Missing Persons

Newport Beach General Hospital
3 days later, Ryan was sitting up in his hospital bed, trying to pretend the hospital food didn't suck, when the door opened and she walked in, blue cast on her wrist and a bandage on her forehead covering the stitches she'd needed. "Hey," Ryan said, pushing the rolling cart aside in hopes that Brooke would sit on the edge of the bed instead of in the chair.
"Hey," Brooke echoed, climbing up beside him and reaching out to take his hand, wanting the tangible proof that they were both there and alive. "So my parents agreed that I can go back to Tree Hill and they will never make me return to California," she said.
"Not all Californians are kidnapping, organ stealing psychos," Ryan pointed out.
"No," Brooke agreed. "Some of them are cute guys who play hero and save me. And who I'm really gonna miss."
"When do you leave?"
"I've got a half hour before I have to leave for the airport," she replied. "I know I am never setting foot in California again, but.... if you're ever in North Carolina, I'd love to see you."
"Maybe we can write? E-mail?" Ryan suggested, trying not to sound hopeful. "I... I don't think anyone else could understand any of this."
"I'd really like that," Brooke said, nodding and putting an envelope on the bedside table. "My address, e-mail, and phone number," she said. "Do one of the three and give me your info then."
"I'm gonna be in here for a while yet," Ryan reminded her. "The infection really knocked me for a loop. SO... maybe I'll ask Seth's girlfriend, Summer, to e-mail you with an update. Let you know how I'm doing until I get out."
"Sounds good," Brooke agreed. "I actually met her yesterday."
"Yeah?"
"She's kinda scary, but in the good way. She was pissed that the gift shop had little chocolate basketballs and footballs, but no soccer balls. And all the flower arrangements and balloons were way to frilly and girly for the male recovering kidnapping victim."
Ryan laughed slightly. "Sounds like Summer."
"It gets worse, when she saw me, she told me that she's going to get me a custom t-shirt made that says 'My parents moved to Newport and all I got was kidnapped and chained to a wall' and send it to me."
Ryan laughed harder, then put a hand to his side as it tugged on his redone stitches. "Don't make me laugh," he said.
"Sorry," Brooke said. "But anyway, Summer already gave me her e-mail, so I could make sure you were telling me the truth about how you're doing"
"So, now you've got something to write about in the application essays," Ryan pointed out, guiding the subject away from him.
"How I spent spring break chained to a wall and scared for my life?" Brooke asked. "And then met a totally hot guy who's kidney got carved out of him and he picked the lock and we escaped?"
"I'm hot?"
"Totally hot," Brooke corrected. "Summer also gave me a picture of you not looking all beat up so I can show people how hot. You are totally going on my hot guy wall."
"Wow, I'm honored."
"You should be," Brooke said.
"Maybe I'll come visit you after I graduate," Ryan said. "I'm actually thinking I may defer a year. I don't know if I'm ready to not live near the Cohens."
"Can you handle being across the country from them?" Brooke asked.
"If you're there, then yeah," Ryan said, nodding.
Brooke smiled and tucked her hair behind her ear. "Well, next time you see me, I'm gonna be cast free and the stitches will have dissolved, hopefully without a scar, and I will look totally hot. So be prepared."
Ryan smiled and squeezed her hand as the door opened again and JJ stepped inside. "Hi, Agent Jareau," he said, having met her while answering questions about what had happened inside the old clinic.
"Hi, Ryan," JJ replied. "I hate to do this, but Brooke, we need to go so we can leave on time."
"Did I forget to mention that the FBI is flying me home free of charge?" Brooke said. "With all the press and my stupid anxiety attacks, they figured I wouldn't do well on a crowded commercial flight."
"Probably right," Ryan agreed. "Take care, Brooke. And... can you e-mail Summer? Let her know you got home safe so she can pass it along?"
"Sure," Brooke agreed, getting up and bending to kiss his cheek, right at the corner of his mouth. "Bye, Ryan."
"Bye," Ryan echoed, squeezing her hand on more time before releasing it.

