"By dark?" Luke said, grimacing as he and Ryan kicked a soccer ball back and forth between them. "That sucks."
"Could be worse," Ryan said, scooping the ball up with his foot and using his knee to keep it in the air. "They could have totally grounded me."
"Are you guys done showing off for us little ladies?" Summer called.
"Oh yeah, that shirt screams lady!" Luke called back, gesturing at her tight scoop neck t-shirt.
Summer stuck out her tongue at him, and started to pout, only to smile as Ryan looked her way and gave her a soft smile.
"You two are going to be as bad as me and Luke in the sickening category soon," Taylor teased.
"Yeah, but we won't be haivng sex in an empty classroom anytime soon," Summer countered.
"It wasn't sex!" Taylor protested. "It was... heavy petting. A little groping..."
"Please, I don't want to hear the details again," Summer said, shaking her head and covering her ears.
They went back to watching the boys kick the ball around the field, and Taylor spoke after a few minutes. "Are we friends now? I mean real friends, not just 'she's my boyfriends friend and my friend's girlfriend so I'll be nice to her'?" Taylor asked.
"Of course we're real friends."
"Are we still going to be friends when Marissa comes back?"
Summer didn't respond immediately, biting her lip. "Coop's been my best friend forever..."
"I understand," Taylor said, nodding.
"No, you don't," Summer interrupted. "Coop's been my best friend forever, but I won't let her pick my friends for me. Ryan and I had this whole arguement about that topic. That a true friend doesn't tell their friends who to be friends with. And he was right. I wasn't giving you a chance because of Coop and what she'd think. But now that I have given you a chance, I'm... I'm glad I did. And Coop's not gonna change that."
"Really?"
"Really," Summer promised.
Taylor smiled happily. "Good. Because I have very few friends, so I want to keep the ones I do have."
"Well, you're stuck with me at least until I get you to stop dressing so preppy and boring," Summer said, flicking at the shoulder of Taylor's grey, pink, and green sweater vest.
"What's wrong with this?" Taylor asked. "Luke likes it."
"I guess that is what matters," Summer said. "As long as you like it too. But sometime, you have to let me go shopping with you, and you have to buy some normal stuff."
"Deal," Taylor said. "But you have to buy some preppy stuff."
"You think Ryan would like it?" Summer asked.
"Like what?" Ryan asked as he and Luke walked over, panting slightly from their work out.
"Nothing," Summer said as Taylor covered her mouth to hide a giggle.
"We probably don't wanna know," Luke said, opening the cooler and passing Ryan a bottle of water.
"Probably not," Ryan agreed.
"So, does this mean that the double date is actually gonna be with two guy/girl couples instead of the girls talking clothes and the guys getting sweaty together?" Summer asked. The moment the words left her mouth, she froze, wondering just how stupid that had been of her to say.
"Depends, was the ignoring you thing working? Or was it making you pissed?" Ryan replied, reaching over to squeeze her hand and let her know he was aware of her worry, but it was okay.
"Working how?" Summer asked, turning to look at him.
"Let me rephrase," Ryan said. "Am I gonna get a kiss or a slap if I try to kiss you?"
"Try and find out," Summer said.
Ryan grinned and leaned in, pressing his lips lightly against hers. "Hm, no slap," he said as he pulled back.
"Enough, no one needs to see that," Luke said.
"And everyone needed to see the desk sex?" Summer countered.
"It wasn't sex!" Luke said.
"Just making out and heavy..."
Summer slapped her hand over Taylor's mouth. "Stop now. Please."
Ryan grimaced. "Seriously, Taylor. We don't need to hear about it."
"I'm done with the everyone knowing about what I'm doing," Luke added, his voice pleading slightly.
"Then what's with the desk incident?!" Ryan asked, laughing this time. "Not exactly behind closed doors, Luke."
"How were we suppose to know the remote the the school news broadcast thing was on the desk?" Taylor asked.
"I'm just saying, I'm glad I missed the broadcast," Ryan said.
"Me, too," Summer agreed, giving a shudder. "Hearing about it was bad enough, I don't need to be scarred for life."
"We're never gonna live this down, are we?" Luke asked.
"I got interrogated by Kirsten about it last night," Ryan said. "So no, you won't."
~~~
"I love them, but I'm glad for some more alone time," Summer said when she and Ryan finally left Luke and Taylor alone.
"Me, too," Ryan said, reaching across the seats and taking her hand in his. "So, what do you wanna do?"
"We could hang out at my place," Summer said. "I'll force you to watch The Valley with me."
"Anything but that," Ryan said, shuddering.
Summer stuck her tongue out and turned her car in the direction of her house. "Okay, how about... we could watch some movies in the family room. We have a huge collection."
"Sounds good... depending on the movie of course."
"Well, under the taking it slow rules, is cuddling allowed?" Summer asked. "Because that could effect the movie choice."
"I think cuddling's acceptable," Ryan said. "As long as you don't get mad if I tell you to stop doing something."
"Deal," Summer promised. "What about... fearful hiding behind your shoulder?" she asked.
"Also acceptable," Ryan said, giving her a look.
"I love horror movies," Summer admitted, blushing. "And they are so much better with a big strong guy to protect me."
"I think the bad guys would have more to fear from you," Ryan said, laughing. He'd yet to be to Summer's house, they'd usually hung out at either the Cohens or Luke's, so when he caught his first glimpse of the mansion his eyes widened. "Yeah, you said house, not castle," he said.
"Daddy's fault for being an incredibly well respected plastic surgeon in a town where just about everyone has had something done," Summer said, shrugging as they got out and met at the foot of the stairs.
Ryan turned to Summer and cradled her face in his hands. "Never change anything," he whispered before kissing her softly.
"Aw, Chino's a romantic," Summer said, grabbing his hand to pull him towards the front door. "Come on, we're totally putting in Halloween so I can scream and hide behind you."
Ryan rolled his eyes, but grinned as he let her lead the way.
