Yeah, it's technically late now because it's after midnight, but... whatever... I've spent all dya trying to write somethign new and couldn't get past the first paragraph, so I went and found this, polished it up a bit, and I'm posting.

Remember 'Blackbird'? That was the story that was The OC/OTH in the univers eof 'Higher Ground', where the teens were all residents at a school intended to help troubled kids heal. Well, that fic fell by the wayside, but this snippet is what would have been the big reveal, when Ryan confessed to Brooke exactly why he ended up at the school, and Sandy and Kirsten found out the cause of Ryan's problems.

I openly admit that the basic set up is a total rip-off of a HG ep, but whatever... lol

Editted to add a warning for damn it... how do I warn without giving it away? Oh well, I have to so I can prevent problems: Warnign for mention of Sexual Abuse of a teenager from 14 to about 16. Not graphic, but... it's said to have happened... F-Word is used quite a bit, too...

The storm was raging outside, and Ryan leaned against the window frame, watching the rain poor down and trying to ignore the sounds of everyone gathered in the main lodge behind him. He heard footsteps coming his way and glanced up to see Brooke's reflection in the glass.

"Hey," she said, hopping up to sit on the windowsill.

"Hey," he replied, his voice completely flat.

"Is it just me or is it about 20 degrees colder over here?" Brooke muttered.

"Why don't you go back by the fire, then?" Ryan said, his voice still almost monotone.

"What is your problem? Why do you hate me?" Brooke said. "Is it because I had a..."

"No, it's better not to bring another unwanted kid into the world," Ryan said quickly, a flash of... something... crossing his features.

"Then what?"

"I was 14," Ryan said slowly. "14."

"What?" Brooke asked, confused.

"The first time that bitch came into my room in the middle of the night."

Brooke felt a chill run down her spine as she stared at Ryan, waiting for him to continue.

"There was this big storm, and my dad was working late with his business partner, Uncle Bullit. She came into my room, climbed into my bed, and said she was scared of the storm. Then she started... touching me. I was 14... of course I responded, but I didn't want to."

"Oh my God," Brooke whispered, not wanting to hear anymore but getting the feeling that Ryan needed to say it. She looked up and caught Sandy's gaze, trying to convey how much he needed to come over, right now, and listen.

"She just kept doing it, coming whenever my dad wasn't home. And when he was home, she'd make up some story about how I was rude to her, and he'd drink, then he'd hit me, then she'd come 'take care of me', which was her code for have some more sex." Ryan shuddered slightly. "I fucked Marissa because... because I didn't have a choice with Julie, but with Marissa I did, and with Marissa I... Julie's stronger than she looks. She could hold me down and I couldn't get up. But Marissa wasn't strong enough to hold me down, I could get away if I wanted to... so I... I fucked Marissa. She knew about Julie, thought it was funny that she was fucking me, too. And then Julie found out and she sent Marissa away, and she busted me on that to my dad, and he beat me again, and she 'took care of me' again, and I... and I went to my dad's office and took his gun out of the safe and I almost did it. I almost put a bullet in my head, but... but Uncle Bullit stopped by and found me, and he got the gun away, and he told Dad that I needed help and told him about Horizon... he's the one footing the bill, because Dad and Julie didn't want to waste money on it... I'm suicidal, and they don't wanna waste money on it."

Brooke looked past Ryan, to where Sandy and Kirsten have both just heard most of Ryan's story, and she bit her lip, knowing he'd be mad at her for not telling him they were there, but not caring because he'd scared her and she didn't want him to hurt himself. "I'm sorry," she whispered.

Ryan shrugged. "I knew they were there, saw their reflections," he said, turning around leaning back against the window sill. "Get it now?" he asked Sandy.

"Come on, let's go talk in my office, okay?" Sandy said, reaching out to squeeze Ryan's shoulder then putting his arm around the teenager's shoulders as they walked.

"Are you okay?" Kirsten asked, staying with Brooke.

"I hate all three of them," Brooke said. "His dad, his stepmother, and Marissa. I will never forgive Marissa." With that she went back over by the fire and sat down between Haley and Summer, leaning against Haley, who immediately put an arm around her, offering comfort even though she didn't know why it was needed.
