"Hey, kid," Hailey said as Ryan woke up the next morning and found her sitting in one of the chairs.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, sitting up.
"Kirsten and Sandy went to talk to Dr. Kim at Harbor, see about first getting the guys who did this to you expelled, and then to see if they can convince her to let Seth in for the rest of the year."
Ryan groaned and lay back down, pulling the covers up over his head. "Great," he muttered.
"You need painkillers?" Hailey asked, and by the sounds of it she was starting to get up.
"No," Ryan said, sitting up again. "But I still gotta ask, again, why are you here?"
"They didn't want to leave you alone, and apparently they don't trust Seth to Ryan-sit," Hailey said. "They think he'll flake out. Which makes it really sad that I'm the better alternative."
Ryan snorted, then grimaced and put a hand against his ribs. "Yeah, well, I'm fine. I don't need to be watched."
"Sandy said you play poker," Hailey said, holding up a deck of cards.
"Alright," Ryan relented, glad that he'd worn sweat pants and a t-shirt to sleep. "Let's play."
~~~
"How the hell did I lose $200 when we weren't even suppose to be playing for money?" Hailey asked a couple hours later.
"You played poker with an Atwood," Ryan replied with a smirk.
"Everything okay?" Sandy asked as he poked his head in.
"He just conned me out of $200," Hailey said, pointing an accusing finger at Ryan, who was counting his money.
"She only had $100 on her, but I gave her a week to get it to me," Ryan said reasonably.
"So generous of you," Hailey said, pretending to be grumpy about it.
"Atwood's don't forgive debts owed us," Ryan said. "And $100... that's a lot of money."
Sandy chuckled. "Alright, well, glad to see things went well."
"Well?!" Hailey protested. "He conned me out of $200 dollars!"
"Not my fault you agreed to play for money," Ryan said.
"You pretended not to be any good!"
"So you were planning on taking a 16 year-old's non-existant life's savings?" Ryan asked, tilting his head to the side.
"I don't think I like you anymore," Hailey said.
"I'm devastated," Ryan said dryly before slowly folding the money in half and tucking it inside his sketchbook.
"Have you eaten?" Sandy asked him.
"Thanks for worrying about me," Hailey said, disgruntled.
"You're not the one who got beat up," Ryan said. "And you didn't get stuck with you as a babysitter."
"I told you, I'm not a babysitter, I'm a Ryan-Sitter. There's a difference," Hailey said. "And Sandy, I made us sandwiches. He ate one of them. I tried to get him to eat a second, but he said he wasn't hungry."
"Is your side still bothering you?" Sandy asked, frowning.
"Just a little sore," Ryan said. "You know, from being kicked repeatedly."
"He's copping an attitude, I'd say he's probably feeling okay," Hailey said. "Or at the very least feeling really cranky."
"Bruised. Ribs," Ryan repeated pointedly.
"Cranky," Hailey and Sandy agreed.
Ryan rolled his eyes and laid back down. "Is there a reason for all this?" he asked.
"Dinner's here," Sandy said. "Hailey, you staying?"
"Why not," Hailey said. "Maybe I can get a rematch and win back at least some of my money."
"Uh, no," Ryan said, shaking his head as he got up. "I'm the Atwood who has the sense to quit while he's ahead. If you want the one who'd go double or nothing, you'd wanna play poker with Trey."
The trio made their way in the house, Kirsten immediately fussing over how stiff Ryan was walking, and him responding with a shy smile and quick reassurances that he was fine, just a little sore.
"Hey," Seth said grumpily as he sat down in the chair next to Ryan.
"You should be happy," Sandy said. "We managed to convince Dr. Kim to let you finish the year at Harbor."
"That's exactly why I'm not," Seth complained. "It's gonna start again, the pee in my shoes, the shoving, the name calling."
"Luke and I will watch you back," Ryan said, shifting to try to get more comfortable in the chair. "Plus Summer has a mean right hook and Taylor's deadly with her kicks. You're covered, man."
"Yeah, right, Luke Ward is gonna defend me," Seth said with a snort. "I'll believe it when I see it."
Ryan sighed and shrugged, whincing slightly as the movement hurt his ribs, then started eating as everyone else dug in.
~~~
"Well, you're certainly whiny tonight," Hailey said to Seth when she followed him back to his room after dinner. "What's up?"
"What's so special about him?" Seth asked, waving in the general direction of the poolhouse.
"Besides the fact that he's gone through hell and he's working his ass off to be okay now?" Hailey asked. "He's nice, Seth. You whine and complain, you basically insult one of his friends, and he still assures you that he's gonna make sure no one messes with you."
"I thought he was nice, too! Then I found out he's dating Sumer Roberts!"
"What does that have to do with anything?" Hailey asked.
"I've been in love with her forever!"
"And that's his fault how? He didn't know you, let alone know about your crush, until you came back, so is it his fault he fell for her?"
"But..."
"Don't be whinier and more selfish than me Seth," Hailey said. "Guys can't work it as well as girls can." With that she turned and left, calling out to Kirsten and Sandy that she was leaving.
Seth sighed and sank down to sit on his bed, part of him getting Hailey's point, since it was the same thing Ryan had said when he'd confronted the other boy, but an equal part of him was mad that Hailey hadn't taken his side.

Date: 2007-03-15 04:55 pm (UTC)Dr. Kim, what were you thinking taking Seth back? Throw him to the public school wolves or the tutor from hell! This should heighten the tension further with more jealousy as Seth watches and wonders at Ryan somehow fitting in so quickly where he never could...

Date: 2007-03-15 06:51 pm (UTC)She should have, but then there couldn't be some of the good moments I'm planning to happen at school! Besides, Kirsten and Sandy totally threatened to sue the school for not letting Seth back in when he tried Pot once, and yet probably half their student body drinks and does drugs every weekend... lol... and yes, it will... Ryan's been around a couple months and he has a loyal circle of friends, all of whom never gave Seth the time of day before...
