Chapter Three
Ryan was in the middle of making breakfast when Daniel slowly walked into the kitchen. "Morning, kid," Ryan said with a smile.
"Hey," Daniel replied. "Is there anything I can do to help?"
"Can you get out plates and utensils?" he asked, pointing to the right cabinet and drawer. "Saturday mornings we eat using the coffee table so Lily can watch her cartoons," he explained. "That way we're still eating as a family."
"Do you always eat as a family?" Daniel asked.
"Most of the time," Ryan said. "Sometimes either Brooke or I have to work late or have some important business related party to go to, and then we don't. But we try to keep that stuff to a minimum."
"Wow."
"Did you have family dinners with you mom?" Ryan asked gently.
"She usually left before I got up in the morning, and got home after I had dinner," Daniel siad, shrugging.
"Well, we try to insist on it," Ryan said. "Once you make some friends, it'll be okay if you go out with them instead sometimes, but no more than twice a week."
"Okay, sounds fair," Daniel replied, nodding.
"If a rule doesn't seem fair, it's okay to speak up," Ryan said, trying to keep his tone conversational. "We might not change it, but we won't get mad at you for disagreeing with it."
"You're pulling out all the stops to make me like you, aren't you?" Daniel asked with a smirk.
"Am I that obvious?" Ryan asked, returning the smile. "Listen, you and I have an appointment at the hospital today to get a paternity test done. It's not that I have doubts, but concrete proof will help just in case your mom fights it. And then... then I'm taking you to meet Sandy, my foster dad. He's a lawyer and he knows tons of lawyers, so I want to make sure he knows what's going on and can help us find a good one if your mom fights this."
"But basically I'm meeting one of my grandparents?" Daniel asked. "I mean, he's the guy Lily calls 'Grandpa', right?"
"Yeah, and Kirsten will probably be home, too, so you'll meet 'Grandma', plus their daughter, my little sister Sophie Rose."
"I've suddenly got a big ass family, don't I?"
"Don't say ass," Ryan admonished lightly, then smiled and shook his head as he realized he sounded like Kirsten. "But yeah. It's... pretty big. There's also their son Seth, his wife Summer, their son. And then there's my biological relatives, like my big brother Trey and his kids, and my little half brother Jack, we have the same father. And I consider Jack's mom and his half sister on that side to be family. His sister has been my little sister since before her mom met my father."
"Wow."
"And that's just my side. Brooke's chosen family..."
"Chosen family?"
"The people I chose to call family," Brooke said as she walked in, dressed in jeans and a light sweater. "I don't talk to my parents anymore, but I still have a big family."
"Which I was just about to explain since I gave the brief on my side."
"I'll bet you gave a 'brief' of your family," Brooke replied, snorting, as she snagged a cup of coffee. "Did he mention that his 'sister' Kaitlin is the little sister of his high school sweetheart? And once gave his brother Seth pot?"
"Anyway Ryan said, rolling his eyes. "Brooke's family consists of a surrogate mom, Karen, who happens to be the mother of her high school sweetheart, but who took her in for a while so she wouldn't have to move in the middle of her Junior year. It also includes Haley and Nathan, who are Brooke's ex-boyfriend's best friend and half brother respectively, but who Brooke still loves and calls her best friends, they live in San Fransisco. Then there's Rachel who Brooke hates half the time, Mouth who used to have a crush on her, and Skillz who's smart but married to Bevin, who's definitely not... and there's kids from the two couples..."
"Yes, my family is incredibly complicated, too," Brooke said, cutting Ryan off. "And you're part of these two crazy families now," she added to Daniel. "Aren't you excited?"
"I'm not sure that's the word I'd use," Daniel said slowly.
Ryan snorted and Brooke started to choke on her coffee. "You're definitely part of this family," Brooke said, laughing.
"Daddy! Auntie Sum's on TV!" Lily yelled from the living room.
Ryan, Brooke, and Daniel all went out to stand behind the couch, watching as the screen showed a peaceful protest against a chemical plant in San Fransisco. "Oh no," Brooke said, looking a little pale. "I heard about this yesterday... I should have known Summer was there."
"What did you hear?" Ryan said.
"Well..." Brooke began, and then it happened. The security guards pulled their guns.
Ryan dove for the remote, turning the TV to one of the channels with cartoons before pulling cellphone off his belt and hitting the speed dial for Seth. "Tell me she's okay," he said the minute his brother picked up.
"You saw the news?" Seth said, sighing.
"What do you think?" Ryan replied. "So did Lily! I changed the channel just in case, but... just... is Summer okay?"
"She's fine," Seth said quickly. "No one got hurt, but... Summer's pissed and on the warpath that somebody pulled a gun on them when they were being peaceful. We're talking full on rage black out. So, uh... can David come hide at your house?" he asked.
"Sorry, we've got... we've got our own stuff going on..."
"You've never minded including David before," Seth whined.
"Seth, this isn't 'we're going to the zoo' kinda stuff," Ryan said, rubbing his forehead. "This is 'my long lost son with Theresa came to see me yesterday and is gonna live with us now' kinda stuff."
For a moment Seth was blessedly silent, then, finally, he spoke. "Huh?"
"Daniel Diaz. Theresa's son. He's mine. He wants to stay. I want him to stay. He's staying."
"Oh," Seth said. "But..."
"Seth, we're figuring stuff out here, we can't try to handle David right now, when he's probably upset about Summer and he's gonna be confused about this, too, so... we just can't," Ryan said.
"Tell him to call Hales and Nate," Brooke suggested. "They might be able to babysit."
"You hear that?" Ryan asked.
"Yeah, I'll call them," Seth agreed, sighing. "Do mom and dad know?"
"Not yet," Ryan said. "I'm going to tell them this afternoon. So don't open your big mouth, okay?"
"Right, sure, I can do that."
"Sure you can," Ryan said, rolling his eyes. "I'll talk to you later. Tell Summer I'm glad she's okay."
To Be Continued...
Okay... I unintentionally kinda lied... lol... Sandy and Kirsten didn't show up this time... lol... people mentioned Seth and Summer and I decided not to wait to show them... lol... Next time will be Sandy and Kirsten, I swear... lol... unless something else comes up... lol...
