PART NINETEEN

Late that night, Ryan was stretched out in one of the large beds, trying to get comfortable, when there was a knock on the door and Caleb walked in. "Most people wait for a 'come in'," Ryan muttered as he pushed himself upright again and flipped on a lamp, grateful to have electricity again.
"Kiki says you took charge of things in Newport," Caleb said.
"Who else could?" Ryan replied. "Kirsten and Jimmy were the only adults left after the 2nd day I was back, and when have they ever had to be scared for their safety? What did they know about survival? Someone had to take charge, and I did because... because I didn't want anyone else to die."
"She also, along with Summer and that... Alex girl, say that your ideas and rules are what kept them all alive long enough to get here. And that you made it clear that you wouldn't leave anyone behind unless they were a threat to everyone else's safety."
"What's your point, Mr. Nichols, because in case you haven't heard, I suffered major bloodloss 10 days ago, and then I almost got choked to death by a Crazy today. I'm kinda tired."
"I can run a business. I can run my family. I don't know how to run a war, and that's what we're in the middle of," Caleb said, though clearly the admission pained him.
"Okay..."
"They said you came up with the plans, so... so what do you suggest we do? To get supplies. To make everyone safer."
"At the moment? I think everyone in my group needs a good night's rest more than anything. The Crazies aren't going to come until they run out of food, and there's still animals running around in town," Ryan said. "In the morning, I'll think, I'll figure out plans. Right now..."
"Right now you need to leave him the hell alone and let him sleep!" Summer said from the doorway, hands on her hips and eyes flashing in anger. "Did you miss the part about him almost dying this afternoon? Or him having been shot 10 days ago? How about the fact that he hasn't had a good night's sleep that wasn't blood loss induced in over a month? Get the hell out!"
Caleb humphed, but left the room. "We'll talk in the morning," he told Ryan before Summer closed the door in his face.
"What is wrong with that man?" Summer asked as she came over and sat down on the edge of the bed to check Ryan's forehead for signs of a fever. "Emily said that we need to watch for infection, it could still set in, especially after your fight with the Crazy earlier."
"You know how you can keep a real close eye on my temperature?" Ryan asked.
"How?" Summer replied.
"Stay with me tonight," Ryan said, wrapping his good arm around Summer's waist to pull her into a kiss. "I happen to know you have really good bedside manner."
"Chino..."
"It's been way too long," Ryan whispered in her ear. "And the bed is nice and soft..."
"I don't want you to hurt yourself..." Summer said, even though she ducked her head to kiss him again.
"Just be slow and careful," Ryan said, sliding his good hand under her shirt. "Please..." he asked, a hint of pleading in his voice.
Summer pulled out of the kiss long enough to peel her t-shirt off over her head, then gently pulled his wifebeater up and off, cautious of his bad shoulder. She moved to the cut-off scrub pants, untying the waist and tugging them and his boxers down his hips, again being careful of his injuries. Once Ryan was stripped, she climbed off the bed long enough to take off her jeans and underwear, then climbed back over him, her legs on either side of his hips, and kissed him deeply as she felt his good hand on the small of her back, stroking the bare skin.

