Title: The Unexpected
Author: Mara
Rating: PG-13 (Chapters with higher ratings will be mentioned)
Warnings: Some violence in the first chapter, a mention of sexual assault (NOT of Ryan!) later... and near the end a smutty chapter... though maybe the warning on that one should be it was my first attempt at smut and is probably horrible... lol
Summary: A simple run to the store ends in tragedy as guilt abounds and the meaning of family is pondered.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of the The OC characters. Fox does. I'm not making any money from writing this, and in fact only have 89 cents to my name because the Laramie Job Market sucks.
Claimer: Dr. Melissa Anderson IS a creation of mine, but if for some reason you wanna borrow her? Go ahead. Just let me know.
Note: This takes place AFTER Caleb and Julie's wedding, but the Theresa getting knocked up stuff didn't happen, so Ryan's still in Newport and with Marissa (I know... yuck... lol) and Seth never left Newport to go sailing... The Newport Group/Caleb are NOT in financial trouble. This will NOT bew R/M and S/S for long, though all 4 are in major roles in this. Oh! And Summer's dad in this? Totally different from on the show... he's a total and complete ass in this!
Note #2: This was my first completed The OC fic, and personally I kinda cringe when I look back on it... lol... I like the story I told, but... don't hate me if it's sub-par... lol... except for correcting spelling errors and typoes, I've left it exactly as I originally wrote it... so beware...

PART ONE

Ryan walked into the Cohen kitchen and paused as he watched Kirsten push things around in the cabinet. "Something wrong?" he asked.

Kirsten straightened and gave Ryan a smile. "No, I just can't find the instant mashed potatoes."

Ryan returned the smile. "I think Seth used them up last night. Close Encounters was on and for some reason he decided to imitate the part of building a replica of Devil's Tower out of mashed potatoes."

Kirsten said and leaned against the counter. "I guess I should be glad he didn't started dragging a trash can, mud, bricks, and wire in and building a big one in the living room."

"He wouldn't, it would be in the way of playing video games," Ryan said.

Kirsten laughed, nodding. "Good point," she said. "Well, instant mashed potatoes is one of the only things I can actually cook without doing too much damage, so... I guess I'm off to the store."

"Can I get a ride with you?" Ryana sked. "I need to pick up a new tire for my bike."

"Sure," Kirsten agreed. "We can pick up your tire first, then go get the groceries."

"Thanks," Ryan said.

"Just let me grab my keys..." she trailed off and pointed at Ryan's feet. "And you put on some shoes," she added with a smile.

Ryan nodded sheepishly, having forgotten that he was actually barefoot. "Sorry," he said.

"I'll meet you out front in a few minutes," Kirsten replied. "After I see if Seth wants us to pick up anything for him."

"From where?" Seth asked as he walked into the kitchen.

"The store. I need to pick up a few things and Ryan's coming along to get a new tire. You want us to get you anything?"

"Ryan's going shopping with you, mom?"

"Just to get his tire and then to pick up a few things from the grocery store," Kirsten clarified.

"Shopping is shopping," Seth said. "And I don't need anything, except I think I need to talk to Ryan about if rules in Chino were so different that it was cool to go shopping with your mom."

"Not especially cool," Ryan said as he walked back in, shoes on his feet and pulling on a short sleeved button down shirt over his wife beater. "But then again, I did the shopping in Chino."

Kirsten tried, and only half succeeded, to hide the sadness in her eyes as she was reminded that Ryan didn't have the happy, safe, stable, childhood Seth had. "Come on, let's go before it gets late and the bad element starts haunting the parking lot," she said instead.

"Is there such a thing in Newport?" Ryan asked as he straightened his collar, smiling.

"I don't want to find out," Kirsten said.

"Man, it really isn't cool to go shopping with your mom," Seth repeated as he followed Ryan and Kirsten to the door.

"She's not my mom, remember?" Ryan replied. "That makes it a little less... not cool. Besides, what makes you think I care what people think?"

"Whatever, ruin your hard built rep..." Seth replied, not even noticing as Ryan and Kirsten left and the door closed between him and them.

"I think he forgets you didn't work to have any rep," Kirsten said as they climbed into the Range Rover.

"Right, I got it by burning down a house and getting into fist fights," Ryan agreed.

"Those weren't your fault," Kirsten said. "Well, not really."

"Thanks," Ryan said quietly.

"For what?" Kirsten asked, glancing over at him as she stopped at a light.

"Forgiving me. I caused you guys so much trouble..."

"None of it intentionally," Kirsten said. "Besides, the good more than makes up for the little bit of trouble."

"Still. Thanks."

"Your welcome," Kirsten said, pulling into the parking lot and quickly finding a spot. "Let's see if we can get these errands done quick. I actually planned on making the potatoes tonight, just to show you that I can cook something."

Ryan smiled. "I believe you," he said as he climbed out of the Range Rover.

Kirsten looked over at him, her skepticism clear on his face. "Sure you do," she said, patting him on the back as they started towards the store to ge this tire.

Ryan just smiled, pushing his hands into his pockets as they walked.