Brooke,
I know Summer's been keeping you updated, but I wanted to e-mail you as soon as I got home. It's two in the afternoon here, about ten in the morning for you, so I guess it'll be a couple hours before you get this.
I'm not living in the poolhouse anymore, Sandy and Kirsten decided that they wanted me inside, protected by the alarm system, so now I have the room next to Seth's. It's a nice room, and after the whole fire escape thing, my fear of heights has basically disappeared, so I can deal with the view from the windows.
I feel okay. Not great, but okay. My back still hurts a little, and it'll probably scar, but Summer's dad offered to fix it for free if I want. I probably won't, it's just one of many scars, but it was still nice of him to offer.
The hardest part is that no one else here can understand it. I keep having nightmares, worse than ever before, and I know the Cohens and Summer are all freaking out about it. They have me seeing a shrink to help me 'deal with the trauma', but I don't want to talk to them or some stranger about this, they can't understand what it was like to be in that room.
My birthday was last week, as you know (Thanks for the DVDs, though I think Kirsten no longer likes you so much after Seth told her exactly what the Saw movies are about... lol), and I actually heard from Trey. Yeah, my jack ass brother who tried to choke me to death less than a year ago called me. Apparently, he saw what happened on the news and got in touch with Sandy to find out if I was really okay, and then Sandy arranged for him to call my hospital room to talk to me. It was good to hear his voice, and he promised me that he's clean and staying out of trouble, even if he does have the warrant out for his arrest.
I should go, Kirsten just came in with lunch of chicken broth and toast, yum, and she's giving me a look about not resting enough. It doesn't help that I asked if we could watch Saw tonight...
Bye,
Ryan

My hero!
I'm so glad that your home and safe inside the house instead of off alone in a glass room with doors that don't lock tight and secure. Don't worry about the nightmares, I'm having them, too. Mine tend to be about us dying in that room and never being found. I'm not seeing a shrink, but my friends here have figured out not to ask questions but to let me talk if I start. Nathan's been great, hanging out with me and running interference whenever someone gets pushy about anything. Lucas is jealous about all the attention Nate's been giving me, which makes me want to hit him since the idiot did dump me for Peyton.
Haley came back to town when she found out how bad I was doing mentally, and she's been staying over a lot since she and Nate are on the outs over the whole rockstar thing, even though they're talking some. At least my trauma is bringing them back together. Anyway, she's been there for a lot of my nightmares, and just holds me while I cry and tells me it's okay and both you and me are safe now.
I'm glad you like the DVDs, even if Kirsten doesn't appreciate it. Call me morbid, but... better the guy from The Princess Bride and the other dude than us, right? I swear, I figured out ways to beat the traps in all the movies, ways that don't involve serious harm to the person beating them. I've had way too much time on my hands. I'm glad you heard from your brother and that it went well. Sounds like a good birthday present from him, huh? How's it feel to be 18, anyway? I've got a year to go, remember, and I can't wait to get there.
Is missing school gonna mess up your graduating? And what about college, have you decided about deferring or not yet? And regardless, have you decided about coming to visit? I'd love to see you sometime when we weren't both all beaten up.
Love you Hero,
Brooke

I checked, your school lets out two days before Harbor Graduation. I know you swore off California, and no one blames you for it, but the last couple weeks have been rough on Ryan. First the kidnapping, then Johnny dying like that and Marissa being a bitch, his mom starting to drink again, and the god damn press hounding him so much... It would mean so much to him if you came.
You could stay at my house, we've got plenty of room, even with Marissa and her sister both living here now that their mom is marrying my dad. And I'd love to see you take Marissa down a couple of pegs. It's sad that I consider a girl I met for maybe an hour total and who lives on the other side of the country to be a better friend than someone I've known my whole life, but... I like you so much more. Ryan smiles when he hears your name, and he doesn't smile much the rest of the time.
Don't feel obligated to come, I'm not telling Ryan about asking, so if you don't he won't be hurt, and I'll completely understand if you don't. But I know he'd love to see you, and like I said, I'd love to see you knock Marissa off her high horse.
Let me know, okay? And after next week, my e-mail will be Summery@CaliMail.com.

