Chapter Fifty One

Ryan sat in the sand, staring out at the water. He knew he should go back to the Cohens or at least get back into the rover before he got sick again, but he didn't move, he just sat there, wishing he had a six pack or even a joint so he could drown his sorrows. "Ma and Dad would be proud," he muttered.
He wasn't entirely sure how his phone got into his hand, and he didn't remember dialing, but when the phone was answered he let go.
~~~
Sandy was fast asleep when his cell phone began to ring, and when he grabbed it he almost turned it off without looking at the display. Something made him hesitate though, and when he saw Ryan's name he was immediately wide awake. "Ryan?" he asked, answering it.
"Theresa's dead," Ryan whispered, his voice cracking. "Her boyfriend beat her, and I took the rover to drive to Chino and see her, and I was almost back home when Arturo called me again and told me... he told me she died. Eddie killed her."
"Where are you?" Sandy asked, getting up and grabbing a pair of jeans from the closet. "Ryan? Where are you now?"
"The beach, near the pier. I parked in the lot and walked down... God, Sandy, she's dead..."
"I'm on my way, okay? Just stay where you are until I get there."
"Okay," Ryan said.
"And keep talking to me," Sandy added. He didn't like how small Ryan's voice was, how lost and young he sounded. "And if you don't feel like talking, just listen to me, okay?"
"Okay," Ryan repeated. "Sandy?"
"Yeah?"
"I went after Eddie. Me and 'Turo beat him up... not as bad as he did Theresa, but... we beat him up... I don't wanna get in trouble, Sandy..."
"It'll be okay, I'll handle that if I have to," Sandy assured him.
~~~
When he actually got to the beach, it didn't take long for Sandy to spot Ryan sitting alone in the sand, shoulders hunched. He walked over and sat down, closing his phone as he did. "Hey, kid," he said in greeting.
"I'm sorry I took the rover," Ryan replied.
"Forget about it," Sandy said, slowly, hesitantly, reaching to wrap an arm around Ryan's shoulders. When the boy didn't flinch or pull away, he took the chance of gently pulling him closer, his heart breaking as Ryan leaned against him and let go, sobbing. "It'll be okay," he whispered, holding Ryan close.
"It's not fucking fair," Ryan said. "She... she wasn't suppose to..."
"I know," Sandy said, stroking Ryan's hair. "I know."
~~~
"Well? Did you find out what happened?" Kirsten asked a few hours later as Sandy hung up after talking to a contact in the Chino Police Department.
"Apparently, Theresa told her boyfriend, Eddie, that she was pregnant, and he reacted badly, beating her up and dumping her in an alley. She was found and rushed to the hospital, but... the place is understaffed and overworked, so she didn't get the attention she needed, and she bled out before anyone could really see her."
"Oh god," Kirsten said. "So a 17 year-old girl and her unborn baby are dead? What about this boyfriend of hers?"
"Hospitalized," Sandy said. "When the police went to arrest him, they found him beaten pretty badly, but he's not talking about who did it."
"Was it Ryan?" Kirsten asked.
Sandy sighed, but nodded. "And Arturo. They went after Eddie before Theresa died, so he's not dead like I'm sure he would be if it was after."
"What do we do here, Sandy?" Kirsten said. "How do we... Do we punish him for taking the rover? For beating up that other boy? Do we let those things slide because of the circumstances?"
"I don't think he's going to make a habit of either," Sandy said. "What I do think we need to do is call Dr. Julian and see what she suggests we do." He shook his head and looked up at her. "Arturo said he didn't think Eddie would say Ryan was there, and he didn't plan on letting Ryan get in any trouble, so I told Arturo that if he winds up needing a lawyer he should give me a call."
"Good," Kirsten said, nodding. "I'm going to go check on Ryan."
"If he says he's okay..."
"I think I know him well enough to know he's lying to me if he does," Kirsten interrupted, heading outside. She found Ryan curled up on his side, facing away from the door. "Honey?"
"I'm okay," Ryan said.
"You really think I'm going to believe that?" Kirsten asked, walking around to sit on the edge of the bed near him. "I know it hurts, but you don't have to be alone in this, Ryan."
"She was my best friend," Ryan whispered. "Everytime I needed somewhere to hide when there was too much yelling at my house, Theresa was there. When I just needed somebody to tell me it would all be okay, she did that. All I had was her and Trey, and now they're both gone."
"You have us now," Kirsten said, stroking his hair. "And Trey will be out of jail as soon as possible, Sandy's not going to give up on him. And you have all your friends here..."
"It's not the same," Ryan said, looking at her and trying to keep the emotions off his face and out of his voice as much as possible. "I love you guys, but it's not the same."
"I know," Kirsten said, sighing. "I wish we could fix this for you, all of it, and make the pain go away and make sure you never hurt again. If we could, we would in an instant."
"I don't wanna live with my mom," Ryan whispered, the facade cracking and tears starting to flow down his cheeks. "She's gonna try, and she's gonna hate me, but I can't do it again, and I know she's not gonna stay clean..."
"Where do you want to be?" Kirsten asked.
"With you," Ryan said, his voice breaking. "I wanna stay here, with you."
"Then we will fight with everything we have to keep you here," Kirsten said. "We will do everything we can to keep you right here with us, where you belong."
Ryan nodded and sat up, letting Kirsten pull him into her arms. "She's gonna hate me..."
"She loves you, she'll understand that this is what's best for you."
"No, she won't," Ryan said, shaking his head. "You don't know her like I do, she won't care..."
"Well, we do," Kirsten said.
To Be Continued...
About time he tell THEM that he wants to stay, huh? lol... is such a fragile, broken boy underneath everything... he just needs a hug...
