Chapter Twenty Six

"So, why's Cohen so hyper?" Summer asked as the four friends walked down the pier together.

"He's Seth?" was Ryan's only reply.

"Funny, dude," Seth said. "Very funny. He knows why I'm so excited, he's just playing it cool."

"Seth, he always plays it cool," Marissa pointed out, laughing. "This is Ryan Atwood we're talking about, remember?"

"Ah! But there's the rub, my dear Marissa Cooper. There is soon to be only one person in this little group of friends with a last name starting in a letter other than C," Seth said mysteriously.

"What?" Marissa asked.

"You are such a geek, Cohen," Summer said, rolling her eyes.

"Aren't you curious?" Seth asked.

"She kinda knows," Ryan said. "I went for a walk after they asked last night and we ran into eachother and I told her."

"And I told him he was being an idiot for not just saying yes when it's what he wants and needs," Summer said. "And obviously by your uber-geek factor today, he did say yes."

"Yes, indeed he did!" Seth crowed happily.

"Please don't do that," Marissa said. "And what did you say yes to?" she added to Ryan.

"They're gonna adopt me, make it all legal that I'm a Cohen. I'm gonna change my name and everything."

Marissa's face broke out into a happy smile and she quickly gave him a hug, then gave Seth one. "This is great you guys!"

"Coop, you do realize both one of your exes and your current guy are your step-nephews, right?"

"Seth and I aren't..." Marissa started, her eyes wide and worried.

"It's cool, Marissa," Ryan said. "I'm fine with it, and in case you didn't notice Summer wasn't being bitter or bitchy, just mocking."

"Since when do you say so much in a sentence?" Marissa asked, relieved.

"Since I finally figured out I gotta talk while I can when both of them are around," Ryan replied, his arm around Summer as he lightly shoved Seth's shoulder. "And since it finally sunk in, I'm allowed to express my opinion."

"Ooh, Chino has opinions," Summer mocked. "Tell me more, or wise one."

"I could give them my opinion on a good comparison between you and a certain someone..."

Summer clamped her hand down over his mouth. "Must I start listing your similiarities to you know who?"

"Can I help? I heard all of yours," Seth said, grinning. "Grumpy, grouchy, likes to hit things..."

"What are you guys talking about?"

"Summer forced Ryan to see Shrek 2 and then compared him to Shrek the entire time," Seth explained.

Marissa put a hand over her mouth to try and stifle her giggles. "That's... accurate..."

"Hey!" Ryan complained good anturedly. "Isn't anyone gonna defend me here?"

"Nope," Summer said, laughing.

"Fine, but I get to compare you to..." Ryan started, only to once more have Summer's hand over his mouth.

"Will you just let him say it?" Seth said, laughing.

"No! It's mean!" Summer replied.

"It's got some valid comparisons!" Ryan managed to get out before once more finding the hand clamped on tight.

"Who? Just blurt it out when you get your mouth free!" Marissa said, still laughing.

Ryan started mock struggling to get away from Summer, and finally managed to grab her arm and spin her around, pinning her arms to her side with her back against his chest. "Admittedly it's a little mean," he said. "But especially back when I first came to newport it was valid," he said. "Not quite so much anymore..."

"Who?" both Marissa and Seth said.

"Julie."

Marissa and Seth made faces and Marissa smacked Ryan's arm. "That is beyond cruel, Ryan!"

"And her comparing me to a big green ogre isn't?" Ryan protested, laughing as Summer tried, though not too hard, to escape his arms. He was ready to let go the second she seemed to genuinely want away, but so far it seemed more like for show at the moment. "I'm not grumpy or grouchy."

"Uh-huh," Summer said, though the effect was ruined by her snickers.

"You seem to think shopping heals all ills," Ryan began, grinning at her first outraged cry. "You can be kinda critical about appearances, you can be a bitch and a half to people you don't like..."

"Some of them deserve it," Seth said in his ex's defense.

"I'll give her that, but..."

"Enough!" Summer said, laughing. "Okay, I will no longer compare you to Shrek!" she promised.

"We'll see how long that lasts," Marissa said as Ryan released Summer.

"Hey, you're my best friend, you're suppose to be on my side!" Summer complained.

"One of the keys to successful rehabilitation is being honest with family and friends," Marissa recited in a monotone voice before grinning. "Those little keys come in handy sometimes."

The quartet laughed together. "Okay," Seth said. "Ladies, you gotta help me convince Ryan that especially now that mom and dad are ADOPTING him, it's okay for him to accept money, expensive stuff, and the big birthday party they want to through him."

"Ry," Summer began. "They're going to spend money on you. And they'll do it happily. Just accept it and make the most of it."

"Isn't there anything you really want?" Marissa asked. "Something you can't afford yourself, but they could get you?"

Ryan shrugged. "Not really."

"We seriously need to give you a crash course in behaving like a spoiled Newport kid, Chino," Summer said, shaking her head in exasperation.

