Chapter Six ~ Funeral In His Heart

Ryan pulled his jeep to a stop outside the Cohens and sat there for a long moment, part of him wanting to just drive away again, but most of him wanting to see Sophie Rose. Finally, he got out of the jeep and grabbed the bag holding the gift he'd bought for his sister, and walked up to the door, knocking firmly.

"You know you don't have to knock, Ryan," Sandy said with a smile as he opened the door.

"Yeah, well," Ryan said. "Where's Soph? I've got something for her..."

"Kirsten took her to the park, they'll be back in a while."

Ryan narrowed his eyes slightly, getting the feeling there was something he was missing here. "Sandy..."

"Come on, there's something in my office I want you to see," Sandy interrupted, a hand on Ryan's shoulder as they walked.

It wasn't until they got to Sandy's office and Ryan saw Seth and Taylor sitting in separate chairs in the room that his uneasiness hit full strength. "Damn it, Sandy..." he said, turning to his former foster father.

"This has all been going on too long, Ryan, the three of you need to work it out..." Sandy began.

"He was my brother she was my girlfriend, and they were fucking in my bed! What's to work out, Sandy?"

"I'm still your brother..." Seth said.

"No, you're not!" Ryan replied. "Brothers don't do the one thing they know will hurt each other the most!"

"Ryan..." Taylor broke in.

"Don't you dare," Ryan said. "You've been screwing with my life for a year, Taylor, and you better believe that when I leave here, I'm going to go file the paperwork for that restraining order." He stopped just staring at the two of them, and hear the door click close and the lock turn, making him turn and grab the knob. "What the hell, Sandy!" he demanded.

"I'll let you out when you've talked about things..."

"I'm done talking to them!" Ryan replied.

"You've yelled, you haven't talked," Sandy replied. "Just... talk to them..."

"Open the door, Sandy, or I swear to god..."

"What? You'll kick it down?" Seth asked sarcastically.

"Just open the door," Ryan repeated.

"Not until I'm sure you've all talked."

"God damn it, Sandy! You don't have the right to do this!" Ryan yelled, slamming his fist against the door. "Open the door!" When there was no response, he nodded to himself. "Fine, be as big of an asshole as your son!" he yelled before turning and going to the desk, picking up first one and then a second, bigger, paperweight.

"What are you doing, Ryan?" Seth asked, confused.

Ryan didn't respond in words, just weighed the paperweight in his hand, then hurled it at the window, smashing right through the frame. Ten seconds later, the door to the office unlocked and Sandy came in, stunned, and allowing Ryan to shove past him.

"Ryan, wait!" Sandy called, following him.

"You had no right to do that!" Ryan replied, stopping in the living room to face the man he'd once looked up to. "No right, Sandy! I'm a grown man and if I don't want to make nice with him, I don't have to!"

"You are 20 years old and..."

"I'm 21, Sandy," Ryan said. "As of today, I'm 21. I can't believe I thought you invited me to lunch because of my birthday. I should have known it was because you wanted to help Seth out, not because you give a damn about me. Stupid me, thinking that when you said I was your son all those years ago, it meant something. Now I know better." He turned away again and stormed out of the house just as Kirsten pulled up with Sophie Rose.

"Ry!" Sophie Rose yelled happily as Kirsten set her on the ground to run full tilt at her favorite brother.

Ryan forced a smile and picked her up, hugging her tightly. "Hey, Soph," he said, trying to keep his voice from cracking. "You are getting so big, sweetie!"

"Cry?" Sophie Rose asked, one tiny hand touching his damp cheeks.

"I'm just gonna miss you so much," he said, hugging her again. "I got something for you, it's on the table just inside the door, and it's special just for you, Soph."

"Ry sad?" Sophie Rose asked again, confused.

"Ryan? What's wrong?" Kirsten asked.

"I'm just sad I'm gonna miss seeing Soph grow up," Ryan said, handing her to Kirsten. "Bye."

"Ryan, what are you talking about?" Sandy asked, stricken.

"This... this was it, Sandy," Ryan said. "You're not my family anymore. I fought that for so long because I love you all so much, but I can't keep letting this happen, I can't keep surrounding myself with people who keep proving to me that they don't care as much as I do. So... Goodbye. Sophie Rose, be good for you mom and dad, and always remember that I love you very, very, much."

"Ryan," Kirsten said.

"Bye, Kirsten," Ryan said, climbing into his jeep.

"So that's it?" Sandy said. "You're just going to decide we're not your family anymore?"

"No, you made that decision when you locked me in a room with them!" Ryan replied.

"What about rent? How do you expect to support yourself..."

"I'll make do," Ryan said. "I always have. I don't need your money, I never did. I just needed my family. And you completely destroyed that illusion today, Sandy." With that, he started the engine and peeled out of the driveway, tires squealing as he made a quick turn of the wheel and took off down the street.

Jess was sitting at a coffee house, the paperwork for filing the restraining order in front of him when his cell rang. He pulled it out and glanced at the display before answering. "The cop I talked to said you've got a good case to get the order," he said.

"Can you cover me for rent for a couple months?" Ryan responded.

"What's wrong?" Jess asked, straightening.

"I'm an unofficial orphan again," Ryan said. "Sandy thought that locking me in a room with Seth and Taylor would get me to forgive them. So after I smashed a window to get him to open the door, I told him off and said they could take their money and shove it, I'd survive without it."

"Ryan, you know you're good on rent, I've got it handled. Summer offered to pay half the rent while she's staying with us, because she's gonna be using so much hot water and annoying us with girl stuff, so we're good, don't worry about it."

"Thanks," Ryan replied, sighing.

"I'm at Java, why don't you come by, we'll get coffee, fill out the forms..."

"Yeah, I'm a couple blocks away, I'll be there in a couple minutes."

"Alright, I'll order you a cup."

To Be Continued...

There will be further Ryan/Brooke and Jess/Summer moments later, but... this needed to come first...

Chapter title comes from a song by the band 'October Project'. I plan on having 'Funeral In His Heart' be on the F&OS soundtrack, so if you don't know it, you'll be able to hear it then. In the meantime, I recommend doing a google search for the lyrics, and keep in mind that, despite the sad lyrics, the song is kinda upbeat... lol... it's an odd one, but I love it.
