Another one I found in my drafts folder and polished up a bit for you guys.
"Ryan!"
Ryan looked up as he locked his jeep, frowning at the vaguely familiar girl before recognizing her as Becca, one of Sandy's star students, and offering her a smile. "Hey, what's up?" he asked.
"It's Professor Cohen..." Becca began. Up close, Ryan could see how red her eyes looked, and how upset she seemed.
"What happened?" Ryan asked, turning for the building and wondering how something could have happened in the 2 hours since they'd talked, confirming plans to grab lunch together while Ryan was between meetings.
"We think he had a heart attack," Becca said, leading the way. "We called an ambulance, and I came to get you so you could call Mrs. Cohen..."
"Did they take him to the hospital yet?" Ryan asked as he followed Becca towards the Law buildings.
"Not yet," Becca said, gesturing as a gurney rolled out of the building and towards the ambulance.
Ryan took off at a run. "I'm his son," he said as he got to the paramedics and Sandy.
"Hey," Sandy said weakly.
"Hey," Ryan replied, trying to smile reassuringly.
"Call..."
"I'll call Kirsten as soon as we get to the hospital," Ryan promised. "Can I ride with him?" he asked.
"Yeah, but hurry up," the paramedic replied.

After seeing Sandy to the doors of a treatment room and calling Kirsten, Ryan stared at his phone for a long moment before dialing. "Hey," he whispered when the voicemail picked up. "Look, I know when I left... I'm sorry. But my... my dad, Sandy, he had a heart attack, and I just... I wanted to hear your voice. And God that sounds corny. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have called. I'm just... I don't know what to do to fix this. Sorry." he ended the call and shoved his phone into his pocket, hands running through his hair as he moved to where he could keep an eye on both the treatment room door and the ER waiting room.
Then Kirsten arrive, frantic, and he nearly forgot all about the call while he tried to reassure her and make sure the paperwork got filled out properly. He had to take on the responsibility of calling The Nana and Seth, but after talking to the Nana, he realized he couldn't handle Seth and instead called Summer.
"Hey," he said when she picked up. "Look, something happened..."
"What's wrong?" Summer asked, sounding distracted by the raised voices in the background.
"Are you in the middle of something?" Ryan asked, aware that his voice sounded small and broken.
"What's wrong?" Summer repeated. Then she must have put her hand over the mouthpiece because her voice was muffled as she yelled. "Hey! Shut up for a minute!" she bellowed, then her voice returned to normal volume. "Chino?"
"Sandy had a heart attack," Ryan said. "It's... not good. I mean, it could be worse, he'll probably be okay, but... it's not good, and Seth needs to know, but... I already had to handle telling Kirsten and helping her fill out paperwork, and then calling The Nana, and now I've gotta pick Soph up from school and tell her... I don't think I can handle telling Seth..."
"He'll forget that Sandy's your dad, too," Summer agreed. "I'll tell him, Ry, and we'll get a flight out as soon as we can."
"You're coming, too?" Ryan asked, relieved. Summer was good in an emergency, she could keep things going.
"Of course I am," Summer promised. "Can you handle things until we can get there?"
"Yeah," Ryan said. "I... I can handle it."
"Just hold on a little while longer, then fall apart once we're there," Summer said. "I promise, i will take over the hard stuff."
"Thanks, Summer," Ryan said.
"Not a problem, Chino," Summer said. "Give Sophie Rose a hug for me, okay? Kirsten, too."
"I will," Ryan promised.

He forgot about the call by the time he went to answer the door the third time the next evening, expecting to find another of Sandy's students or colleagues looking for news or offering food and assistance where needed. Instead, he saw someone he hadn't seen in nearly two years standing there.
"Hey," Ryan said.
"Hey," Brooke replied, and a moment later Ryan had her arms around him, pulling him into a tight embrace. "It's gonna be okay."
