24 Gifts Of 2017 - Gift #6 - Escaping (Controlling Cohens 'Verse)
A long time ago, I wrote a fic I called Controlling Cohens, where the Cohens were an abusive level of controlling, and Ryan basically disappeared to try and escape them, winding up going to college on the east coast and meeting Professor Rodney McKay (Stargate: Atlantis), who had left the Stargate Program, and took a liking to Ryan. This is a continuation.
Zoe Carter (Eureka) is also featured in this as Ryan's closest friend at college, and the bane of McKay's existence.
"I need an assistant for a top secret project," McKay announced after everyone but Ryan and Zoe had left the classroom.
"Ryan can have it, I'd probably poison your coffee with citrus after a full day of working with you," Zoe said.
"You would, wouldn't you?" McKay agreed. "And I chose him anyway. I kept you after because if he hesitates you'll talk sense into him."
"I'm standing right here," Ryan protested.
"I've already spoken with the Dean of Students and your other professors, and considering the basics of the project, they'll consider it a semester of practical experience and they're willing to let you take your finals over the internet, since we would have to leave the day after tomorrow and be gone for almost six months. Braxton has had a few other students who worked top secret projects, and they're used to providing alternatives. Your professors can provide you with a digital packet of most of the material you'll miss in class, and when we return you can test out of the 101 classes to continue without losing any credit hours, and depending on your test score even adding addition credits hours."
"You've thought this through."
"The best part is there is no possible way for those people to get anywhere near you for the six months we're gone," McKay said bluntly. "I refuse to let anyone cause harm, of any sort, to a mind with as much potential as yours. And maybe six months of being stonewalled by a university that has been told in no uncertain terms they will with blacklisted by most western governments if they tell those people anything, will get them to back off."
"You're scary, I'll give you that," Zoe said. "But you really think they'll believe you can make 'most western governments' blacklist Braxton?"
"If you think that little town you live in is top secret? You don't know anything about top secret," McKay countered. "Global Dynamics has nothing on the SGC."
"SGC?" Zoe asked.
"Ask Henry Deacon, he's the only one in your town with clearance to know half of what the SGC is about," McKay said. "The point is, I can and will make sure this school never gets any government research grants ever again if they give any information to those people."
"Dr. McKay..."
"Did I mention it's a paid position?" McKay barrelled on. "All food and housing provided, and it'll give you a foot in the door for one of the most amazing job locations anyone could ever hope for. And yes, if they'd agreed to fund me for two, I would have brought you, too," he added to Zoe.
"Ryan, it'll get you six months guaranteed without the Cohens harshing your Zen, I say you should go."
"Harshing my Zen?" Ryan asked, rolling his eyes, then he looked back at McKay. "This job... is it gonna be anything like the craziness of your 'thought experiments' that involve terrorists attacks during hurricanes?"
"Well, I don't think that exact situation will come up again..." McKay said. "And even if it did, I'm sure you'd handle it."
"I'm insane for agreeing to this," Ryan said. "But... six months free of them? I think I'd literally live on the edge of an active volcano to get that. Hell, I'd do that for a week."
"So you're in?" McKay said.
"Yeah, I'm in. Only problem might be..."
"What?"
"I'm on an anti-anxiety med. Mostly because of the Cohens. I only have about 20 pills left, going off them cold turkey is a very bad idea, and if this place we're going has terrorist attacks on occasion... I don't think I'm gonna be stress and anxiety free."
"That's not gonna disqualify him, is it?" Zoe asked, furrowing her brow. "If so, I can have a friend hack into a pharmacy database and get him a six month supply, no one has to know."
"Zoe!" Ryan protested.
"What's the drug? A lot of us used them during the first year of the expedition, when we had even less contact with... civilization. It was expected that there'd be anxiety. And once we knew how... uncertain life there was sometimes, they kept us supplied. So there should be some there already. We usually had Ativan."
"That's what I'm on," Ryan agreed, relieved.
"Then there's no problem, you can go and get away for a couple months," Zoe said firmly. "I'll spread the rumor that you killed McKay and after hiding the body you went into hiding just in case his alleged military friends came after you," she added with a grin.
"I really wish they had given me funding for for both of you, because you would do well there," McKay told her with a smirk. "Ronan would love you."
"Well, you'll just have to convince them to give you more funding next time, won't you?" Zoe said.

The moment he and McKay reached Cheyenne Mountain, Ryan was put to work checking the equipment McKay had requisitioned to make sure it was in perfect condition and worked for what he needed it for. After the third time he had to call McKay to confirm that yes, the muscular 20 year-old in his office was indeed his assistant even if he looked more like one of the Marines, Ryan grabbed a sheet of paper and hastily wrote a note.
No, I'm not in the wrong place.
No, I'm not a Marine.
I'm Dr. McKay's assistant.
Yes, I know what I'm doing.
Leave me alone so I can do my job.
Or at least give me your name so
I can tell McKay WHY I'm behind
And he can deal with you.
The interruptions stopped after that.
The End
I'm thinking there might be more of this at some point, with Ryan being a badass genuis on Atlantis... lol
