Title: Family (Prologue)
Author:Mara
Fandom: The OC/OTH (Ryan Atwood/Brooke Davis)
Rating: R
Warnings: Crossover. Language.
Summary: Ryan is finally allowed to be a father to his son, but could it be too late?

Note #1: This chapter is mostly just to explain the background.
Note #2: So, okay, this wasn't intended as a crossover. Then I started writing, decided to make it mostly canon and keep Seth/Summer together, and suddenly Ryan was married Brooke Davis from One Tree Hill... lol... If you wanna know about Brooke, click to look at an entry I made about her here. It includes info and some pictures, both fo her and of some other OTH characters who may or may not appear... lol
Note #3: Inspired by two sources:
1. [livejournal.com profile] aelisaphira made a post on LJ about what if the kid in the final scene of the finale was Daniel, Theresa's son.
2. [livejournal.com profile] indigorayne made a challenge on [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] about Daniel having been raised being told Ryan was violent, and deciding to trakc Ryan down and find out for himself. It included that Ryan and his wife needed to have at least 1 foster/adoptive child and 1 biological child.

And now...< BR> Prologue

Daniel Diaz had always been told that his biological father was violent and wasn't safe for him to be around, and besides Ryan wasn't the type to be a good dad. Daniel never questioned what she told him, assuming she was telling the absolute truth. Then he turned 12 and she got married to a guy name Mark Holden who hated Daniel. The feeling was mutual, but it still hurt when Daniel overheard Mark asking Theresa why they couldn't send Daniel to live with his father.

That was also when Daniel found out that Ryan didn't know Daniel was his. That Ryan wasn't really violent, he just had a volatile temper with people he didn't love. That he hated her for what she said to him last time they saw eachother, and he'd never speak to her again. Plus, he lived all the way up in Berkeley, and she didn't want her son to be that far away, even if having him in the house was too hard sometimes. What would people say if she sent her son so far away to live with a stranger?

Daniel started saving his money then. Whenever he got some, even if it was just some change, he would put it into the lockbox that his Uncle Arturo had gotten him for his 12th birthday. He had enough for a bus ticket by the time he hit 14, and a little online research helped him find the address of the building Ryan's Architecture firm was working on. Daniel didn't leave a note, just packed his backpack and left the house while his mom and Mark were at work.

It was a bright day when Daniel climbed off the bus in Berkeley, and luck would have it that he ran straight into a guy who was short on cash for his ticket away from Berkeley, and was willing to sell his bike for 20 bucks. Daniel grinned as he climbed on the bike and took off at top speed, bouncing on and off the curbs as he headed for the build site. It was a long ride, but he still got there a good hour before most people would call it a day, and he took a seat on a low wall across the street, his new bike leaning against his leg, and settled in to watch and wait.

It wasn't exactly his most brilliant plan ever, showing up randomly and hoping he could find Ryan and that Ryan would want him, since it had been pretty clear the last few years, ever since his mom got married and even more often since she got pregnant with Mark's kid, that she didn't really want him anymore. Daniel didn't really fit into the perfect Holden Family, and he really hoped he could fit in with the Atwood family.

And then he saw Ryan, juggling a briefcase and blueprints while he talked into his cellphone and crossed the street to his parked range rover. Daniel watched Ryan for a moment, then locked eyes with the man, who paused, hesitating. Then he spoke, and Daniel wasn't sure whether to be relieved that he sounded nice enough, or terrified that he wouldn't want him once he knew.

"Hey kid, you need help?"

"Are you Ryan Atwood?"

"Yeah," Ryan replied, frowning. "Do I know you?"

