24 Gifts Of 2017 - Gift #10 - So Much For His Best Behavior (LBYH)

So this takes place the day before the Ryan and Summer conversation about Connor from this year's first gift. This is what went down at the party where Connor was Ryan's date.

"It's my birthday, Sandy has to be on his best behavior or all the women in my life will murder him," Ryan said as he and Connor arrived outside the Cohen house in Connor's SUV.

"But how scared should I be over the women in your life?" Connor countered.

Ryan laughed. "So the big bad murdering lawyer is scared, of a few women?" he teased.

"I've met Summer, Alex, and Lucy. The first two threatened to castrate me, the last one said she'd stab me with a fork," Connor countered.

"I guess Summer's been babysitting a lot lately..."

"And there's a mom and... what? A stepsister, and a foster sister..."

"Stepmom, too," Ryan said. "Julie's surprisingly protective..."

"Yeah, so... I think my fear is valid."

"You are such a wuss," Ryan said as he got out of the SUV.

"No, a value my life," Connor corrected.

When they walked into the house, Kirsten was excited to meet Connor, greeting him warmly and double checking to be sure he didn't have any food allergies that would mean avoiding any of the food.

"Ryan mentioned you're in Sandy's class?" Kirsten asked.

"Yeah, I just need my credits from that, and I will officially be a lawyer," Connor said.

"Any job offers yet?" Kirsten asked.

"A few, but... most of them are back east, I'm hoping to stay at least on the west coast."

"Why, don't want to deal with your past?" Sandy asked as he walked over, his expression tense.

"Sandy..." Ryan began.

"Ryan, I told you, he's a criminal..."

"So am I," Ryan countered.

"A few juvenile charges, in a now expunged record are nothing compared to his involvement in murders. His law professor's husband was a murderer, who was then murdered himself... One of his classmates was murdered... Another almsot died in the same fire that killed the other one..."

"You don't know what happened to Wes and Laurel, so don't talk about them," Connor said, tense. "I get that you don't like me, Mr. Cohen, but I transferred because I didn't want to be a part of that... mess... in Philadelphia. I wanted to have a quieter life."

"I don't want my son involved with someone like you."

"Why? Because of Professor Keating? Or because I'm a guy?" Connor snapped.

"Enough, both of you," Kirsten said. "This is not the time!"

"Daddy?"

Ryan turned and saw Lucy standing by the back door, looking confused. "Lucy..."

"Why are grandpa and Connor fighting?"

Ryan took a deep breath. "It's okay, baby, just go back outside and help Aunt Julie with Jake and Soph, okay? I'll be right out." He waited for her to leave, then turned to the others. "Don't ever yell at me where she can hear it again, or it will be the last time you watch her," he said coldly before turning to Connor. "Can you... I'm sorry, but can you just... go. I'll call you later, but I..."

"Sure," Connor said, though he was clearly not happy about it. "Happy birthday," he added before turning to leave. He got as far as the porch before Summer caught up with him.

"Wait a sec," she said. "Don't... don't be mad at Ryan. For a guy that used to get in a lot of fist fights, he really does not like confrontation, and he and Sandy have been clashing about a lot of things for years. What you said about it maybe being because you're a guy? That strikes a nerve and opens up an old wound, and Ryan just... sometimes when he's hurting he shuts down. So just... don't give up on him, give him at least a day or two so he can reason this out and realize that he doesn't want to lose you, because I know he will realize that."

Connor nodded. "I'm pissed, but not at Ryan," he assured her. "At Professor Cohen for being an ass, and at myself for apparently opening up that old wound..."

Summer chewed on her lip. "Never tell Ryan I told you this, but... years ago, when we were still in high school, Sandy found out about Ryan being Bi. His reaction... he claims he didn't mean it how it sounded, but he told Ryan that they had a right to know who they were bringing into their home with their son. Ryan was... that was his worst fear about coming out, that the Cohens would think he did or would do something to Seth. It took two more years before they really fixed their relationship, and you calling Sandy out like that... it reminded Ryan of how Sandy reacted back when he'd been outed." She sighed. "I don't know if Sandy's homophobic, or if he's just Anti-You because of whatever this 'Professor Keating' thing is. But I know Ryan likes you."

"I like him, too."

"So just give him a little time to work out how he feels, and I know he'll call you in a day or two."

"Okay."

The End

First of all, yes, Jake Atwood still exists in this verse, because Julie divorced Frank's ass the first time he hit her, but she would never keep Ryan from his baby brother. Soph and Jake are best friends, and even though they're both three years younger than Lucy (she was born in fall 2004, they were born in the spring and fall of 2007, respectively), she's an awesome niece and plays with both of them... lol... they grow up as friends... lol

Second, yes, before talking to Ryan and convincing him to call Connor, Summer talked to Connor himself, to make sure that Ryan wouldn't get his heart broken if he reached out. If Connor had been an ass about the situation, Summer would have told Ryan NOT to call him.

Thirdly, the only reason Ryan asked Connor to leave is because he didn't want Lucy to see more fighting, but there were people from out of town (Julie and Jake, Kaitlin had flown in from her college back east) that he hadn't seen for a while and didn't want to lose the rare visiting time.

Fourthly... I'm leaving out the fight Sandy tried to start over the fact that Lucy already knew Connor. Kirsten put a stop to that right away because she knew that Sandy questioning Ryan's parenting decisions again would be a nail in the coffin and Ryan would get Lucy and leave, even if it meant not visiting with the out of town guests.