I owe Ryan, and honestly I'd love to see him, too. I knew him 5 days in person, but it seems weird to be without him.
As for that Marissa bitch? I can't wait to have a little talk with her skinny ass. Ryan deserves a hell of a lot better than her and I will hurt her if she says the wrong thing to me. I've been taking some great self defense classes, and I'm getting really good at kick boxing.
I'll let you know my flight info as soon as I have the ticket.

Newport Beach Airport ~ A Week Later
Brooke spotted Summer as soon as she got off the plane, and accepted the welcoming hug easily, glad that her cast had come off last week so that she didn't smack the other girl in the head with it. "Does he know yet?"
"Nope," Summer said. "It's cutting it close, but we have just enough time to drive back to my house, both of us shower and get dressed, and have my dad drive us to Harbor. You'll be sitting between him and the Cohens, so right where he'll see you. And there's no chance of any Coopers spoiling it because they are already at Harbor."
"Let's go," Brooke agreed, though she kept a tight grip on Summer's sleeve to ground herself to the fact that she wasn't alone. After a moment, she felt Summer shift and then they were clasping hands.
"Don't worry, everything's good," Summer assured her.
The Harbor School ~ Graduation
Dr. Neil Roberts led Brooke through the crowd to the seats reserved, and smiled when his fiancee spotted him, smiling then frowning when she saw Brooke, who had changed into a pretty sun dress and light jacket.
"Look who came to see Ryan," Neil said as Brooke took a seat between he and Kirsten.
"It's good to see you," Kirsten said, giving Brooke a hug.
"Thanks, Mrs. Cohen," Brooke replied, smiling. "I just hope Ryan'll be happy to see me."
"I'm sure he will be," Sandy said, reaching around Kirsten to clasp Brooke's hand in a friendly way. "How are you doing?"
"Better all the time," Brooke said. "Not back to my old self, exactly, but... better." They had to fall quiet then, as the graduating seniors took their seats in stands and the ceremony began. Brooke caught Summer's gaze, and saw the other girl poke Ryan's shoulder and tilt her head towards the audience. Brooke smiled as she locked eyes with Ryan and he went from serious and nervous to smiling in an instant. And suddenly all her doubts about California disappeared. She'd come back all the time if that's what it took to see Ryan.
The ceremony seemed to drag on, but as soon as it was over, Ryan made straight for Brooke and pulled her into a hug. "What are you doing here?" he asked.
"I wanted to see you," Brooke replied. "See my hero graduate. And it's all Summer's doing, she asked me if I'd consider coming, and said I could stay with her, picked me up from the airport..."
"That's why you were late," Ryan said to Summer as she came over.
"You smiled, it was worth the trouble," Summer replied, giving him a hug.
"Of course, this means that baring like finals or something, you have to come to Tree Hill next year when I graduate," Brooke said to Ryan, her fingers threading through his. "It's a requirement."
"Deal," Ryan agreed. "And I already deferred for a year, so nothing will get in the way of me being there."
"Good," Brooke said, smiling. "But I will kick you ass if you don't go next year."
"I have to reapply anyway, so at least I'll have a really good essay to go with it," Ryan said.
"Hey! My college essay is about the kidnapping, no stealing!" Brooke teased.
"It was my suggestion in the first place!" Ryan protested, putting an arm around Brooke's shoulders. "But fine, I'll make mine about two and a half weeks in the hospital because my kidney was stolen from me."
"Much better," Brooke said before she and Ryan both started laughing.
"You're completely insane," Seth said.
"I live with my jerk ex-boyfriend's mom," Brooke pointed out. "Two of my best friends are a married couple. My other best friend lost a kidney while we were kidnapped together. Of course I'm insane."
"I think you know my excuse," Ryan added, though he was still smiling, his gaze going to Brooke constantly. It felt good to see her when they hadn't just gotten out of a life or death situation and neither looked bloody and half dead. "How long are you in town?" he asked her.
"A few days," Brooke replied. "I'm crashing at Summer's because she rocks like that and her dad showed me their excellent security system."
"Always a plus," Ryan agreed, nodding.
"If you decide you'd like to stay with us, we do have another guest room," Kirsten said. "And a good alarm system."
"So you've forgiven me for the DVDs?" Brooke asked.
"Ryan enjoyed them, so... who are we to judge," Sandy said with a smile.
"They were morbid!" Marissa whined.
"You wouldn't understand," Brooke said. "You've never been chained to a wall." She kept her voice upbeat even as her eyes were shooting daggers.
"We're all going out to dinner, why don't you ride with us, Brooke?" Sandy suggested. "I'd like to here more about you and your home town, since Ryan's mentioned visiting you."
"It's unbelievably boring," Brooke said. "The big thing in Tree Hill is basketball..."
The Restaurant ~ Later
"Hey," Ryan said as he sat down next to Brooke at the bar, where she was sipping an ice water. "I know you're probably bored..."
"Actually, the little sister of your scrawny little bitch ex has been keeping me company," Brooke said. "She thinks I'm great for cussing out an FBI agent who was keeping me from going back for you that day. And apparently Summer showed her some of e-mails expressing my opinion about her sister, and Kaitlin called me her hero."
Ryan tried not to laugh as he reached out to take Brooke's hand. "Thanks for coming. I know it's gotta be... hard..."
"I got to see you, that made it worth it."
Ryan smiled again. "So... listen, I was thinking. Like I said, I'm gonna defer college for a year, but I want to try being more on my own. So I was thinking of... of moving to Tree Hill. It gets me away from the Cohens enough to give me a chance to get used to it, but I'm not all alone, I'll know you," he said. "If that sounds weird or creepy, I understand..."
"It sounds great," Brooke said, squeezing his hand. "Nate and Hales have been asking if they're gonna get to meet you someday, apparently I take about you a lot."
"Well, I think everyone here is sick of hearing about you all the time, as hard as that is to believe..."
"Suck up," Brooke said, laughing.
Ryan laughed with her, then impulsively leaned in and kissed her, pressing his lips to hers and smiling as he felt her arms come to wrap around his neck and shoulders.

