Someday

It had been almost six months since the demon, hiding inside their father's body, had killed Sam. Dean had been too shocked to do anything at first, and by the time he came to his senses and grabbed the gun, it was too late and the demon escaped, still in John's body. It had been six months of Dean blaming himself for the death of his family. Six months of trying to hunt alone and failing miserably. Then he found himself in Newport Beach, California, following a lead on the demon.

There was a family, parents, two teenager sons, and a baby girl. The parents, the baby, and one of the sons had died in a mysterious fire in the nursery. The other son had survived, and the cops were looking at him as a suspect. So Dean was being led by the grandfather through the house to the room where the surviving son was staying, and he couldn't help wondering if the grandfather himself might not be demonic, considering the guy's attitude.

"The FBI is here to see you," the man said gruffly as he opened the door to a bedroom.

Dean took in the spartan room, with neatly stacked boxes along one wall, and finally his gaze fell on the blonde teenager sitting on the floor with his head on his knees. "I'm Agent Donelley," Dean said. "I wanted to talk to you about the fire..." he trailed off as the boy continued to sit there silently.

"Talk to him, boy," the man said. "Ryan."

The boy, Ryan, finally lifted his head, and Dean had to fight not to flinch at the hollows under his eyes. "I just want to hear about what you saw that night," Dean said.

"I'll be downstairs," the grandfather said before leaving.

"Real helpful guy," Dean said, hoping to illicit a response, any response.

"He thinks it's his fault because his company built the house," Ryan replied, his voice hoarse. "At least he's not another person who thinks I did it."

"What happened, Ryan?" Dean asked as he sat down on the floor next to the teenager.

"I don't know," Ryan said. "Everything was fine when I went to bed. But then... I heard Kirsten scream, and..."

"You call your mom Kirsten?" Dean asked.

"Foster mom," Ryan said. "Her and Sandy took me in."

Dean nodded. "Go on."

"She was screaming, and by the time I got outside... I could see the flames in their room... I tried to go in, and I tried to get to them... but... the doors were locked... the back doors are never locked..."

"I don't..." Dean began.

"I lived in the poolhouse," Ryan explained. "I had to cross the patio to get to the house... but they never locked the back doors... But they were locked that night. And then..."

"Then what?" Dean asked.

"You're gonna think I'm crazy or lying, just like everyone else."

"Try me."

"There was someone... or something... in there. It was... it was like a shadow, standing in the kitchen while the flames spread... I think it was looking right at me, and... and I think it laughed." Ryan shook his head. "I think the only reason Caleb hasn't kicked me out is because he thinks I'm having a breakdown. I think he may be right."

Dean felt a shiver run down his spine. He knew he shouldn't, but he couldn't leave this kid here, thinking he was loosing his mind. "I know you're not lying, and you're not crazy," he said. "What you saw, it was real."

"What kinda FBI Agent are you?" Ryan asked. "Think your Mulder or something?"

Dean couldn't help grinning. "More like the fake kind," he confessed. "I'm not FBI, but I know about this kinda stuff. I know about the thing that killed your family."

"It's not human, is it?" Ryan asked.

"No, it's not," Dean admitted. "And it killed my family too. Killed my mom years ago, would have killed my baby brother, too, but Dad got the rest of us out. Then Dad started hunting it, along with every other kind of thing like it. And a while back, it finally stopped us. It took over my dad's body, then it killed my brother, Sammy, and then it took off. I'm trying to find it, maybe get my dad back."

"What is it?" Ryan asked.

"A demon," Dean said. "We usually just call it 'The Demon', it doesn't have a real name, as far as we can tell. But... it goes after kids that are special, always on the night they turn 6 months."

"Sarah was six months," Ryan whispered.

"Yeah."

"You're gonna keep looking for this thing?"

"Yeah, I am," Dean said. "I'm sorry I didn't get here in time for your family." He slowly stood, holding out a slip of paper that had his real name and his cell number on it. "If you remember anything else, I'm staying at the Mermaid Inn, room 34."

Ryan nodded. "Okay," he said.

"I'm gonna be leaving in a couple days, so..."

"Right," Ryan agreed, nodding again.

Dean was loading up the Impala when a range rover pulled into the parking lot and Ryan got out. "You remember something else?" he asked.

"I wanna help you," Ryan said.

"Tell me," Dean said.

Ryan shook his head and opened the backdoor of the rover, pulling out a duffel bag. "No, Dean. I wanna help you track this thing down and kill it. Or... or whatever the hell you do to get rid of it."

Dean paused, staring at him. "You're grandfather..."

"Caleb barely tolerated me before," Ryan said. "Now it's only obligation. But I told him, about what you said, and about how I wanna help you do this, and he agreed I could go with you."

Dean was quiet for another moment, then nodded. "Get in," he said. "Hope you like Metallica."

"I can pick up earplugs," Ryan replied as he tossed his duffel into the backseat and climbed into the passenger side.

Dean nodded to himself as he climbed into the driver's seat. "We'll find this thing."

"Yeah," Ryan agreed, settling into the seat. "We will."

The End

Just a short thing... although while writing it, I wanted to get pulled sideways into an exploration of Caleb and Ryan being forced into being family because something happened to the Cohens... lol... I might consider some other fics following Dean and Ryan's adventures in hunting...