"Where's your mom?" Sandy asked as he found Seth playing video games in the living room.

"She went shopping and took Ryan with her," Seth replied, most of his attention on the game.

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah, he wanted a new tire and seemed perfectly fine with having to be shopping with mom," Seth said, finally pausing the game and looking up. "You need to talk to him dad, remind him that he's 17 and not supposse to like hanging out with the mom."

Sandy grinned. "Cut him some slack, Seth. Remember what he grew up with, he probably just likes the family stuff, even if it is uncool."

Seth shrugged. "I guess. But geeze, it's not like he's got a limited time to enjoy it. You and mom aren't gonna kick him out when he turns 18, right?"

"Of course not," Sandy said. "In fact your mom has me working on how much money we have to deposit a week to get Ryan's college fund up near yours by the time you two graduate."

Seth grinned. "Does he know?"

"I don't think so," Sandy said. "But he's a smart guy, he deserves the chance to go to college."

~~~~
"Ryan? Come here," Kirsten called.
Ryan joined her in the cookie aisle. "Yeah?"
"Chocolate chip or Oreo?" she asked.
"Whichever."
"Ryan, pick one," Kirsten said. "Whichever you prefer. And if there's a different one you want, pick it."
Ryan hesitated a minute, then shoved the feelings of guilt for eating food the Cohens paid for aside and grabbed a package of Grasshoppers. "These okay?" he asked.
Kirsten nodded and put them in the cart. "Actually I happen to love those, but Seth and Sandy won't touch them because of the name. No matter how many times I tell them the cookies are mint flavored, not made with grasshoppers, they refuse to eat them. And it seems silly getting them just for me. But now I have an excuse, half the family likes them."
Ryan smiled. "More for us," he said with a shrug.
"Exactly," Kirsten agreed as she steered the cart into the first empty check out line. "Tell me, honestly, was this so bad? Am I that embarassing?"
"No," Ryan assured her. "Seth's just... Seth."
"That's one way to put it," Kirsten said. She looked over at the checkout girl and noticed that the girl's gaze kept going to Ryan, who didn't even seem aware of the attention he was getting. Kirsten tried to hide her smile, and was relieved when her cell rang. She passed her credit card to the checkout girl and set her wallet down to answer the phone. Glancing at the display first, she smiled. "Sandy?"
"Hey," Sandy's voice came over the line. "I understand you and Ryan went shopping?"
"Yes, and he actually likes Grasshoppers so you and Seth don't get Oreos or Chocolate chip this week unless you buy them yourselves," she said, smiling as Ryan chuckled. When she saw him loading the packed groceries into the cart again she reached out and patted his arm. "Thanks," she told him, then she turned her attention back to Sandy. "We just finished checking out. We'll be home in maybe... 10 minutes."
"We'll be waiting," Sandy replied.
Kirsten slipped her phone back into her pocket and took the reciept from the check out girl before reaching for the cart and finding Ryan had already grabbed it and pointed it towards the door. "Let's get home. Hopefully before Seth starts wondering if I've completely ruined you and turned you into an uncool guy," she teased as they walked out. Suddenly she stopped. "I left my wallet at the check out," she said. She looked up at Ryan. "Can you go get it for me?" she asked.
Ryan looked around the parking lot, uncertain. "Are you sure it's safe?" he asked.
"There is no bad element in Newport, Ryan, you said so yourself," Kirsten reminded him. "Now go. I'll start loading up the rover."
Ryan turned and jogged back into the store, leaving Kirsten to dig in her purse for her keys. Just as she found them, a shadow fell across the ground in front of her and she smiled. "That was..." she started, looking up. But the second she saw the man in front of her she froze.
He was pointing a gun at her, gesturing for her purse. "Gimme the purse, lady," he ordered. Kirsten hurriedly did as he said, and shook in fear as he looked through it, knowing he wouldn't be happy to find no wallet. Sure enough, when he discovered the wallet was missing, he looked up again. "Gimme your wallet!" he demanded.
"I don't have it," Kirsten said. "I left it inside when I paid, please... there's 50 dollars cash in the inside pocket, just take it, please..."
"If you know you left your wallet, why weren't you going abck for it?" the man said, waving his gun in her face.
"My... my son went back in for it," Kirsten said, her gaze going over the man's shoulder as she saw Ryan coming back out. "Please, just take my purse and go," she begged, watching as Ryan seemed to figure out what was going on and started forward. "Please, just go."
The man hesitated, then saw the keys dangling from Kirsten's limp fingers. "Gimme the keys," he said. "Gimme the keys!" he repeated louder.
Kirsten took her eyes of Ryan for just a second to hold out the keys, but in that split second the teenager tackled the gun man. She could only watch in horror as Ryan tried to wrestle the gun from the man. And then she could only freeze as she heard the gun go off and saw Ryan stiffen then fall over and hit the ground, a red stain spreading out across his chest.
"Ryan!" she cried, dropping down beside him as the robber ran off, leaving her purse and keys on the ground. "Ryan? Baby?" she pleaded. "Please... say something, honey..."
