyfriend who cheated on her with Peyton multiple times. Also Karen's son and the half brother of Nathan (Same father, different mothers).
Peyton Sawyer - Brooke's ex-best friend who had an affair with Lucas behind Brooke's back multiple times.
Nathan Scott - Haley's husband and Lucas' half brother (Same father, different mothers). Good friends with Brooke. Plays Basketball at a small college 3 hours from Tree Hill.
Haley James-Scott - Brooke's best friend, Nathan's wife, and friends with Lucas. Brooke calls her 'TutorWife' as a nickname.

Separation Anxiety

Ryan was sitting at the counter in Sandy and Kirsten's kitchen, trying to ignore Seth and Taylor as they sat smiling at eachother and probably playing footsie under the table, oblivious to the cold glares Summer was sending them from her spot near the fridge.

"There's gonna be a smack down," Kaitlin whispered to Ryan as she leaned against his shoulder. "My money's on Summer. She's short, but she's tough."

Ryan chuckled. He'd missed Kaitlin since moving away from Newport, and was glad that while Julie had decided to stay in Newport with Frank for the holiday, she'd let Kaitlin come to Berkeley. "You wanna see a picture of my new girlfriend?" he asked her, not bothering to lower his voice and privately taking a little bit of delight in the surprised and hurt look on Taylor's face.

"Hell yes!" Kaitlin said, leaning over his shoulder.

Ryan pulled out his phone and scrolled through the memory until he came to the picture he'd taken of Brooke a few days before, showing Kaitlin and Summer, who had moved to look. "What do you think?" he asked jokingly.

"She's hot," Kaitlin said.

"I agree with MiniCoop," Summer said. "Definitely hot."

"She's great," Ryan said, smiling softly as he looked at the picture.

"Just call her, you know you want to," Kaitlin said.

Ryan rolled his eyes, but switched to the directory to select Brooke's number and dial.

The second Brooke arrived at Karen's house, she wanted to hop right back in her rental car and go back to the airport to catch a flight home to Berkeley and Ryan. As if he knew, her cell phone rang and when she looked at the display she saw the picture of him asleep in her bed. "Hey," she said, trying not to reveal how she was feeling and failing miserably as her voice shook.

"That good, huh?"

"I only just got out of my rental and haven't in gone inside the house yet," Brooke replied. "But I see Lucas' car, so I know he's here, which means Perfect Peyton's here..."

"Just remember, they aren't worth your time or energy," Ryan replied. "I can't wait for you to meet Summer, she'll teach you about vibrating on the right frequencies..."

"What?" Brooke asked, laughing.

"I don't know," Ryan admitted, laughing with her. "It's something from way back... god, the beginning of our junior year of High School, Seth and Summer were broken up and Summer was going on about harmonic frequencies and vibrating at high frequencies being better than low... or some weird stuff like that. I didn't really pay attention... Ow! Summer, you did not need to hit me!" he said, the last part muffled and a mix of amusement and annoyance.

"Tell her not to get violent with my boyfriend or else," Brooke said. "And I think I've got enough bravery to do this now."

"If you need me, I'm just a call away," Ryan said.

"Sure," Brooke replied. "A call and a country."

"I love you."

Brooke smiled. "I love you, too," she said. "Have fun with your family."

"You too," Ryan said. "Try not to kill the Perfect Idiots," he added before hanging up.

Brooke laughed and squared her shoulders, then nodded to herself and jogged up to the door, knocking firmly. And when the door opened to reveal Peyton in all her curly blonde glory, Brooke even managed a smile. "Hey, P. Sawyer. Miss me yet?"

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Ryan rubbed a hand over his forehead as he listened to Taylor and Seth talk about their apartment in Providence, and glanced up in time to see how tight Summer's jaw was getting as she sat between her dad and Kaitlin. When Taylor paused to take a breath, Ryan jumped in to preempt her from continuing. "Summer, how's the GEORGE thing going? How many species have you saved?" he asked, glad to see how her face lit up.

"I helped organize this huge protest against a chemical plant in Atlanta that was dumping right next to a park where kids played, and we actually got people to pay attention and go in to inspect, and now the place has to totally change their protocols and pay for cleanup of the dump site, as well as fixing up the park to make it safe and more fun," she reported. "There's this totally gorgeous little girl named Jenny who's dad is our age, and he agreed to let us use her in a poster campaign to help the cause. You know, a picture of her, and then on one side we have a picture of a beautiful park and playground, and on the other side is a picture of a graveyard, and we have the text 'Where do you think she belongs?' and explain about the pollution."

