Crazy Life

"He's hot."

Julie followed her daughter's gaze to see the guy who was walking out of the pool house beside Ryan and had to agree. He was definitely hot. "No trying to steal Ryan's boyfriend," Julie told Kaitlin.

Kaitlin rolled her eyes. "Please, I've got enough gay guys to deal with because of the Twins," she said.

"I don't wanna know," Ryan said, having come in just in time to hear her comment.

"Probably not," Kaitlin said as she gave him a hug. "Good to see you, almost brother," she said.

"You, too, Kaitlin," Ryan agreed. "Kaitlin, Julie, this is my boyfriend, Jess Mariano. Jess, these two ladies are Julie and Kaitlin Cooper."

"Hey," Jess said in greeting.

"Sit, have a bagel or cereal," Sandy said, gesturing at the food.

"See, I told you. This family believes in feeding strays who wander in," Ryan joked as he and Jess sat down at the counter.

Jess chuckled and accepted the smeared bagel Ryan passed him. "Yeah, yeah," he said, rolling his eyes.

"How did you guys meet?" Kaitlin asked.

"We've got a couple classes together," Ryan said. "We discovered we shared a distinct confusion when it came to Philosophy, and the rest is history."

"Sure," Kaitlin said, skeptically.

"What, you don't believe us?" Ryan asked, pretending to be offended. "I'm hurt, Kaitlin..."

"Oh my God, wait! Is Ryan Atwood actually joking and having a sense of humor?!" Kaitlin mocked him.

"I'm funny!" Ryan protested.

"Yeah, sure you are," Kaitlin said.

"I am!"

"Not really," Jess said, patting Ryan on the shoulder. "But it's okay, we forgive you."

Kaitlin snickered. "Oh my God, I like you," she told Jess, who snorted.

"I'm likeable," he said.

This time it was Ryan's turn to burst out laughing. "Yeah, just ask the guy you superglued in his room!" he said. "Jess waited until the guy was drunk, then opened the dorm room door, put superglue all over the latch and lock, then closed it and, while he waited for it to dry, went and made popcorn so he could snack and enjoy the show!"

"Yeah, well, he treated Brooke like crap. And you wanted to duct tape him to the light pole," Jess pointed out.

"Duct tape him naked to the light pole," Ryan corrected with a grin. "Yours was far more creative, I'll give you that."

"Especially since he'd had like a gallon of beer and the bathrooms were down the hall," Jess said with a smirk.

"You are evil," Kaitlin said. "If you and Ryan ever break up, I will be available."

"Gee, thanks," Ryan said, rolling his eyes.

"What? I said if you ever break up, I'm not gonna steal him or anything," Kaitlin said.

"Kaitlin, stop picking on Ryan," Julie said.

"Thank you," Ryan said. "I'm glad someone is willing to stand up for me," he added, elbowing Jess in the side.

"Hey, I thought you liked my honesty," Jess protested.

"Seriously, though," Kaitlin said, leaning towards Jess. "Hurt him, I will hunt you down and hurt you."

"What is it with your family threatening me? First The Nana threatens to hunt me down, now the munchkin..."

"Munchkin?!" Kaitlin protested.

"Would you prefer Lilipution?" Jess asked seriously.

Ryan laughed at the outraged look on Kaitlin's face. "Serves you right," he said.

"I don't like you anymore," Kaitlin told Jess.

"Good," Jess replied. "I'm not the guy people like, I'm the guy people accuse of stealing lawn gnomes."

"Why would you still a lawn gnome?" Kaitlin asked.

"For the hell of it?" Jess replied. "I returned it unharmed. Didn't even ask for ransom or anything."

"You're a saint," Ryan said wryly, though he was smiling.

"And don't you forget it," Jess replied.

"So, how's the sex?" Kaitlin asked, not caring as everyone stared at her.

"Kaitlin!" Julie said again.

"Please, like Sandy and Kirsten thought they were sharing the pool house platonically?" Kaitlin said. "No one's that stupid."

"Still a highly inappropriate question," Ryan said.

"Ooh, college boy is using big words," Kaitlin teased.

"I take it back," Ryan said.

"Take what back?"

"I'm not your brother," Ryan said, though the corner of his mouth was twitching upwards. "Now will you just stop?"

"Nope," Kaitlin said. "Because I am still your sister."

"Damn," Ryan said.

"Jess!" Sophie Rose said as she ran into the room and latched onto his leg.

"Hey, what about me?" Ryan asked.

"Hi, Ry!" Sophie Rose said, looking up at him with adoring eyes and a wide smile.