The End
Quickest written multi-part story I've ever done... each of the 3 chapters is like 20kb... so it's fairly long...

I have a suggestion why not continue this OTH/OC crossover with Ryan living in Tree Hill during his gap year.
Going to catch up on my Criminal Minds now!!!!!!

I was actually thinking of doing that... It could be fun to write, and it would be a MUCH longer fic than this one, and I do so love writing long complicated fics... lol

On to your story: I'm positively surprised because writing a TV-style story on CM has to be hard, considering their often long winded talks about victimology. Ryan and Brooke being captured in a single cell was a stroke of genius - one, I haven't seen any of that on CM before and two, what better bonding time than to escape a common adversary?
I do think that the idea of Ryan moving to Tree Hill is a bit out of the blue, then again I also think you kept some of his motivations from us on that topic ;) There's no surprise here that I'd enjoy a sequel too, my foremost question is Ryan's motivation to move.
no subject
I tried to balance between capturing the psycho-babble profiling and making it easier for non-CM fans to read... lol... it helped that I have this GREAT reference book called 'Maliscious Intent: A Writer's Guide To How Murderers, Robbers, Rapists, And Other Criminals Think'... it's in the 'The Howdunit Series', I've got 3 books from it and they are SOOO helpful (The other two I have are 'Police Procedural' and 'Amateur Detectives') and they are totally rock... lol...
Ryan's motivations for it will be better explained in the sequel, but I swear, in my mind it totally makes sense... lol...

