I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] supreme_empress in the comments for one of my other fics, and we got to talking about a The OC/OTH/Higher Ground crossover, and this is the result... lol

This one goes totally AU... lol... even more than 'Empty Spaces' does... lol... It's loosely based on the Fox Family show 'Higher Ground', which was about a school in the pacific northwest for kids with serious issues (See the warnings for this fic to get the idea). Several The OC and OTH characters slide so easily into the roles of HG characters that it was an obvious idea... while I'm not gonna stick strictly to a retelling of HG with The OC and OTH characters, I may work some events from HG into the story. I stole the name of the school, 'Mt. Horizon', directly from HG.

The title references the song 'Blackbird' by The Beatles. I LOVE that song! lol... and the line 'take these broken wings and learn to fly' just fits so well... the kids are broken down, they need to learn to be okay...

I'll reveal bits and pieces of why the various kids are there over time, but I do intend for nearly all the teens from OTH and The OC to appear at one point or another. Oh! And while on OTH Lucas' last name is 'Scott', for plot reasons he shares his mom's last name, 'Roe' in this fic... lol

Blackbird ~ Chapter One

Ryan Atwood sat on the floor in the detox room, trying to stop his body from shaking violently.Withdrawl fucking sucked, and he was stuck going through it in the exam room of a school of screwed up kids, a half hour drive from the nearest town. His father fucking sucked, sending him away for being too much trouble. Frank Atwood could go to hell and taking that whore wife of his with him.

"Drink some water," Sandy Cohen, the headmaster of Mt. Horizon, said as he held a cup out, watching as Ryan's shaking hands wrapped around it and he took a sip. "The worst is over, kid."

"Go to hell," Ryan replied.

"Morning person, huh?" Sandy said with a chuckle. "Good thing since one you finish detoxing and start classes, you'll be getting up pretty early, greating the sunrise."

"Shut up," Ryan said, his voice slipping into a quiet plea as he put the glass aside and rested his forehead on his knees.

"It gets better," Sandy said softly, clasping Ryan's shoulder. "You'll get through this."

"The new guy is suppose to get released to the dorm today," Seth Cohen said at lunch as he slid into a seat across from his long time crush, Brooke Davis, and her depressing friend, Peyton Sawyer.

"You would know, you're dad runs the place," Peyton said, rolling her eyes. "You've got the inside track on all things Mt. Horizon."

"What's the dish?" Brooke asked. "What's his story?"

"Drugs, alcohol, self destructive activities," Seth recited from the conversation he'd overheard his dad having with several of the teachers. "No one knows why. But, apparently, Marissa knows him."

"Marissa Cooper? Queen slut of the mountain?" Peyton asked.

"The one and only," Seth said. "I heard her asking Dad about whether she could see him early, since they have a 'connection'."

"What did he say?" Brooke asked.

Seth straightened his shoulders and waggled his eyebrows the way he did whenever he imitated his father. "I don't think that's a good idea, Marissa. You know the rules, and I can't go bending them for you, regardless of how well you know him." Seth shrugged. "I don't know what the 'connection' is, but... apparently she thought it was enough to work."

"Who thought what would work?" Lucas Roe asked as he sat down next to Seth. "Hey, Brooke," he added, completely ignoring Peyton.

"Hi," Brooke said blandly before looking back at Seth. "Do we know what he thinks of her?"

"Nope," Seth said. "But I get the feeling it's not good thoughts."

"Who thinks about who?" Lucas asked. "I'm out of the loop, guys."

"The new guy is somehow connected to Marissa," Peyton explained. "We don't know how, though. She thought that connection would be enough to get Sandy to let her see him, but Sandy said no. Seth thinks that the new guy doesn't like Marissa, whatever the connection is."

"What's not to like?" Lucas asked.

"You would think she's great," Brooke said, rolling her eyes and getting up.