"That's playing dirty," Sandy said, though in a tone of approval.

"When it comes to kids and their safety, there's no such thing," Neil said, clearly proud of his daughter.

"Jake said that he was glad to let Jenny be used for the campaign if it meant she'd be safer," Summer said. "She's the sweetest little girl, and he is a greatest dad to her. He was like 15 when she was born, and he's been raising her mostly alone because her mother royally sucks, and he sacrificed so much for her, including a basketball career. He was one of the star players at his high school, a Raven."

Ryan coughed slightly as he heard that while taking a sip of water. "Raven? Is he from North Carolina?" he asked.

"Some little town called..." Summer began, nodding.

"Tree Hill?"

"How'd you know?"

"That's where Brooke's from," Ryan said. "She was a cheerleader for the basketball team."

"Then she probably knows him, Jake Jagielski."

"I'll ask her next time we talk," Ryan said, nodding.

Dinner in Tree Hill was going worse for Brooke, who was stuck sitting across from Lucas, her ex-boyfriend, and Peyton, her ex-best friend who happened to be Lucas' current girlfriend, for the whole meal and hearing about how perfect things were going for them. Finally, when they shut up for a minute, Haley spoke up.

"So, Brooke, how's Berkeley treating you?"

"Really good," Brooke said, pulling out her cell and finding the picture of Ryan she had loaded to accompany his phone number. "See how good?" she said, passing the phone across the table.

"Cute," Haley said. "Who is he?"

"Hottie new boyfriend," Brooke said. "His name's Ryan, he's 19, an architecture major which makes him really smart, and he is the sweetest guy ever."

"So how long did you know him before you jumped into bed with him?" Peyton asked.

Brooke fought the urge to leap across the table and kick Peyton's ass, instead she just smiled. "What Ryan and I have is more than sex, Peyton."

"But what would a really smart guy have to say to you?" Peyton replied. "At least that you could understand?"

Lucas just about choked on his water, shooting a warning glance in Peyton's direction. "Peyton..." he began.

"You wanna see the right hook he's been teaching me?" Brooke said, standing up. "I'm getting really good at it."

"Brooke, honey, sit down," Haley said, taking Brooke's arm and pulling her back down. "Tell me more about him, how'd you meet?"

Brooke took a deep breath, then focused on Haley. "We met at the gym, at the punching bags. He teased me for having a bad stance, then showed me the right one, and then we went and got coffee and talked. Turned out he had a totally angst filled high school experience, and he's closer to his former foster parents than his real parents, and he considers his ex-girlfriend's little sister to be his sister, too. He is so sweet, Haley. And his dorm room is totally filled with pictures of him with his siblings, both biological, adoptive, and unofficial. He's on speaking terms with a couple ex-girlfriends, except for the whore who cheated on him with his adoptive brother, but he's barely speaking to the brother either, because they both royally suck..." she was interrupted by her cell ringing, and she glanced at the display, grinning. "And he clearly knows when he's been talked about," she said, answering. "Hey, baby."

"Do you think it would be a bad thing if I banged my head against the wall until I passed out?" Ryan asked in a pained voice.

"What's wrong?"

"What do you think?" Ryan replied. "Taylor and Seth won't shut the hell up, and now dinner has come to an abrupt end because Summer threw the bowl of mashed potatoes at Taylor's head for saying she and Seth are soulmates and the mermaid poem proved it..."

"Mermaid poem?" Brooke said, oblivious to the fact that Lucas was choking again.

"Long, stupid story," Ryan said. "But I am right now sitting in my jeep, wishing that I was with you. Or at least somewhere that Seth couldn't find me to talk at me."

"You have my spare key, go by my place and just hang out there. I don't mind."

"Yeah, I practically live there already."

"You're okay, though?"

"Just tired and fighting a major headache..." he trailed off, sighing. "I love you, Brooke."

"I love you, too, Ry," Brooke replied. She heard muffled voices on the other end of the line and waited. "Ry?"

"Just a sec," Ryan replied before the muffled talking continued. After a moment, he returned. "Sorry about that. I was sitting in the driveway and Sandy came out to ask me to come back inside, since Seth and Taylor plan on hiding in his room until Summer leaves."

"I really can't wait to meet this Summer, I think I'd really like her."

"You'll love her," Ryan said. "I'll still probably flee to your place later, though. I'm not staying under the same roof as them."

"If only I had that luxury," Brooke said, shooting a glare at Lucas and Peyton. "I'll see you when I get back tomorrow afternoon, okay?"