These books sound interesting and I'm sure they're terribly helpful with writing and getting into characters' heads.
And yes, you're right about the Prentiss "being urged to do something" part. But I so love the Hotch and would probably quit watching altogether if they get rid of him! :(
no subject
They really are totally helpful... Maliscious Intent even has a chapter on victim thought processes during and after the trauma...
I know, I totally love Hotch, too... for me it's Reid, Morgan, and JJ that I'd stop watching if they were gone, though... they scared the hell out of me with the situation with Reid earlier this season, the eps that James Van Der Beek guest starred in (I don't wanna say more because I don't wanna spoil it... lol)...

I've never heard about Higher Ground. What's that show (or movie) about?
no subject
Higher Ground is a Canadian television show, aired in 2000, whose main theme is a treatment of adolescents at a reform camp in the mountains and woods of Pacific Northwest.
The show lasted only one season and deals with issues like drug, sexual and verbal abuse, self-mutilation, eating disorder, neglect, and suicidal attempts.
Among the kids were Scott (Drug abuse after beign sexually abused by his young stepmother), Shelby (Ran away from home after being sexually and physically absued by7 ehr father, wound up prostituting herself), Juliette (Bulimic and self mutilation), Ezra (Drugs, suicidal), and Daisy (She was emotionally abused and when ti threatened to turn physical, she attacked her dad with a golf club)...
The main teacher, Peter, was a former drug addict who got clean and took the job at the school to help kid spull up from their own rock bottoms, they way he had to as an adult...
The WikiPage I linked to above gives better info on the show... but I can see how I could work The OC characters into it (Ryan for his criminal activities, Marissa for drugs/eating disorder, Seth for Drugs...) or make it another crossover with OTH (Nathan had some problems with taking some drugs and drinking... in the first two seasons...) it could be good...

Anyhoo. Read it. Loved it. Want more. I had just hoped that you would use Gideon more but alas.
In many ways, this is like a little back story to your other Ryan/Brooke fic... I'm not sure about details, I'll have to reread it but it can explain how Ryan and Brooke got together. You just have to fill in the rest of the gaps now. Yes, that was me hinting for a sequal/prequal!
Also, I love your idea of OC meets Higher Ground. I so see Ryan as Scott, Brooke as Shelby and who are we kidding, Marissa is so Julliette! I was genuinely upset when this show got cancelled because it was so good and was, of course, the first time I saw Hayden Christensen.

Scott Barringer: You're like a stalker or something.
Shelby Merrick: I only stalk the very best.
[Juliette has been caught self-injuring]
Juliette Waybourne: It makes the pain inside me go away. So that I don't have to think about it. It lets it leak out, where everyone else can see it.
(SETH IS SO EZRA!)
Ezra Friedkin: I made a film for Junior High Social Studies. It was called Smoke Gets in My Eyes, celebrated my youth lost to the drug culture.
Daisy Lipenowski: Mine was called The Upside of Death. I thought it was a comedy.
Shelby Merrick: You would.
Juliette Waybourne: Don't you ever wish that sometimes you could just... float?
Ezra Friedkin: With or without the use of pharmaceutical aids?

Ryan - Scott (Julie is totally his evil child-molesting stepmother... lol)
Brooke - Shelby (It's not a big leap from ignoring your child to abusing them...)
Marissa - Juliette (Although poor Jules deserves better... lol)
Seth - Ezra (He does have the right kinda personality...)
Peyton - Daisy (Although I dislike Peyton and LOVED Daisy... but the dark and dreary personality... lol)
Lucas - Auggie (Not a 'bad' kid, just one who makes stupid decisions and gets in trouble...)
Haley - Kat (The kid who's ready to graduate the program, like the 'mom' of the kids...)
I could always create characters for the OTH and The OC charatcers who aren't on the above list... lol... Nathan and Rachel from OTH, Luke, Summer, and Alex from The OC all pop into my mind...
And then, depending on where my mind goes, Sandy and Kirsten could be put in the roles of Peter and Sophie, the teachers at the school who genuinely care about the kids and wind up falling in love with eachother... lol...