Chapter Twenty Seven

That night, the Cohen family was settled around a table in The Lighthouse, eating The Nana's meatloaf and chattering generally about anything and everything that came up.

"Ryan, I really do need a list of who you want at your party," Kirsten said.

"Just give in and make a list," Seth instructed.

"I'm fine with just the family, maybe Summer and Marissa," Ryan said.

"What about inviting the soccer team?" Sandy said. "You get along with most of them, don't you?"

Ryan shrugged. "Yeah."

"If you want just us and the girls, then it'll be just us and the girls," Kirsten said, smiling. "It's your birthday, we just want you to have fun."

"Thanks," Ryan said gratefully.

"Didn't me and the girls talk to you about this earlier, Ry?" Seth said, sighing in exasperation. "I thought we made you understand. Mom and Dad WANT to spend a fortune on you. No one's forcing them, it'll make them HAPPY to do it. Sit back and enjoy the spoils of being a Newport kid."

Ryan rolled his eyes. "Seth?"

"Yeah?"

"Knock it off."

"But..."

"Seth, stop harassing your brother about this," Kirsten said.

Seth quieted down, but he kept grinning and shifting in his chair, prompting Sandy to ask, "What?"

"It's gonna be real and official," he said. "I'm gonna have a brother."

"You're 16, Seth," Ryan reminded him. "Not 5."

"But I've wanted a brother since I was 5!" Seth replied, still grinning.

Ryan sighed and shook his head, though anyone who looked could see the small smile tugging at the corner's of his mouth.

Ryan rolled over and looked at his clock. 3:30 in the morning. He groaned and got up, wandering over to the window and peeking out. As he watched a small figure snuck past the pool and into the poolhouse, flipping on a light as it did. Ryan frowned as he caught a glimpse of the intruder, and quietly shuffled out of his room, not bothering to pull a shirt on, then headed down the stairs. He headed outside and slowly entered the poolhouse, finding his target sitting on the bed with her head in her hands. "Summer?"

Summer looked up, her eyes red and puffy, and tried to wipe the damp streaks off her face. "Hey, Chino."

"It's 3:30 in the morning," Ryan said. "What are you doing here?"

"I..." Summer started. "Did you know that Newport Tennis Instructors give private lessons to their female clients in said client's bedroom at 3 in the morning?" she finally said. "I certainly didn't until a little while ago."

"Your stepmom's cheating on your dad?" Ryan asked.

"How'd you figure that one out, sherlock?" Summer said sarcasticly, then she looked horrified. "I'm so sorry, Ry, I just..."

"It's okay," Ryan replied, walking over and sitting down next to her. "You should hear the stuff I blurt out when I'm upset."

"You don't blurt," Summer replied, leaning against him. "You consider every word you say."

"Not when I'm pissed. Didn't you ever hear what I said to Julie after we helped Marissa escape the hospital?"

Summer laughed. "Yeah, Coop gave me a blow by blow... she was so proud of you. So was I."

"See? I blurt."

"Rarely."

"But I do."

Summer smiled and then seemed to finally realize Ryan was shirtless. "Nice look, Chino," she teased, running her hands over his chest.

Ryan snorted. "Yeah, nasty scar and all."

Summer looked at the scar from the shooting for a long moment, contemplating it. Then she slowly lowered her head from Ryan's shoulder to his chest, lightly kissing the scar. "Badge of honor and courage," she said.

"Don't forget stupidity," Ryan added, laughing slightly.

"It's not funny," Summer said, then she thought of something and lightly ran her fingers over the scar, her mouth forming an 'o' of happy surprise as Ryan bit his lip to keep from laughing. "You're ticklish."

"No, I'm not," Ryan argued, trying to capture her hands.

"Yes, you are," Summer replied, shifting so she was straddling Ryan and experimentally tickling him in different spots on his chest and sides. It didn't take long to realize that the only place he was ticklish was on the scar. "Very interesting," she said.

"Summer..." Ryan said, half warningly, though to Summer's ears it sounded more inviting than anything.

She leaned in and kissed him, pushing him down on the bed. It didn't take long for Ryan to respond, his hands going to her waist then sliding underneath her shirt. Summer pulled back from the kiss only long enough to pull her shirt off over her head, then dove back into the kiss, one hand going to the drawstring of Ryan's sweatpants. Ryan's hands, meanwhile, were slowly unbuttoning and zipping Summer's jeans, sliding them down over her hips.

"Oh Ryan," Summer murmured into his ear. "I love you."

"I love you, too," Ryan replied, his hands moving to unclasp Summer's bra. "You want this?"

"Want you," Summer replied breathless. She slid off Ryan to start pulling down his sweats then let out a scream of surprise and jumped up, fumbling to reconnect her bra. "Mrs. Cohen!" she cried.

Ryan jerked upright, his face going from flushed, to almost pure white, to bright red within seconds as he saw a shocked Kirsten in the doorway. "Oh sh..."