"Hey," Luke said as he find Alex standing at the second floor windows that overlooked the road. "Keeping watch?"
"They have a piss poor excuse for safety measures," Alex said. "No one was on watch."
"They said that since the initial round, they haven't had any encounters with Crazies up here, so I guess they figured they don't need to," Luke said, leaning against the wall behind her, his body not quite touching hers. "Once Chino's gotten some sleep he'll probably work out a schedule. I overheard Summer kicking Mr. Nichols out for trying to talk safety plans with Ryan tonight."
"Good, if anyone deserves sleep, it's Ry," Alex said, leaning back slightly so that her back was against Luke's chest. "This shit is way too fucking much, Luke. And I swear, if any of them question Ryan's leadership, I'll kick their asses."
"I think you'd have to get in line behind Summer and Kirsten," Luke said, wrapping an arm around Alex's waist. "And I'd be on the front lines, too."
"He's right, you know. We can't let ourselves think we're safe, because we may not be," Alex said. "I mean, there's no fucking way all those Crazies were residents in town. They're migrating and god knows how or why since they don't seem rational enough to drive anymore, and shouldn't they be starving to death by now? Especially if they walked all that way from wherever?"
"None of this makes sense," Luke replied. "Maybe whatever it is that messed them up in the head also slowed their metabolism or something..."
"You're smarter than you act," Alex said, turning to looking up at him with a smirk on her face. "I like smart labrador puppies."
"Would you stop with the damn dog comparisons?" Luke said, laughing.
"When you stop acting like one," Alex countered, turning to look out the window again. "I swear, Luke, when Ryan says you've done good I expect to see a tail wagging."
"Knock it off," Luke said, kissing her shoulder. "Or I'll find some way to make fun of you."
"The fact that I'm seriously thinking of sleeping with you is enough material to last a lifetime," Alex said.
"Remind me to ask Chino to make sure there's several available nights where neither you or me have watch duty," Luke said, waggling an eyebrow.
"Now you're an eager little puppy!" Alex said, laughing as Luke tickled her side. "Stop it!"

Trey shook his head as he walked up the main stairs and spied Luke and Alex's antics. He never thought he'd fit in with any group, never been accepted in life by anyone but Ryan, but first Lindsay had given him a chance and now all of Ryan's group was the same. He had a purpose, he had a job, and it felt good. What felt better was seeing Lindsay standing on the rear balcony, looking up at the stars. He walked out the wide open glass doors and leaned against the railing beside her.
"Anything interesting happening up there?" he asked.
"I saw a shooting star," Lindsay said. "Made a wish."
"What was it?"
"One that won't come true," Lindsay said, looking over at Trey, then down towards the lake. "I wished none of this had happened. That I was in my room, at home, studying, and my mom was doing some work in the living room..."
"I can't entirely wish it had never happened," Trey said. "If I did... it means I wouldn't be seeing Ryan again for another year or so, and that's if I got time off for good behavior. And Ry would be in Chino, playing daddy to Theresa's kid. And I never would have met you."
Lindsay smiled and edged closer to Trey, her hand moving to cover his on the railing. "I can't regret meeting you, either. Although I seriously wish we had met up with Ryan and his group much earlier."
Trey nodded in agreement. "Volchak threatened to rape you and let Donnie and Z do the same," he blurted out. "That's why I told you to get out and I went to the hospital to do what he wanted. I didn't want them touching you."
"And you described Ryan as having a hero complex," Lindsay said.
"Where do you think he got it from?" Trey asked. They lapsed into a comfortable silence for a moment before he spoke again. "So, uh, I saw you with the little kiddies earlier."
"They were so scared..."
"Kinda freaked me out a little," Trey continued. "I mean... are you like playing mommy now?"
"I don't know," Lindsay said. "My life plan involved Standford or some other amazing ivy league school. And now that's not going to happen and I'm kinda lost as to what to do with myself."
"You're good at fixing things, jerry-rigging mechanical shit," Trey said. "You can do that. We need that kinda thing. You don't have to just play mommy because you're a teenage girl with no official education in shit."
"You're so poetic," Lindsay teased, laughing slightly.
Trey chuckled and lightly shoved her shoulder with his. "You know, before everything went down, I'd totally be called a perv for wanting to be around you so much. I'm 20, you're 16..."
"The old rules are gone," Lindsay said. "I mean, 30 and 16 would be a problem, but..."
Trey chuckled. "That mean... does that mean you wanna be around me, too?" he asked, a little hesitant.
"All the time," Lindsay admitted.
Trey smiled and leaned in to kiss her. "Good." He pulled back again and looked out at the lake and the cabins that were just barely visible through the dark night air. "Life could be good here."
Lindsay looked over at Trey and nodded. "Yeah, it could."