"I'll pick you up at the airport," Ryan promised. "With flowers and candy."

"Love you, boyfriend."

"Love you, too."

Brooke snapped her phone shut and slid it back into her pocket. "Pass the stuffing?" she asked, smiling brightly. Nothing could touch her good mood.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

When Ryan walked back inside, Sandy spoke immediately to the others who were still gathered in the kitchen. "It's a miracle, Ryan actually said 'I love you' to someone seemingly without tons of prompting," he teased.

"It's easy to love Brooke," Ryan said, grabbing plates to help clear the table. "Which reminds me... I kinda wanted to ask a favor..."

"What, kid?" Sandy asked.

"I know we're going on that big trip for Chrismukkah... I was kinda hoping Brooke could come with us. Her parents are gonna be out of the country, and she can't face another holiday near her ex and his new girlfriend, so..." he said. "She can chip in on gas and food and stuff," he added hurriedly when Sandy and Kirsten exchanged glances.

"You're really serious about this girl?" Kirsten asked.

"I... I love her," Ryan said, a little embarrassed. "She's completely amazing, and I really want you guys to meet her..."

"She's more than welcome to join us," Kirsten said. "Anyone who can make you smile like that it welcome."

"The question is, does she need a separate bedroom or is she going to bunk with you?" Kaitlin asked from her perch on the table.

Ryan shot a glare at the girl, who just grinned in response. "Kaitlin..."

"It is a good question," Sandy said.

Ryan sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. "Bunk with me," he finally mumbled.

"What was that?" Kaitlin asked.

"Don't start, Kaitlin."

"That'll work," Sandy said. "But you should know..."

"Seth's bringing Taylor, isn't he?" Ryan asked.

"Yeah," Kirsten said. "It's going to be very awkward since Summer and Neil are coming, along with Kaitlin, Julie, and Frank..."

"So, what's the dish?" Summer said as she walked, her slightly red eyes the only sign that she had been crying.

Ryan lifted an arm to invite her over and give her a hug. "Brooke's joining us all on the Chrismukkah trip," he said. "Kaitlin's giving me a hard time about it."

"Don't be mean," Summer admonished the younger girl. "And I can't wait to meet this mysterious Brooke."

"I overheard Ryan saying he loves her. Twice," Sandy said.

"Wow, must be true love," Summer teased.

"Shut up," Ryan said, but he was smiling as he gave her a half hug.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Two days later, Ryan was at the airport, waiting for Brooke with flowers and chocolate, when she appeared and charged him. He laughed as he caught her, spinning her around, then kissing her as he set her down. "It's official, you're coming on the Chrismukkah trip."

Brooke squealed. "I can't wait to meet your family!" she said.

"Kaitlin kinda backed me into a corner and I kinda said that you and I would prefer to share a room," Ryan admitted.

"Oh," Brooke said. "Do your parents think I'm... like a slut or something?" she asked softly.

"No! No, of course not!" Ryan said. "Hell, Seth's bringing Taylor and they're gonna share, too!" he added, rolling his eyes. "You know, I'm completely over her, but it still hurts like hell because it was him."

"I know, baby," Brooke said, reaching up to run her fingers through his hair. "But they suck, you rock, and you get me. So it all worked out pretty well, huh?"

"Very well," Ryan agreed, kissing her again.

The End

Yes, I will be writing the Chrismukkah trip... it may actually span several of the one shots because there's so much that could happen... lol

You added Jake? Who was pretty much my favorite guy on OneTreeHill.
He should totally hook up with Summer.
And yes, Peyton/Lucas and Taylor/Seth suck royally.

Ah, I was just about to head out to work ... thanks to you I can take this with me to help me through another long day :D

By the way, I haven't known Jake on OTH but I know the actor from October Road. Maybe they're fundamentally different, but I cannot see Summer with him. You did describe as a very likeable and easily loveable person though, so I will try to take your word for it.

I really need to get a Ryan/Brooke icon... Have any spares? Anyway, I like this universe- 'specially spunky Kaitlyn. Summer and Jake would go together really good, more so the new enviromentally-involved Summer. Luke? Bleugh. Just... BLEUGH!

I was thinking the same thing:
"I overheard Ryan saying he loves her. Twice," Sandy said.
"Wow, must be true love," Summer teased.

And I love his comeback...so cute: "Shut up," Ryan said, but he was smiling as he gave her a half hug.

The tension created by Seth/Taylor...Ryan and Summer was tangible. *sting and ouch*.

Glad Ryan saved poor doomed Brooke.