"You did when I was a baby," Daniel said, taking a deep breath. "My name's Daniel Diaz. I'm your son."

~~~
Ryan Atwood met Brooke Davis right before he graduated from Berkeley. She was in town to sign a deal to have her clothing line sold on the west coast, and they happened to both go to Ryan's favorite restraunt at the same time. They were both alone and the restraunt was busy, so they had eached been directed to sit at the bar to wait for a table to open up. Ryan listened in amusement as she told three different guys she wouldn't touch them if they were the last man on earth and all the sex toys were gone, and then glanced up as the stool next to him squeaked slightly.
They wound up talking while they waited, and when a table opened up for Ryan, he invited Brooke to join him for dinner. And then he gave her a ride back to her hotel, and she suggested they meet up again the next night, for a planned dinner. He didn't find out for a couple of weeks that she had only been suppose to stay in Berkeley for a week, but had extended her trip and gotten an apartment because of him. They went out every night, and Brooke invited herself to his graduation, cheering almost as loudly as the Cohens did, and they loved her the moment the met her at the party they threw for him that night.
When Kirsten decided Sophie Rose was old enough that she could get back into the work force, she came up with the idea of working with Ryan and starting their own architecture firm, since he was miserable at his current job. Brooke would watch Flapjacks for Ryan, and she'd come over and conspire with Sandy and Sophie Rose to make sure Ryan and Kirsten took breaks and remembered to eat, and she was the one who finally settled their discussion about names for the firm by telling them to just call it A&C for their last names and stop talking about it.
When A&C Architecture completed their first job and got paid, Sandy and Brooke took their significant others out to dinner to celebrate, and Ryan pulled Brooke aside to ask her what she'd say if he told he he wanted to marry her. Brooke had smiled and said he'd have to ask her if he wanted to know, so he pulled out the diamond ring that Kaitlin had helped him pick out the last time she'd visited, and Brooke had nodded as he slid it on her finger.
Her parents thought they were too young and refused to come, but the Cohens and Coopers were there, and Brooke's friends from North Carolina came bearing stories about Brooke in high school, including ones about her flashing the entire school when the time capsule got opened early and how she got Fall Out Boy to endorse her Class President campaign.
They became parents about a year after the wedding, but the pregnancy had been rough on Brooke and her doctor said another one could kill her, so they were resigned to only having the one biological child, and maybe adopting later on. But their daughter was beautiful, skin and hair just like her mother, but with her father's bright blue eyes, Lily had her mother's bubbly personality, but still managed to remind everyone of her father with her gentleness with everyone and everything smaller than her, including Flapjacks, who loved it when the baby napped on a blanket on the floor because he could settle next to her for his own nap.
When Lily was three, Ryan and Brooke started talking about adopting, and while they would have been happy with an older child, they were thrilled when it turned out there was a baby boy, just 7 months old, who needed kind and understanding parents. Little Robbie had been abused since he was born, malnourished and yelled at, and was terrified of being held, but when Ryan and Brooke met him, they fell in love with him and knew he was meant to be theirs. It took a while to work out all the details, and they worried that something would stop it from happening, but finally they were able to take Robbie home, both of their hearts breaking when the tiny boy cried because they were holding him.
It only took a few days of living with them, of Ryan gently rubbing Robbie's back when he was scared, of them giving him all the food he needed, or Lily telling him stories half in english and half in baby talk, before Robbie began to relax. And it was about a month after he came home with them that he took his first steps, pulling himself up from the floor by the corner of the table, beaming at Ryan and taking a few shaky steps before falling down with a thump. He sniffled for a moment, then looked up at Ryan and held his arms up the way Lily did when she wanted to be picked up. Ryan had only hesitated a moment, then sat down and gently pulled Robbie into his lap, smiling at Brooke in amazement when the boy sighed and shifted closer before falling asleep.
By the time Robbie was 18 months old, he liked to be picked up and held as often as possible, and didn't like when his mommy and daddy had to leave him to go to work. They were a happy family, normal, settled, and talking about adopting again once Robbie was a little older.
Then came the day that Ryan walked out of the building he was working on, talking to Kirsten on his cell about the progress, and spotted the boy sitting on the low stone wall. The boy looked up, and when their eyes met Ryan felt a jolt of recognition. The boy had the same scared and lonely eyes Ryan used to see in the mirror when he was a teenager. Until, that is, the Cohens reached out to him. He took a deep breath to steady his nerves before speaking. "Hey kid, you need help?"
"Are you Ryan Atwood?" the boy replied.
"Yeah, do I know you?"
"You did when I was a baby," the boy said, taking a deep breath of his own. "My name's Daniel Diaz. I'm your son."
That hadn't been what Ryan expected to hear.
To Be Continued...
Ta-Da! lol...I've wanted to write Ryan/Brooke forever, and I figure I'm somewhat easing into it this way, because she could grow and change in the eleven or so years between now and when this fic takes place... lol... If I can find her future voice, I can feel more comfortable writing her in her present voice... if that makes sense... lol