"I'd say all is good in the world," Emily told Caleb as she turned the stew pot upside down on the stove to dry. "You've got both your kids here, and one of your grandkids... unless you're going to deny that he's your grandson," she added after a moment.
"I think Kiki would hang me from the rafters if I did," Caleb replied with a chuckle.
"He seems like a good kid," Emily said, turning and leaning against the counter. "They all do."
Caleb nodded. "I fully intend to ask him what he thinks we should do to make it safer here."
"Enclose the porch," Emily said immediately. "That way, during the winter, we can stack wood out there and have it out of the way but still be able to get it without really going outside."
"Let's save that talk for tomorrow," Caleb said. "I'm an old man, and I'm tired."
"You're not that old, and you're stubborn as hell so I think you may outlive us all," Emily said with a smile as she walked past him, lightly smacking him in the chest with a dishtowel.
Caleb smiled as he watched her go, then quickly hid it was Kirsten walked in, looking series. "Is everything alright?" he asked, concerned.
"Only a few people know, but you should be one of them," Kirsten replied. "I intend to tell Emily tomorrow."
"What is it? Is something wrong?" Caleb asked, a note of panic in his voice.
"No, Dad, nothing's wrong," Kirsten said. "I just... I found out right before Sandy got sick. Actually he was sniffling when I told him. I'm pregnant."
"You're...?" Caleb began, seemingly torn between being excited about another grandchild, and being terrified. "This could be dangerous, Kiki... there's no proper medical care..."
"Women have been giving birth without proper medical care for millenia, Dad," Kirsten said. "And I'm better off tonight than I was last night, when it would have been a 16 year-old candystriper delivering the baby in 6 months."
Caleb nodded and stepped forward to pull his daughter into a hug. "It'll all be alright," he said, smoothing her hair.
Kirsten returned the hug, almsot clinging to her father. "Ryan knows what he's talking about, Dad, just listen to him," she whispered.
"I'll try."
"He's already made it clear to me that this is his little brother or sister, and he's not going to let anything happen to me or it."
"Well, then he and I have something in common, because I won't let anything happy to you," Caleb said. "And I won't let anything happen to either of my surviving grandchildren either."
Kirsten smiled and held him just a little tighter. "Thank you," she said softly.
"You are not to tell the boy I said that," Caleb insisted gruffly as he pulled back.
"Your secret's safe with me," Kirsten said.
"Go to bed, Kiki, your children need you well rested."

I may do a 'montage' chapter (Like how in the 'Dawn of The Dead' remake from 2004 they had the cover of 'Down With The Sickness' montage of everyone settling into life in the mall... lol) that shows them getting ready to handle the coming winter and making themselves safe from attacks... and of course preparing for the birth of Kirsten's baby...

That was a great post !!!!!!!!!!!!

I love how Caleb is now one of Ryan's underlings. And also how he is protective of Kirsten's baby. I really like your version of the characters more than the actual characters.
a Ryan/Summer moment. AAAAAH... So Sweet.

Is it Chrismukkah already?
Liked the Lindsey/Trey, Alex/Luke encounters as well.

