Chapter Thirty Nine

They were just finishing dinner when the phone rang and Sandy got up to answer it. "Cohen house," he said. There was quiet for a minute, then he glanced over at Ryan. "Just a second," he said, moving the phone away from his mouth. "It's Trey," he said.
Ryan got up quickly, not even feeling the pain the movement caused as he hurried to take the phone. "Trey?" he said.
"Hey, little brother," Trey replied. "Guess who got phone privileges?"
"Gee, I don't know, the idiot calling me?"
"Funny," Trey said. "You sound weird, what's wrong?"
"Some idiots jumped me yesterday afternoon, bruised my ribs, banged up face, nothing that bad. Ma's boyfriends used to do worse," Ryan replied, his tone dismissive. He missed the looks of horror on everyone else's faces, and just smiled at the sound of his brother's voice. "Kirsten took me to the doctor right after, and I got some painkillers, got out of school for the rest of the week."
"The one plus of getting your ass kicked," Trey said, trying to be funny but come across more worried. "You're resting, right?"
"I slept half the day, and I plan on sleeping lots more tonight."
"And they're taking care of you?"
"Yeah, Trey, they are. We were just finishing dinner."
"Good to know they're feeding you," Trey said. "Except for the idiots, is everything okay?"
"Everything's good," Ryan promised. "I'll be better once your out of lock up and I can see you whenever."
"It'll probably be another year," Trey said. "Mr. Cohen's working on it, but... there's only so much he can do with my record."
"Half that record is for stealing food so we didn't starve, and you took that damn car to get me away from Ma and AJ!"
"Doesn't matter, a record's a record," Trey said, and Ryan could almost hear his brother's shrug. "But now at least I can call you, right? Mr. Cohen worked that out, convinced them that you need me and I need you, that it'll help me stay on the straight and narrow."
"Will it?" Ryan asked softly.
"You know I'd do anything for you, Ry," Trey said gently. "You're my baby brother."
"I'm not a baby, Trey."
"You'll always be my baby brother," Trey replied. "And I promise, I'm gonna be good and get out of here as soon as they'll let me, and I'll stay clean and out of trouble. I know you've got them, you don't need me as much..."
Ryan glanced up then walked as quickly to the doors as he could and stepped outside before replying. "I don't know how much longer I'll be here," he said quietly.
"Why?" Trey asked, suddenly alert. "You said they were taking care of you?"
"They are, Sandy and Kirsten are great, but..."
"But what?"
"Their son, Seth," Ryan said. "He came back from his board school, and he got expelled for drugs, and... and they're gonna need to focus on him, and he doesn't like me..."
"Slow down," Trey said.
"He's had this huge crush on Summer for practically forever, and he basically said that if I don't break up with her he's gonna get his parents to make me leave, but I think I love her and I really don't know what to do, Trey... He's their son, of course they'll chose him, but I don't..." Ryan said, trying to stay looking calm even though now that he said it he began to panic fully. "Ma's actually in a real rehab this time," he added.
"No," Trey said firmly. "You're not thinking about going back to her, are you?"
"She said she'd get a house in the numbered streets," Ryan said. "I could still have Summer and my friends..."
"Until she starts drinking, snorting, and dating again!" Trey said.
"It's that or I'm gonna end up back where I was before, and I really don't want to do that again. I don't want to be that."
Trey sighed, and in the background Ryan heard a guard telling him he had to wrap things up. "Listen, if it comes to it, if you can't stay there, you go back to Chino. Eva'll find room for you. And you stay with her until I get out, then we'll get an apartment, okay?"
"Trey..."
"Ry, you can't go back to Ma."
"What if she means it this time?"
"She meant it every other time, she just couldn't follow through," Trey said. "Just... promise me that you won't make any big potentially stupid decisions without talking to me."
"I promise," Ryan said.
"I love you, little brother," Trey said.
"I love you, too, Trey," Ryan replied before the line went dead. He slowly sank down to sit in one of the patio chairs and lowered his head to his hands, shoulders shaking slightly.
"Ryan?" Sandy questioned gently as he crouched down beside the chair. "What's wrong? Did Trey say something?"
"I miss him," Ryan whispered. "My whole life he took care of me, and I miss him, and I know you're trying but I need him now and it hurts so bad that he's not here."
"I know, kid," Sandy said, reaching out to place a gentle hand on Ryan's back. "We can go see him again this weekend, okay? I know it's not what you want, but... it's better than nothing, right?"
Ryan nodded. "Thanks. For helping him. He said you got him the phone privileges."
Sandy smiled sadly. "I wish I could do more quicker."
Ryan nodded, then glanced through the door for a moment. "Can I just go to bed? I'd really rather just sleep than talk anymore."
"Sure," Sandy agreed. "I'll tell them you're tired, and to come back tomorrow.
"Thanks," Ryan said as he accepted Sandy's help to stand.

Date: 2007-03-14 07:08 am (UTC)I think that connection with his big brother is just what Ryan needed right now.
And the little comments about former beatings hopefully didn't go unnoticed by Seth either. He really should think again about how much of an asshole he is just because he had a crush on a girl and never did anything about it.
I always thought, if you really like someone, you might want to be with them, but if that is not working you would still hope that person will be happy. If not with you, when with someone else.
So Seth, grow up.
Now, will Sandy and Kirsten buy a clue about the tension between the boys soon?

Date: 2007-03-14 08:14 am (UTC)I never read a Ryan and Summer fic before, I never even tried. I started reading this one because it started out as Ryan angst, but I really like how it's going, and for the first time EVER I can actually picture Ryan and Summer as a couple. I also really like what you doing with Taylor and Luke, they actually make sense as a couple and all of them (Ryan/Summer/Taylor/Luke) really starting to feel like friends to me.
I love it that Seth is an Ass hole in this story; I always thought he was one on the show.
Any way, great chapter, I love how Ryan needs Trey and miss him, I wish Sandy will get him out of jail so he can kick Seth's ass

Date: 2007-03-14 03:55 pm (UTC)I'm sure I wasn't alone in the hope that someone overheard not just Ryan's comments about the abuse he'd suffered, but Seth's behavior. I'd be very disappointed if the same parents who took the time to determine how the initial meeting between Ryan and Seth went- and let Ryan know they were present- weren't vigilant to at least see how any relationship progressed and changed after that. Dropping the ball wouldn't just be wishful thinking and naive, it would be negligent. And we saw how that worked in canon by swapping Seth for Trey. Ouch!
Again, the tension heightens and Seth is very believable as the selfish, spoiled, single-minded kid we saw so obsessed with Summer in the pilot that he didn't hesitate to embarrass, humiliate and leave Ryan reeling in the pilot. It wouldn't take much to take that to the next level.