"What's up, shorty?" Jess asked.

"Can you tell me another story?" Sophie Rose asked, batting her eyelashes.

"Tonight, alright?" Jess promised.

"I wanna know more about how the Rabbit Army defeated the evil Swans," Sophie Rose said, nodding seriously.

"I'll tell you about the battle at the bridge, okay?" Jess said. "It's really good."

"Okay!" Sophie Rose replied, smiling widely.

"Rabbit Army and Evil Swans?" Kaitlin asked.

"True story, Rabbits are good, Swans are evil," Jess insisted. "I got pecked in the eye by one when I was 17."

"A Swan attacked you?" Julie asked.

"It was evil!" Jess insisted.

"A Swan?" Kaitlin repeated.

"It was evil," Jess said again. "Even my Uncle Luke agreed after he met the thing."

"Swans are evil," Sophie Rose said, nodding from where she still clung to Jess' leg.

"See, the kid knows it," Jess said.

Ryan just smiled and patted Jess on the back. "Whatever you say, Jess," he said.

~~~
"You're good for him."
Jess glanced up from his laptop, surprised to find Julie sinking into a seat across the patio table from him. "I am?"
"You are," Julie confirmed. "I don't think any of us ever saw him smile the way he has been today."
"That's not me," Jess said. "That's because he missed you guys, and he's glad to be home."
"You may be fooling yourself, but I've known him since he was this scared 15 year-old who genuinely believed he was unlovable," Julie said.
"How could he think that?" Jess asked, genuinely confused.
"Because just about everyone he loved treated him like he was nothing. Like he could be replaced easily," Julie said. "He was always scared to do things that could disrupt his relationship with Sandy and Kirsten, he thought they'd get mad and leave him like his mother did. Then he met you, and... when he called and told them about you, that the mysterious someone he was dating was a guy, he told them point blank that it didn't matter what they thought, he was going to think of himself first for once, and that meant being with you, even if they didn't want anything to do with him because of it. He told them he wouldn't be miserable to make someone else happy anymore."
"If anyone deserves to be happy..." Jess began.
"We know," Julie said. "But he doesn't always believe he deserves it."
"My Uncle thinks I was joking when I told him I'm dating a guy," Jess admitted. "He laughed and said it was a good one, Lorelei would love it.... she's his girlfriend. Sometimes. He's the only person who's opinion matters to me. Everyone else can go to hell, but if Uncle Luke tells me he's disgusted... that would hurt. But not enough to give up Ryan."
"Good, because he deserves to be loved by someone who doesn't see him as disposable."
"Not even remotely temporary or casual," Jess said.
"What?"
"When he introduced me to The Nana, there was some... drama... with her not liking me. And after we resolved it, I told him that I didn't see what we had as even remotely temporary or casual. I wanted it to last. It's our thing, instead of the... 'L' word... we say that."
"As long as he knows, you're good with us," Julie said. "But I'll reiterate my daughter's threat."
"Hurt him and get hunted down," Jess said. "Got it."
"Good to know we understand each other," Julie said with a smile.
~~~

"You're family is crazy," Jess said as he stretched out beside Ryan on the bed in the pool house while they waited for dinner.

"Tell me something I didn't know," Ryan replied with a smile. "What happened?"

"I had this conversation with Julie about how apparently I'm good for you, better than your exes were, and again with the threatening to hurt me if I hurt you thing..."

"It's a common theme," Ryan admitted. "But I can..."

"Nah, it's good to know that someone else loves you that much."

Ryan rolled onto his side and pulled Jess into a kiss. "And you claim to be a jerk," he said.

"I'm an ass," Jess argued before kissing Ryan again and sliding a hand under the back of his boyfriend's shirt. "A totally and complete ass."

"I'm not gonna say it," Ryan replied with a grin.

"Better not," Jess growled, kissing Ryan again.

The End

Swans ARE evil and it's canon that on Gilmore Girls Jess got pecked in the eye by a swan and was left with a black eye. And it happened the day he was suppose to meet his girlfriend's uptight grandparents... and said girlfriend was a bitch and assumed he got in a fight with her jerk ex-boyfriend, Dean (played by a pre-Supernatural Jared Padalecki), and wouldn't give him the benefit of the doubt. Yes, I have serious issues with Rory Gilmore and her behavior towards Jess... lol

Again, very sweet. I love it, if everyone is so protective of Ryan.

I do like these two. I'd just never imagined them together. But this is really sweet. Great to see people standing up for Ryan and showing they care.

While I, on the other hand, have a problem with how Rory always treated Dean....