I should really not be this into your Ryan/Brooke pairing because it feels like I am cheating on my OTP of Ryan/Summer but, darn it, I just can't help myself!
I like Peyton. She's a bit whiny and weak but come on, you'll be too if both your mom's died, you had a stalker who tried to kill you, you had a drug habit and an absentee father. I am neutral about Nathan, he's so "nobody understands my life" but really Nate, it's not all that bad!
no subject
LOL! Well, the way I see it, Ryan/Brooke is just my OTCP (One True Crossover Pairing)... I can love them without it diminishing my love for Ryan/Summer...
My problem with Peyton is that she's kinda hippocritical... her and Nathan were BROKEN UP when Brooke and Nate slept together, and yet she can't see how it was worse when she and Lucas hooked up while Lucas was STILL DATING Brooke... and she's choosing LUCAS over JAKE? Is she an idiot? lol... I used to like her, and I still have moments when I tolerate her, but overall... I have no love for her... and Nathan... he's grown up so much since the show began, and I love him for that...
no subject
lol... you might be happy to know that, while not connected to this universe or directly to the 'Family' universe (Although one of them could totally be backstory for 'Family' if you change one little detail... lol) I started a serious of Ryan/Brooke One-Shots, just little moments in their lives together... including the first time Brooke goes to Cohen Family Movie Night... and her first Chrismukkah... lol
Exactly what I had in mind in terms of the 'casting'... lol... except I do hate to make Marissa into Juliette, because I liked Jules! lol... But it works so well, between the self destrive behavior and the factor that at first Scott and Jules 'dated', then Jules left him for Auggie... lol...
A while back, now all my info is gone thanks to the crash, but I had an idea for a webseries that was HG-ish... except more harsh, since one of the girls was gonna be pregnant and runaway so she could keep her baby... lol...

I loved Kirsten in the first chapter, being fierce and all to Mrs. Davis, and the fact that there was hardly any Sandy in that sort of situation was actually refreshing.
Also, I like Brooke. I don't know her, but I do like yours... and the e-mails were great, knocking Marissa of her high horse would've been nice on the show. Does @calimail.com actually exist, btw?
Question: Are you interested in/ Do you watch Prison Break? Because there could be some great possibilities for a crossover fic with The O.C. (Yes, I'm looking for some of those, but cannot find a good one... Dammit.)
no subject
Yeha, usually Sandy would be in the fore front, but I liked the idea of showing the two totally different moms... the biological one who appears to care but it's only on the surface, and the foster mom who really does care...
Brooke rocks on TV and I LOVE writing her... one of my favorite things about her is that she ISN'T a damsel in distress, she'll fight instead of letting someone else do it for her... and yes, in this fic she calls Ryan her hero, but she jumped in to defend him when the bad guys came in the room the first time, and she didn't want to leave him behind when they made their escape... and as she mentions in her e-mails, she's being proactive and taking self defense classes... Brooke isn't going to let herself be a victim... if you can, go to This Page, then tot he Video Archive, the OTH page, and scroll down to the bottom. Download the clips for '4.16 - You Call It Madness But I Call It Love'... Brooke kicks ass in that ep... lol
As far as I know it does not exist, neither do the other email service things (But I know some high schools do off email addresses to students) but I wanted to make it seem more 'real' by having the full thing instead of just the screenname portion...
No, I don't watch Prison Break (Although I DO think that the actors who play the brothers are both so damn hot... lol)...
no subject
I was already a big fan of Prison Break before The O.C. got cancelled, but now... It's such a shame that the second season is over, now I have to wait so freaking long for Season 3. And to be honest? That last episode was really confusing... I need answers!
Anyway, back to your fic... I read that there was coming a sequel? *grin*
Is there going to be some MidSeason3!Marissa bashing? Is it going to take place in Tree Hill, or at college? Anything would be fine, really. As long as Ryan's there... I'm happy. *hearts your fics*

My only complaint is that I feel like you stiffed me, when it came to the murderer's identity; and the background details. That's one of the reasons,I enjoy watching "Criminal Minds" so darn much!

Yeah, I did skimp on the details about the bad dudes... but hey, it was first attempt at CM fic! lol...
