24 Gifts Of 2010 - Day Ten - Paris (Ryan & Summer Friendship)

Ryan begins to regret moving to France after graduation so he could be with Taylor. Crappy apartment, limited contact with family, no friends... thank god for Summer and the internet.

Paris

"I never should have come here," Ryan said as he sat staring out the window towards the filthy building across the alley. "I don't know anyone, I barely speak enough French to get to the store and home, Taylor is never at the apartment... which I'm pretty sure has rats in the walls and I hate rats... I shouldn't have come, Summer."

"Miserable, huh?" Summer replied, her voice sounding tinny over the crackling phone line.

"Did I mention that I get really sucky cell phone reception and the internet is intermittent at best in the apartment? Something about the old stone walls," Ryan added. "And if I want to talk to anyone I know, one of us has to be up in the middle of the night."

"I can survive the occasional late night," Summer insisted. "I bet the museums and the architecture are awesome," she added, trying to stay positive.

"Yeah, they are," Ryan replied, sighing. "But... I just... I came here so that Taylor and I could be together. I put everything on hold to be with her, and... she's barely even here. She can't even make time to have dinner with me most of the time. I mean, I get it, she's starting her career, but... so was I. And she begged me to come to Paris, she said she wanted to... to start a life, to get married... I've been here three months, and we've had dinner once."

"Maybe you need to come home, Atwood," Summer suggested. "You know Sandy and Kirsten would love for you to stay with them, and Sophie Rose would be over the moon."

"This was a stupid idea," Ryan said. "I'm starting to hate her..."

"Then come home."

Ryan sighed, leaning back in his chair and noticing that for once the internet was on. "Hang on, you have your computer?"

"Yeah," Summer said. "I was doing some research for a protest in a few days."

"Webcam?" Ryan asked. "I could use a friendly face to go with the voice."

"You gotta it," Summer agreed.

A moment later, the screen opened up, and Ryan couldn't contain a laugh. "What did you do to your hair?" he asked.

"You don't like?" Summer asked, taking off her headband and shaking the multiple thick braids free. "Che keeps calling and telling me how awesome I'd look with dreads, but I think I'm gonna stick with braids. Easy to keep untangled, but still easy to undo."

"Good, because the only white person who looks good in dreads is... well... no one."

Summer laughed. "I miss you, Atwood."

"I miss you, too, Roberts," Ryan said. "I think... I think I'm gonna come home."

"Good."

"Can you... can you stay on while I pack? Keep me from chickening out?"

"You've got it," Summer promised. "Wanna hear about the next protest?"

"Sure," Ryan agreed, getting up and pointing the laptop towards the dresser and bed so they could still talk as he packed.

Aw, this is SO adorable!
I always enjoy some Ryan-hating-Taylor storyline and Ryan/Summer are wonderful together, even if they're just friends.