I like how you picked up from the tension in the previous chapter and had an entitled Caleb adopting his controlling posture even when seeking Ryan out. Talk about not being able to readily teach an OLD dog new tricks. Caleb has one dynamic and his irrational dislike and jealousy of Ryan comes shining through, even when Caleb is beginning to be aware of all Ryan has done for his daughter and grandson.
I'm still not sure which moment has had the most resonance with Caleb. Is it that Ryan made sure Seth didn't die afraid and alone? Is it that he's devoted himself to protecting Kirsten and her unborn child so that life can continue and there's something to celebrate too- something personal for Caleb? Is it that Caleb wouldn't have the oppoortunity to be with Kirsten and his unborn grandchild if Ryan hadn't risked his own life so many times and dedicated himself to caring for her and the others who have also supported her? By showing so much trust and demonstrating so much responsibility, does he earn the least bit of trust, respect and grudging acknowledgement in return? I do have to wonder, jaded person that I am, if Caleb is really seeing Ryan for who he is in light of such dire circumstances so that real priorities take precedence and selfish feelings are of little consequence, or if it's to appease and placate Kirsten. Hopefully, it's the former. The very fact that he's admitted weakness and uncertainty to Ryan is shocking in itself. That means he's conceding to Ryan's better judgement- at least in these matters. When zombies and crazies roam the planet!
Easy there, Summer, our boy is healing. Be careful.
You've hinted at the dynamics in the various pairings here so we're getting more couplings too.
Emily, don't fall for Caleb, please! I'm happy that we've got the best nurse in California- or in fanfic- on our side. Is she getting double pay now? I hope her personality is similar to the one we've come to know already. I'm wondering if she made an appearance in the third, but earlier story now... (Yeah, I'm still trying to get there!)
You've given us another great couple of chapters that have clarified and furthered relationships and allowed for some actual character growth and changes in perspective too.

I'd say it's a little of each... on one hand he'll be 'nicer' for Kirsten's sake, but there is an acknowledgement that Ryan is a useful person to have around and knows what he's doing... It WOULD take the Apocalypse for Caleb to accept that Ryan is more than some deliquent punk, huh? lol
Hey, they spent at least 2 weeks without sex (it's been 10 days since Ryan was shot, plus at least 3 days of travel before that, and then add at least another 2 days when they were still at the house...) so they're kinda eager... lol... but she WAS trying to go slow and gentle! lol
I'm obsessed with the Luke/Alex and Trey/Lindsay pairings before they're so... weird... lol... but they could be so damn good... lol
Emily/Caleb would be kinda freaky, but... lol... people behave oddly during crisis situations... She deserves triple play for having to deal with the end of the world in this one... lol... She's basically the same... some differences since, you know, she's not working in a cushy rich-person's mental hospital, but overall I intend for her to be the same... lol... and yeah, she did appear in another fic already 'Heavy Things', which is one of the 100Situations fics but not part of 'Runaway'... lol...

Luke and Alex. They always crack me up on one way or the other.
Awww, Lindsay and Trey's conversation was just to die for! And they kissed! You have no idea how much I love you right now. This chapter was full of loving to our couples. And I noticed you using the whole 'Trey seeing Lindsay with kids' thing on the conversation. I know he secretly loved seeing her like that even thought his comment hinted about freaking out or something.
Caleb admitting Ryan knows more about something than him must've been hard for him. I mean, he's this big shot corporate guy and he's a sixteen-year-old "delinquent" from Chino. But I love him because he was a man enough to admit that. And, because he called Ryan his grandson aloud. Even thought told everyone who heard him not to tell Ryan.
Loved the chapter, off to read others. I have some serious catching up to do.

Luke and Alex are fun to write... I'm tempted to have her turn up in 'Heavily Broken' to pair with Luke... Either Alex or Taylor (I think Luke/Taylor could be funny too... lol... and different...)
I know! lol... I'm writing it and *I* got all hyper about them kissing! lol And yeah, he liked seeing it (If for no other reason than he knows he wouldn't see her treat her/their kids like Dawn treated him and Ryan)... but he was also freaked a little because the guy has no good rolemodels for fathers, so he can't help being scared that he'd be a bad one...
*Very* hard to admit... lol... but he admitted it because at this point it's the lives of both his daughters (all three if you count Lindsay, though I know I haven't yet made any mention of Caleb knowing she's his daughter... lol) plus at the end of the chapter his grandchild, too, so he'll do what it takes to protect them... and calling Ryan his grandson... I couldn't resist that line... lol... but the man would never want Ryan to know he said that... which means Ryan HAS to find out sooner or later... lol
