Good Enough - Part Four

Eh... I like the turn in this one... but not so sure about how true to the B&S characters it is... but hey, the situation Kevin, Sarah, and Justin find baby brother Ryan in is kinda unusual, so... yeah... lol...
Good Enough - Part Four
Ryan sat, tapping his foot anxiously, until the guard came. "Your bail's been paid, Atwood," the guard said.
"Thanks," Ryan said as he got up and headed into the main station to find not only Kevin, but Justin and Sarah too. "My arrest is not cause for a party, guys," he said with a sigh as he collected his things and walked out.
"Trespassing?" Sarah said. "What were you thinking?"
"I wasn't trespassing, I was invited in by a resident," Ryan corrected. "Who's mother is a bitch and a half and doesn't care if her daughter is getting hit by a man she knows is abusive scum," he added.
"Okay, what's going on?" Sarah asked, moving in front of Ryan, so he couldn't escape.
Ryan sighed, running a hand through his hair, and leaned against the wall. "The guy who I thought was my dad, Frank Atwood. He's not a nice guy. He hit me, he hit my brother Trey... he went to jail when I was 8, but I still have the scars from a childhood with him. He's living with this woman, Julie, who is the mother of my dead high school sweetheart. See, I thought, when Julie told me last Thanksgiving that I was family now, that she meant it. And I consider her younger daughter, Kaitlin, to be like a little sister. She needs me, I'm there. Well, Julie showed up at my job this afternoon and told me that Kaitlin had run away three days ago, and after a little pushing, she admitted it was because Frank hit her. And I told Julie point blank, I'd find Kaitlin, but I was not gonna send that girl back to that house. Instead, Kaitlin was gonna stay with a friend, like she has been for the last three days. And I found her, and we went to Frank and Julie's to get some of Kaitlin's stuff, and Frank had me arrested for trespassing, even though Kaitlin invited me in," he said. "It's bullshit. And it's because he knows, if he lays a hand on her again? I'll kill him. I am not gonna let her have a childhood anything like what mine was."
"Did you explain all of that to the police?" Kevin asked.
"I've gotta a juvie record, Kevin. Grand Theft Auto, Arson, Assault..."
"Those records should be sealed," Kevin said, though he was clearly disturbed by the news.
"How about the fact that the cop that arrested me tonight? He also also arrested me three years ago for trying to flee an attempted murder charge."
"What?!" Sarah asked.
"I didn't do it," Ryan said. "It's complicated, but the charges were dropped. I wasn't the one who tried to kill him."
"Still, they should have..." Kevin began.
Ryan shook his head and lightly banged it against the brick wall. "You don't get it, Kevin. I'm not like you guys. I'm that car thief from Chino that the Cohens got duped into taking in. I'm that kid who let Marissa Cooper overdose on oxycotin in Tijuana, and beat the crap out of Oliver Trask in the school lounge, and got a girl pregnant in Sophomore year! I'm the kid who was arrested right before my senior year for attempted murder, and then got expelled for decking the dean of discipline! I'm the kid that let Marissa Cooper, princess of Newport Beach, die on a road after my truck got wrecked! That is all I am to these people, all I'll ever be! Even ex-con Frank fucking Atwood is more trustworthy than me!"
"Oh my god," Sarah said.
Ryan closed his eyes, not having meant to say so much. He hadn't wanted his newfound family to know about the darker parts of his life, about the beatings from Frank and Marissa's death. "This is why I keep my mouth shut, because when I open it, I say way too much."
"Ryan!"
They all turned and saw Sandy hurrying over.
"Great, just what I need," Ryan said.
"What the hell is going on?" Sandy demanded, not happy to see three of the Walkers there.
"What are you doing here?" Ryan asked.
"One of my contacts called..."
"Well, he wasted your time," Ryan said.
"Come on, we'll..." Sandy began.
"Sandy..." Ryan interrupted.
"Why don't you crash at my place tonight?" Justin jumped in, seeing that Ryan looked about ready to snap.
"He's coming home," Sandy said firmly.
"Why do you get to decide that?" Ryan asked.
"Because when I don't decide it, you run off and live in the back room of a bar while cage fighting!" Sandy snapped.
"Real nice, Sandy," Ryan said, looking away so he didn't have to see the horror on the faces of his siblings. "It's not enough that I found out today Frank is hitting Kaitlin and I had to call my newfound siblings to bail me out..."
"I would have..."
"You would have told me not to interfere!" Ryan snapped. "You would have said that Kaitlin isn't any of my business, and I shouldn't get involved..."
"You shouldn't!"
"He's hitting her!"
"It's not your business!"
"I am not going to let her live in fear of that asshole like I did," Ryan said. "My earliest memory is of him picking me up by the throat and throwing me across the room! I'm not going to let Kaitlin have memories like that! Family isn't just about blood Sandy, remember? Kaitlin is part of my family, no matter what, and I am not abandoning her to deal with Frank alone!"
"Ryan, come on," Justin said, taking his brother's arms and pulling him away from Sandy.
"Yeah, come on," Sarah agreed, taking Ryan's other arm.
"Stay away from him until he decides to talk to you," Kevin told Sandy. "Or you'll have to deal with his other family."
~~~
"Fuck," Ryan muttered once he was in Sarah's car.
"Come on, you can crash at the house," Justin said. "Mom won't mind..."
"I need to make sure Kaitlin's okay," Ryan said.
"Do you have her phone number?" Kevin asked.
"It's in my cell," Ryan said, pulling it back out of his pocket.
"Let me see that," Kevin said. looking through the phone book until he found the one labelled 'Kaitlin' and dialed it.
"Ryan! Thank god, are you okay?" came a girl's voice.
"Kaitlin?" Kevin said. "My name is Kevin Walker, I'm..."
"One of the newfound half brothers," Kaitlin interrupted. "Is Ryan okay?"
"He's fine, we bailed him out, and he explained the situation," Kevin said. "I'm a lawyer, Kaitlin, and if you'll let me, I'd like to help you."
"Ryan told me I could get emancipated if I got a job," Kaitlin said.
"He's right, you can," Kevin said. "I'll help you with that."
"You will?"
"If it keeps my brother from getting arrested again, sure," Kevin said. "Where are you right now?"
"At Summer's. She's... almost family, like Ryan is."
"Okay, I'll get Ryan to bring me to see you tomorrow and we'll talk, okay?"
"Yeah, okay," Kaitlin said. "Thanks. For getting him out. He doesn't belong there because of another Cooper woman screwing him over. My sister did that enough."
"Don't worry, you'll see him tomorrow," Kevin repeated before ending the call.
"Thanks," Ryan said.
"If it keeps you out of jail, it's worth it," Kevin repeated. "You couldn't have called to ask for help before you got arrested?"
"I didn't think Julie would call the cops on me," Ryan said. "Look, I'll just get a..."
"Ryan, please, come back to the house," Justin said.
"We'll all sleep better knowing you're safe," Sarah said.
"That's low."
"Did it work?" Sarah asked.
"Fine," Ryan agreed.
"Then it's worth it," Sarah said.
To be Continued...
I honestly didn't intend for Sandy to be a jerk again. He just isn't handling any of this well. And poor Ryan is the one paying the price, yet again. And yeah, I have no idea exactly where this fits into the B&S timeline, but Justin is living at Nora's at the moment... lol...
Okay, no that that's written... I got this random idea for a fic but i didn't wanna write it until I finished this part... lol...