Marissa Cooper fluffed her hair in the bathroom of the Girl's Dorm, wishing she could put on makeup, or jewelry beyond the stupid little stuff they made in arts and crafts. Ryan was going to get released today, and she was getting another chance with him, one away from her bitch mother and her meddling. One where her annoying little sister wouldn't steal Ryan's attention constantly.

"Why are you primping?" Haley James asked as she leaned into the bathroom, giving Marissa a once over and frowning at the barely there tank top. "And either change your shirt or put something over that before you leave the dorm. It's against dress code."

"You know nothing about getting guys," Marissa said, shooting an amused glance at Haley. "Not like one would give you a second glance, anyway."

"She's primping for the new boy," Summer Roberts called from her own bed, where she was reading a book she'd bored from Peyton. "He's her stepbrother or something and she's trying for Incest Queen of the mountain now."

"It's not incest, we're not related by blood," Marissa countered as she shoved past Haley and entered the main room. "But he is really good in bed," she added with a smirk.

"You've actually slept with him?" Summer said, sitting up to stare.

Marissa just made a superior 'hm' sound and breezed out of the dorm, flipping her hair over her shoulder.

"And I used to think you and Brooke were bad," Haley muttered to Summer.

Summer snorted. "Marissa makes us look like sweethearts."

"Angels even," Haley said.

Summer gave her a look, and both girls cracked up. "Yeah, sure, me and Brooke are angels."

"Hell's Angels maybe," Brooke said as she walked in. "Is Marissa primping for the new guy?"

"He's her stepbrother and apparently she's slept with him," Haley reported.

"Oh," Brooke said, flopping down dejectedly on her bed. "So he has lousy taste... too bad."

Kirsten Nichols had seen first hand the pain that withdrawl caused, she'd watched while her little sister went through it. The shaking and the throwing up, the crying and the begging for just one hit. Somehow, it almost hurt worse to see these kids, people she didn't know beyond a name and list of their problems, going through it. As she watched Ryan slowly walk out of the detox room, his head bowed and his body still shaking slightly, she was reminded again of how things had ended for her sister, the late Hailey Nichols.

"She came by the office again," Kirsten reported to Sandy.

Sandy glanced down to be sure Ryan wasn't looking at him, then rolled his eyes. "Your stepsister must really care about you, kid," he said. "She wanted me to bed the rules and let her see you."

"She can go to hell," Ryan muttered.

"She was worried about you."

"She wants to sleep with me again," Ryan countered.

"Ryan! Are you feeling better?" Marissa said as she walked in.

"You're against dress code, Marissa," Kirsten said warningly.

"I'm hot," Marissa whined.

"No, you're not," Ryan said, rolling his eyes as Kirsten handed him his bag with his clothes.

"Everything not allowed has been removed and put aside, you'll get them back when you leave Mt. Horizon," Sandy said. "We'll get one of the boys to show you around..."

"I can do that!" Marissa offered.

"Please no," Ryan said to Sandy.

"You know that won't work, Marissa," Kirsten said, trying not to smile at the look on Ryan's face.

"I'll get Lucas or Seth to show you around," Sandy said. "Let's go find one of them, okay kid?"

"Whatever," Ryan agreed, because once his head started clearing, he'd realized what a blessing this place was.

No more Frank Atwood smacking him around for not playing the role of rich kid well enough.

No more Trey calling him because he was fucked up and needed a ride home, even though Ryan only got his license a few weeks before being sent away.

No more being too ashamed to tell his dad... or Trey... or anyone else... what she's doing. No more being scared that they wouldn't believe him.

No more letting her touch him. No more fucking Julie Cooper-Atwood.

To Be Continued...

Let me know what you think!

I figure my 'Cry Ophelia' icon will work, at least until I make a Blackbird specific one... first the story is kinda angsty... but also because of the song 'Cry Ophelia' by Adam Cohen actually working with the story... lol

In my defence, I never watched the last two seasons and only caught a show here and there... And in the end the only person I still liked was Jen because Joey/Dawson/Pacey thing irritated me!
